Hi All

So I'm building my own cables for my GPU's

i have 980 TI's and each one has 2 x 8 pin connectors

First question
At the GPU end of things
Do I have to buy 6+2 connectors or can I just buy 8 pin connectors ?

Seconded Question
When wiring up the connectors from PSU to GPU
Is it just "Pin for Pin" ?
Or is there some crossover going on i should be aware of ?

best regards, Rick

You can use an 8-pin GPU connector instead of a 6+2-pin connector..They are the same thing..Some PSUs only give you an 8-pin instead of a 6+2-pin connector for the GPU.

There may be some crossover, there is no industry-standard pinout at the PSU end of modular cables..The PSU-end pinout would need to come from the PSU manufacturer..Pinout (and color coding) at the component-end (at the GPU) is industry-standard as specified by Intel..Here is the GPU 6-pin/8-pin component-end pinout..To be sure/safe I would turn on the PSU and check the pinout voltages if the wires aren't color-coded.

    Exactly what Bob said.

When I build my own, I scrap the 6+2 connectors and purchase 8 pin.  There is some crossover, so what I usually do is one wire at a time, comparing it against the original to make sure I get the pin out correct.

Yep.  I immediately clip and/or remove all the capacitors and ferrules if there are any.

Since I usually sleeve my wires, I need to.   I've done this on my last three power supplies and have had no issues.
