I recently got a GTX 980TI (and will get at least one more this year I believe), and am considering upgrading my many year old ASUS 21.5" 1080p (TN) monitor. It's currently overclocked to 73Hz, up from the standard 60Hz. I'd ideally like to go 4K at least, I am not really interested in going to a high refresh rate TN panel. I've considered the ultrawide 34" screens, but I'd like a 2160 vertical space.

So here are some I have been looking at going with.

Dell P2415Q
3840x2160, IPS, 60Hz, 16:9
$359 new

Dell P2715Q
3840x2160, IPS, 60Hz, 16:9
$465 new

Dell UP2715K
5120x2880, IPS, 60Hz, 16:9
$1100 new, $725 Amazon Warehouse deal (open box)

LG 31MU97-B
4096x2160, IPS, 60Hz, 17:9
$840 new, $576 Amazon Warehouse deal (open box)

Autodesk recently got DPI scaling support which was a primary thing holding me back from going 4K, my primary usage is gaming, I find 4K60 to be much more interesting than any of the other options like 1440P144. Am I crazy for even considering the 5K and the LG Cinema?

Myself I do not go above 1440P. I found the general use of the Computer was to small for me.
I have a Dell but lock it done to 1440P and 125% on the text and AutoCAD Looks great.
While I still have AutoCAD I have moved over to Visio for simple usage now. I do work anymore so coming from the work force Visio cost is in my bounds.
Anyway if you can go to a Store to see for yourself how it looks, I wish I had done this before I kicked out $1200 for two 4K Dell (P2415Q 24) Screens.

If you game don't go 4k. It's massively expensive to get good framerates.

Get away from 60hz and go higher framerates with gsync and you'll be pondering why you didn't do it earlier and how you'll never be able to go back.

1440p 144/165Hz G-Sync is where its at for price/performance ratio with a good card. You don't have to go TN. They have them in IPS as well. Is IPS worth the premium price over the cheaper TN versions? Nope. But that is subjective to each person and just my opinion.

Do you think TRI SLI 980TI's wouldn't be a good solution for 4K60/5K60? I'm not sure the 980 TI's have enough VRAM to drive 5K to be honest.

To be honest part of the reason I was looking at 4K60/5K60 was because I didn't find the 144Hz screens to be that massive of a difference, at least not (IMO) a more profound difference than the clarity of the 4K/5K resolution. Regardless of resolution/refresh rate I do intend to go IPS or possibly VA, again IMO they just look better. Part of what makes me want the upgrade is my Surface screen looks awesome and my desktop screen not so much sadly.

I would say no especially for a longer-term solution.  Considering that with the pascal series and new drivers NVIDIA aren't really supporting anything above 2-way SLI and leaving that to game devs.  Even on games that DO support 3-way SLI it adds in quite a bit of instability and the laws of diminishing returns come in VERY fast with more than 2 cards.  Even more so when you take into account power and cooling considerations.  https://us.hardware.info/reviews/6292/nvidia-geforce-gtx-980-ti-sli--3-way-sli--4-way-sli-review-ultra-hd-in-ultra-quality

I wanted to update with an answer. I ended up getting an LG 27UD68 (4K, IPS, 10 bit, 60Hz Freesync). I got it for $349 BNIB, a pretty solid deal on a 4K monitor. While Freesync is useless for me, it did overclock with no tweaking up to 74Hz, a nice boost over the stock 60Hz. The colors are great, with it being 10 bit IPS it is a major upgrade over my old 21.5" ASUS TN (which was also a 60Hz panel). So far I've only had time to try a few games on it: Rocket League, Doom (2016), BF4, and Project Cars. With the exception of BF4, everything else that I have tried (though limited) has been beautiful on 4K with ultra settings. BF4 ran at about 30FPS, not exactly ideal.

For productivity it's a massive change, both because of physical real estate and the pixel real estate it has. It gives me room to do quite a bit more on the single screen. I may have to eventually look at getting another to work on. I will saw, the thin bezels are also very nice to have, and it's a very slim monitor with the power supply being an external brick. The stand is a bit wobbly, and I'd like to get a VESA mount for it to fix that, but overall I'm very happy with it.
