So I run dual 980's, I take one out to let my brother try it (he replaced his 970) powered up the computer then said he smells burning so turns off the computer. Now whenever I try to use the card it says " please power down and connect the pcie power cable for this graphics card". It's screwed isn't it? I know the card is still under warranty (has only been about a year since I got it), how do I find out if I can get a replacement?

When I put the card back in my computer I used the same cables that were working for the last year, so the cables aren't the issue. Also, when he powered up the card and it smoked he only put the six pin cable in and not the eight pin. could that have caused it?

Yes, it sounds "screwed". I don't know what your brother did wrong, but it sounds like he damaged the external power input to the card. Whether or not it is covered under warranty depends on what sort of damage was done to the card and if there are any signs of alterations or abuse.

This happened to me with an asus strix card. I could smell it then could never get any PC to recognize it again. I sent it in for RMA. Turned out the air cooler due to sag over about 6 months had come off the Gpu and the gpu fried. I was monitoring temps and never saw them spike but the instant it happened it died in seconds. Took 2 months but they replaced the card. it caused smoke damage to a z97 mvii hero i was using in that system and they refused to replace the board.

+1 Your bro may have put too much stress on the power connectors, do they wiggle at all? His psu could also have been pushing voltage out of tolerance, never trust software when it comes to voltage.

Thee power connectors on thee card seem fine. Strange thing is when he put his 970 back in he got that same message, as though the card wasn't being powered. After transferring everything into another case everything worked fine. Not saying it was the case that fixed it though. My guess is a dodgey connection on the PSU. He's going to buy a new one, is this a good one?
