Heya! Just sitting at my desktop with the side panel off my case both of my cards are sitting at around 50C, ambient temp is around 21C. I haven't messed with the fan profiles yet but I was wondering if this was normal and if I should set a more aggressive fan profile for them. Thanks!

Seems a bit high to me. When I had a single 980 on air it would idle in the 40's with the fan off. The Nvidia coolers should always be on unless that changed with the 10 series. Certain the fan is spinning? If it is, fan curve is the way to go.

Generally speaking, since eVGA allows you to remove/replace the heatsink without voiding the warranty...I usually take it off, replace the TIM and put it back on...Sometimes the TIM is poorly applied and is responsible for the heat being a bit high.. Not to mention you can use better TIM.. You just have to remember, if you use a third party heatsink, to put all the original parts back on, if you RMA the card.

I'm positive the fans are spinning but I'll double check when I get home...any tips on how I should set the curve? transdogmifier Generally speaking, since eVGA allows you to remove/replace the heatsink without voiding the warranty...I usually take it off, replace the TIM and put it back on...Sometimes the TIM is poorly applied and is responsible for the heat being a bit high.. Interesting...I'm not 100% comfortable with taking the card apart but I do still have TIM left from my Noctua cpu cooler so I'll look into this.

What is your refresh rate at on your monitor? On my Asus swift I noticed if I have my desk top at 144hrz my Ideal temps are at 50ish with my 980 Tis Strix and this was the case with the 2 980 Tis SCs that I had. Try dropping it down to 60hrz and see what the idle temp is. What is your refreash

I am actually at 144hz too...i'll see what happens when i drop it down to 60...was testing games yesterday and for about 10min in The Witcher 3 on all ultra settings (hairworks maxed out and everything) at a constant 144fps the main card got up to 87C...I always figured higher fps would generate more a lot more heat...just not this much :D edit: i tested out 60hz on the main monitor and it didn't really make a difference. I have 3 monitors, all 27", 2 are 60hz and 1 is 144hz

I think it’s something to do with the higher refresh rate putting a small load on the GPU for some reason at idle.

It's because you're running multiple monitors. What is the clock speed of your card at idle?

At idle i'm at 1607.0mhz, this is after I adjusted the fan curve a little

Sajin is right. All those monitors are keeping your 1080 from throttling, which would be normal or expected. Those voltages and frequency is the source of the warmer idle. For a fan curve you'll need to play it by ear. When I dabbled with fan curves I used the highest speed that I couldn't hear for my idle. I would then set 2 or 3 other values I could live with for load temperatures and a top emergency value for high or full fan speed if temps got out of control.

Give this a shot to see if it helps fix your problem.

ahh that's helpful, brings core clock down to 607.5mhz and idle temps to around 43C thanks! edit: i left the computer alone for a while and temps are down in the mid to low 30s now...

Wanted to note for anyone who ends up here from searching as I did. This seems to occur if you leave a VR device such as the Oculus Rift plugged in even if you have a single monitor (and the Rift is in standby). Following the above steps lowered my idle temp from 42C to 32C.

Mine runs at constant 30c idle and at 100% usage the maximum I have seen after hours is 77c with the fan speed around 1900-2000 RPM. Ps. Room Temps between 20c-22 . This was taken 3 minutes after playing for 3 hours non stop.
