I just finished my first pc build and was super excited to push the power button....only to be let down. It's been an all day even trying to trouble shoot the issues. I finally got past an error where the Motherboard wasn't recognizing the ram that was pre-oc by running out and buying a new kit of stock 2133 ddr4. Though the system still wouldn't post till after I removed the GPU. I got into the bios, set up the boot, loaded windows 10 then shut down to reinstall the GPU, hoping it would work this time.

NO luck. So far, I have removed and reinstalled it 6 times, swapped the pci power cables around between the 2 8 pin connectors on the GPU, and the 2 connectors on the PSU, even flipping the connectors around between the two ends. NOTHING.

I'm starting to fear that my first build gave me that dreaded dead card.

More detail on the card situation.
Mother board: Asus Maximus viii Hero Alpha
CPU: i7-6700k
RAM: PNY 2133mhz 2x8gb kit (though I hope to figure out how to make my corsair Vengeance 2400mhz kit work)
OS drive: Samsung 500gb 850 evo SSD
Mass Storage: seagate 1tb something or other
CPU cooler: Corsair h110i GT
Case: Corsair air 540
PSU: EVGA NEX750 watt full modular(I forget the exact model)

When the card is connected to the pci-e slot it lights up with or without the power cords connected.
The system will boot when this is the case, though as soon as I connect the power source to the card it no longer boots and just freezes on the MB code of "IDE initialization is started" then goes no further.

any solutions?

Yes, grab the latest BIOS for your motherboard and use the USB BIOS Flashback (suggested) feature to update it and go from there..The instructions are on page 2-13 of your motherboard manual and here is the video.

* Corsair Obsidian 450D Mid-Tower - Airflow Edition * ASUS ROG Maximus X Hero (Wi-Fi AC) * Intel i7-8700K @ 5.0 GHz * 16GB G.SKILL Trident Z 4133MHz * Sabrent Rocket 1TB M.2 SSD * WD Black 500 GB HDD * Seasonic M12 II 750W * Corsair H115i Elite Capellix 280mm * EVGA GTX 760 SC * Win7 Home/Win10 Home *

Are the drives set in the BIOS for AHCI/SATA? or IDE? Hopefully the latest motherboard BIOS will help.

I forgot to mention in the post that I have already updated the bios to the latest version. 1402 bios.

I don't know about the drives being set in the bios to AHCI/SATA or IDE, this is my first build so I'm learning as I go. I will check the bios and see if I can find anything relates to that.

Someone has suggested that the psu could be the culprit because the NEX psu's from EVGA I guess are not the best quality. Though I've found nothing online other than people opinions that suggest it would prevent the system from working.

If I can't find an answer soon i'm going to try and take the gpu to a computer store and see if they can test it for me to make sure it is or isn't the GPU that's the problem.

Try unplugging the 1TB drive and only leave the boot drive installed and see if you get the same error. For the PSU, you can check the +12v reading in the BIOS and see if its fluctuating but that doesn't seem to be the issue. Testing components in already working systems is a good way to check.

I haven't formated the 1tb yet, think that could make a difference? It shows up in the bios listed sata drives. I don't see why that would effect it since it's plugged in on both scenarios. The only factor I've found that prevents it from posting on the display is when the GPU is plugged into the PSU.

I have tried plugging the hdmi into the on board and GPU ports during the process, neither one displays.
though since IDE from what I've seen is how the system accesses the drives I'll go try the  tb drive you mentioned. the SSD boot drive functions when entering windows

Ok, so that didn't work. I checked the bios and the only options for the sata are AHCI is the only options besides Raid.

I unplugged the 1tb, though it didn't affect anything. At this point with my limited knowledge and growing aggravation I am thinking it's the GPU. So I'll just call around to some computer shops and see if someone can test it. If nothing else at least I can eliminate it from the problem. Either way I'm not very happy right now I really don't want to have to wait another 1-3 weeks to get an RMA to get this system up and running.

Are you saying that the onboard/6700k GPU will post and boot to Windows?

Have you tried a different PCIe slot and/or a different PCIe power cable?

Hello,

I would suggest looking into this FAQ http://www.evga.com/support/faq/afmviewfaq.aspx?faqid=59619 that should hopefully fix your issue.

:) ok, so It's my first build....try not to laugh too hard. I took it to bestbuy to have them check the gpu and mobo to see if one was faulty. The A0 code said it was booting into the OS, but with the graphics connected, it wasn't displaying through the motherboards ports anymore. I did not have a dvi cord, though I did have a vga available but didn't try it because there's not a vga port on my computer.

When the tech was behind the desk checking the system it booted on a dvi cable and he went to upload the driver since I told him I didn't have a dvi cable.
It wasn't till he was doing this that I noticed a vga/dvi adaptor in the box....could have saved me a LOT of time if I had noticed that and thought to try it.

It's running now, though I'm still trying to get the software and everything to load. The Drivers from the mobo disc are installed. Though the Optical drive and Hdd/SSD may be having issues. Trying to load disc's in the Optical drive is slow and painful. I'm about to look up a driver for it, Though I'm also having issues with windows recognizing the HDD. The OS is installed on the SSD and it shows up fully functional so that's good. Though I don't want to load too much onto the SSD, saving it for specific programs, and the OS

Is the HDD showing up in the bios?

If so and it's just not showing up in Windows, you may need to initialize it and apply a new simple volume:

You can use diskpart too if you want to do pre windows. Shift f10 at welcome screen on installation media

Thanks! that did the job. I'm wanting to learn these things a lot more. I decided to build a PC so I could try and understand it more inside and out. I have never really used tech for it's full potential due to lack of knowledge so hopefully that changes now.
