Do I even bother with a replacement Classified 980Ti as I'm not using its potential?

So I may or may not get a replacement RMA Classified because my first one had coil whine depending on if newegg has stock or not will depend on refund or replacement.

I have no plans to spend extra money to water cool my setup or my GPU, so i'm wondering should I even bother with getting a second Classified as they are basically only meant for LN2 cooling which I found out AFTER I purchased it and people are having a hard time reaching 1500mhz on air all across the board

If so, i'll just refuse shipment and get my money back and hope I get a decent MSI Gaming instead.

Do you benchmark, or are you the casual gamer, like most people are?

I'm going to take that back, and put it this way... get your money back and stick with 980ti reference cards, and overclock them yourself. and then you're done. no more headaches of having to worry about bad manufacturer overclocks, and not only that, what gain are you getting from getting a higher overclock if your main focus is gaming? we're talking % here, maybe 2-5% gain. If you're into the benchmarking, that's one thing, if not, it's a waste of time.

No, don't care about benchmarks at all, let alone 3dmark epeen rights. I game fairly hardcore so I'm always wanting better framerates, especially now that I have a 1440p LCD and my 980 struggles to maintain 60fps, so I know and have done basic overclocking with pretty good success over the years, but nothing extreme as I dont have the time or patience for it as I work in IT all day and have to fix broken crap for a living, so when I get home, I just want my stuff to freaking work.

on that note, even a reference 980ti (at stock clocks), you're golden.

just throwing this one the side -  I have 2 reference 980s, overclocked a little bit, and I love my cards. Good frames in all directions. And they run fantastic in 3D.
For gaming, Kingpin, Classified, SC, blah blah blah - they're all the same. but you might get a fewer frames better on a classified or Kingpin, but if you're over 100fps anyway, you're not going to see the slightest bit of difference from the human eye, unless your main goal is to max out the FPS because you're that kind of guy... ok, go for it.

Yeah, Stalin is 10000% correct.  a 980ti Ref is your sweet spot.  The Classified is overbuilt specifically for benchmarking.  Buying a benchmarking card and not benchmarking is stroking a different epeen than the 3D mark version, so I would get the money back on go to a reference card. Use the money saved to buy a new game or something.

For not much more then reference, which suck at keeping 980ti's cool enough from throttling, i'd rather spend another $30 and get a better air cooler at least. Just had hopes that my classified would reach higher overclocks easier but apparently maxwell and Classifieds design isn't gonna make that happen on air and I simply don't have the desire or patience to dump money and time into water cooling.

I would stay with the classy.

Overclocked from the factory - 1291MHz boost VS 1076MHz boost, slightly higher fps out the box.
Included back plate - saves you $20 and pre installed
Better quality components - less chance for coil whine vs reference models.
    Looks better

Biggest thing for me is that it's only $50 more then the reference model.

    Just my 2 cents

Lolz, well mine had coil whine outa the box and wouldn't even overclock past 1460, even with power and voltage bars at max. 71% ASIC. So needless to say, my first experience with Classified was not good. Apparently, EVGA still has quality control issues even after these past few years since the 600 series days when I last used em

Sorry to hear that you had issues with your classified, I hope you got it resolved.

OP does not do a lot of overclocking, that is why the factory OC would be a plus for him to get max fps in games without the need for OC'ing the card his self. I never said get the classy because that will give you better OC's over the ref, it only guarantee's a higher factory clock speed over the reference model's.

Better quality components will give him less of a chance to have coil whine, but that does not mean no one will ever have a classy with coil whine. All of the 900 series GPU's will have a chance of having coil whine, no matter what brand we purchase. Some are less likely then others.

Like I said, just stick with reference. Guarantee you won't have the issues. Once you get into the overclocking aspect of things is when you start having issues.
And I hate to say this, but manufacturers get the overclocks wrong just as much as users do, and RMA'ing is not cheap. So the extra "$50" that you spent on the classified just lead you to pay another $50 to have returned item, not to mention what it cost you to have it shipped in the 1st place.

Well, my MSI Gaming just got delievered and it looks like Newegg won't get any classifieds in stock when my bad card so they will just refund my money for my RMA. Too bad, I was hoping EVGA would pull through this time but I guess the Classified just isnt meant for simple gamers that don't do hardcore benching like me.
