Hello, I upgraded my video cards from 2 GTX 780 to 2 GTX 980.   I had the 780s in SLI installed on slot 1 and Slot 2.
I installed the new 980s in slot 1 and slot 2 and my motherboard just cycles the post codes..no boot up.   Then I read the EVGA 980 installation instructions and it says to install in Slot 1 and Slot 3.  I did that and  now it works-I have not tried this in SLI mode yet because I have to get a new bridge because of the length.
Just wondering why are these cards slot specific?  Does not make sense

    The motherboard I am using is DX58SO2 and Slot 1 is PCIe 2.0 x16  Slot 2 is PCIe 2.0 x16 and Slot 3 PCI 2.0 x16 (x8 electrical).
it is the x8 electrical I am curious about and now that I am running in Slot 1 and Slot 3.   The big question is why wont the 980 work in Slot 1 and Slot 2 just like the 780 did ?  Might be time for a new motherboard also?

OK I think there is some power limits on the motherboard.  Once I pulled the Sounblaster card out of one of the PCI slots I am able to now use both video cards in slot 1 and slot 2.  Anyone else have issues with this Intel motherboard and 980 sli? DX58SO2

    Hey,

Since it's a x58 there must be a limit indeed as to what to board/cpu can allocate in terms of lanes. Hard to say it's old stuff but if it works as is, leave it this way.
