Depends on a thousand things. What resolution, are you chasing scores in benchmarks, are you getting low performance, are you just doing it for fun... Too many questions and not enough detail about what you would like to know.

I haven't yet tried to overclock a gpu.I would consider myself a intermediate overclocker for cpu I guess I don't know what those number mean I assume the first is the core clock whats the other the memory?

What are your resolutions? What card do you have.... The 900 series has 3 main cards with close to 100 variants overall.
Overclocking isn't hard. If you are on a 980 using a 1080p monitor, you will already be really high on the for scale with everything at max without overclocking.
If you are on a 60hz monitor, you will be way beyond that, and more fps will do nothing but possibly cause tearing and such.
1440p will be good and could use a little push with an overclock especially on 120/144hz monitors.
Like I said, there a thousand things. Be descriptive about what you have, what you want to accomplish, and what you would like.
Overclocking is ALWAYS fun, so I always suggest it, but is it worth it is a completely different question.

Very nice explanation I have a 960 (signature) I do understand the 960 cant do much with 1440p would overclocking get it a little better im not sure its worth it as I am going to be sli 960 together to do games in 1440 so I see it as not needed and causing ware and tear on my gpu for small gain and few kicks plus voiding the warrenty

It doesn't we void your warranty. Taking a screw driver and removing a capacitor would, as that would be damaging the PCB, but overclocking won't.
The 960 on 1440 would net a few more fps by overclocking. SLI would give you a slightly higher boost as well, but you are adding in heat so you need to focus a little more on airflow to the cards.

I was stupid enough to ask a evga rep if oc'ing voided my warranty.....the response I got was "as long as there is no physical or water damage".

You aren't* stupid for asking. I am going to go "stupid" on mine and get them cold here soon, and they know I overclock. It's why I collect their cards. Like I said, just don't take a hammer or screw driver to the actual PCB, and you will be fine. You can also remove the cooler for cleaning, then put it back on. It doesn't hurt your warranty at all, unless you drop the gpu while cleaning and break a corner off.

you didn't have to agree with me geez....I like that fact that I can mod the bios any way I please and flash it. As long I flash the original rom back to the card for warranty/rma purposes.

I'm so annoyed though. I had to mod the bios to be able to have 1544mhz max boost during benchmarks and gaming. Otherwise it was stuck at 1455 during gaming.

At the end of the pipe line is the monitor! if your monitor is 60Hz/1080 then a card producing 130FPS is not going to be seen as beneficial David
