Good Afternoon Everyone...

Quite new to the forums, as well as computer builds but not to computers. This is my first gaming build in quite a long time as I spend my day building servers for virtualization in data centers. That said, I have a pretty decent understanding of computer hardware as well as software.

That said, here is my issue... (which may be related to others in some ways, but different in others - I will outline my hardware as well as the software below). I have my new computer hooked up to my TV via an HDMI cable on HDMI Input 2. My TV is a Samsung UN55HU8550F that I picked up on Black Friday last year. To my knowledge, according to their documentation, all HDMI ports are HDMI 2.0. My graphics card is the new EVGA GeForce Titan X SC, which also has a HDMI 2.0 port according to the documentation. So far so good, right? The motherboard is a MSI Gaming 7 X99S. Upon powering on, the computer can not get past POST and the debug LCD reads out "97". Windows doesn't even load.

If I hook the same HDMI cable up to my monitor and power cycle, I can complete POST and the computer boots just fine. I can then move the HDMI cable over to the Samsung TV and it works in full 4K glory @ 60Hz. If I restart the computer, I'm hung back at the dreaded "97" read out from the debug LCD and it will continue to sit there indefinitely. I know from reading the forums and searching, this may have something to do with the BIOS looking for a DVI signal but that doesn't explain why it doesn't halt when hooked up to the monitor (which is not 4K). Is the resolution an issue when trying to complete POST?

I've looked all through the Motherboard BIOS and there is no place to define any type of video signal or way to ignore searching for one. There is no on-board video for this Motherboard. The EVGA tech support recommended changing the PCIe Generation from "Auto" to "Generation 3". I will do that when I get home.

I have yet to remove the card and try and re-seed it as it works when hooked up to the non-4K monitor. I also haven't tried moving it to another PCIe slot as I have been told that it really should opperate in PCIe #1 (closest to the processor).

Any help or light you can shed on this would be great.

Motherboard: MSI Gaming 7 X99S - BIOS: H.8 (2/11/2015)
Graphics: EVGA GeForce Titan X SC - Drivers: 347.88
TV: Samsung UN55HU8550F - Firmware: v1081.0

    Welcome to the Forums!
What version of Windows are you using and have you asked MSI this question on what Ports will or will not work?
What is the dreaded "97" mean? Console Output devices connect

I am running Windows 8.1 - 64-bit. I have tried contacting MSI but they were demanding my serial number which I couldn't retrieve until just now as I was at the office and not at home. According to the documentation, "For a single PCIe x16 expansion card installation with optimum performance, using the PCI_E1 slot is recommended." which is exactly where I have it installed.

As far as the documentation states in regards to the debug code, this is all I have to go off of: "For Codes 97,98,99,B2,D5~D7 - Console Output/Input devices/Console initialization and Load Option ROM (VGA, RAID, parallel ports, serial ports……)". I am not running any RAID setup as this only has a single 240GB SSD and a 2TB HDD. There are no parallel ports or serial ports on the motherboard nor do I have any in any other PCIe slots.

Thanks for any help or pointers you have to offer. At this point, I'm beginning to go cross eyed.

It ran out of option rom maybe?  Try to disable motherboard devices you are not using, i.e. extra sata ports, fire wire etc, to free up option rom and see if that helps.  I had issues with one of my raid cards on an older board that required similar actions (ran out of option rom).

Edit: If it is indeed the higher resolution causing this, could you set the tv to a lower resolution to confirm the problem.

Reset your Bios back to the Defaults and while doing this make sure you have know good monitor connect to the Titan X.
Disable your intergraded Video Card and also if you have it Multi Video in your Bios to. Gen 3 in the Bios is a good idea to.
Put your card in the slot next to the CPU or PCI_E1

What amount of Memory do you have installed on your Motherboard?

Once you have the Bios to the defaults or to the Optimized Settings and you are in the Bios.
Plug in each Port on the back of video card (While you are in your BIOS) and see which Ports work and don't work.
Make sure that your TV's Power in ON and test each HDMI Port on the TV as well.
Your TV: Try a cable shorter than 3M to get the next best UHD viewing quality.
HDCP 2.2 is supported only by the TV's HDMI (MHL) port.

I know most Bios cannot be viewed using the HDMI Ports.

Disabling Devices in the Bios would have no effect for the problem you are seeing.

Your TV is a 4K UHD (UHD Upscaling) not a true 4K TV. This may cause you some problems.

    Your E-MANUAL

Read Before Connecting a Computer (Supported Resolutions)
When you connect your TV to a computer, set the computer's video card to one of the standard
resolutions listed in the tables below or on the next page. The TV will automatically adjust to the
resolution you choose. Note that the optimal and recommended resolution is 1920 x1080.
Choosing a resolution not included in the tables can result in a blank screen or just the power indicator
turning on. Refer to the user manual of your graphics card for compatible resolutions.

Doe the BIOS have some option like 'halt on error'?
Even if there is nothing on the screen, maybe just pressing 'Esc', 'F1', 'space' etc on the keyboard will get it to boot

Well all, I believe I may have been able to fix it. I have been able to power up/power down, change cables, everything and the video seems to come back regardless.

Here are the 4 things that I did...

    1. Enable UEFI/Legacy BIOS
    2. Disable SecureBoot
    3. Enabled HDMI UHD Color (4:4:4 at 60Hz for 3840/2160p ) on HDMI Port 2 (Connected to Titan X)
    4. Changed PCI_E1 to "Generation 3" from "Auto"
I'm not sure which one of these may have been the solution. I'm leaning towards option #1 as I have read in other postings about the "dual-BIOS" or UEFI mode that the Titan cards have that tend to not play well with a complete UEFI system. If I remember correctly, it had something to do with the video card not knowing which BIOS to present... something like that. 0's and 1's... above my level of comprehension.

Good luck to anyone else with this issue and thanks to everyone for all of the tips and assistance with this while I figured things out... Now I just need to acquire some games on Steam. Too bad I need to wait for my Witcher 3 game to be released. Wish there would have been some better games to be included with a $1029 card.
