I'm wondering what I should get, my motherboard and CPU are at 5 years old now, and I'm wondering what would be a good upgrade.

The things I'd like would be an ability to run 2 way SLI at least, with room for a sound card+daughter board (the sound blaster ZXR)

aside from that I want things that are already on pretty much every new motherboard, USB 3.0 Sata 3.0, and PCIe 3.0

Things I would like, but aren't required would be the ability to run 2 graphics cards at PCIe 3.0 x16 + a sound card, and RAID support.

Budget is around $800.

I'd scrap the sound card and just get the Asus Maximus VI Formula Z87 and a i7 4770K.

I agree. Don't forget a good cooling solution for that Haswell. Even if you do not plan to OC at all. They will throttle even at stock if you push them.

Are the x79 CPU better than the later z87? assuming I don't spring for a $600 6/12 core/thread CPU and stick to the $300ish CPUs?

I would honestly say 4570k and z87 unless you do any video editing or things that need HT. Then use the extra money you save not getting anything insane like a 4770k and get another card for SLI. Just a thought.

    My Laptop (GE63VR-7RF):
    -7700HQ.
    -16GB RAM.
    -GTX 1070.
    -128GB SSD.
    -1X 1TB 7200 spinny drive.
