I have one monitor connected to the DVI cable.  I am getting a second monitor.  What cable connection on the GTX 780 do I use for the second monitor?

Thanks

Then you would use HDMI since the 780 also has a HDMI connection.

You can use any connection you like with your second monitor though I would avoid the vga as Digital > Analog

I ordered a HDMI cable with the monitor.

I read somewhere on the web that the second monitor will decrease the FPS considerably.  I have the GTX 780 with a Intel 3930 with 15 gb RAM and am playing my game on an SSD drive.  Do you think I will experience that decrease?

Yes, it will make the FPS drop, i am unsure about how much, when adding a second monitor you having to "render" twice as much screen information.

Depends on what your purpose is for the second monitor. If you are planning on gaming across the two monitors then yes, it can have a significant impact on fps depending on your gfx settings.
If you are just using the second monitor for extra workspace and will be gaming only on one monitor, the fps drop will be too insignificant to measure.

I have 4 monitors set up but only use the primary for gaming.

+1.  Gaming on just the primary won't make a difference with another display for monitoring, etc...
