TXAA Anti-Aliasing

For years, Multisample Anti-Aliasing (MSAA) has been the de facto technique for removing jagged edges in games, but with the advancement of other features, such as deferred rendering, MSAA’s performance cost has increased. Furthermore, given its limited sample size, MSAA is incapable of tackling temporal aliasing, observed as shimmering on fine geometry and transparent textures, such as fences and corrugated doors when the camera is motion.
Recently, an alternate form of anti-aliasing called FXAA has become popular. A post-process anti-aliasing technique with minimal performance impact, FXAA is supported in many games, such as Batman: Arkham City and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, and can also be applied to any title via the NVIDIA Control Panel. Detecting edges in a scene and smoothing them out via a post-process pixel shader, this technique has a minimal performance impact, typically in the range of 3-5%, compared to MSAA’s 40% or more. Unfortunately, FXAA also suffers from temporal aliasing, and may not anti-alias all edges in a scene.
With the launch of a recent update for The Secret World, gamers can now leverage TXAA, a new super high-quality anti-aliasing technique introduced alongside the latest Kepler GPUs. Designed specifically to reduce temporal aliasing, TXAA is a combination of hardware anti-aliasing, custom anti-aliasing resolves, and a temporal filter. To filter pixels, TXAA uses a contribution of samples both inside and outside of the pixel in conjunction with samples from prior frames to offer the highest quality filtering possible. In motion, TXAA approaches the quality of other high-end, professional-grade anti-aliasing algorithms, though it should be noted that the higher-quality filtering used by TXAA does result in a softer static image compared to the lower-quality filtering of traditional MSAA.
Using hardware MSAA in conjunction with the aforementioned temporal filter, TXAA provides a substantially higher level of fidelity, especially so in motion, for little extra in the way of performance compared to MSAA. In contrast to methods like FXAA, which attempt to maximize fidelity for a minimal performance cost, TXAA is an ultra-high-end option for gamers looking for the highest possible image quality to make games such as The Secret World look their absolute best.
As TXAA is best shown in motion we’ve created a HD comparison video to exemplify its benefits (click the arrows to view in fullscreen):

To make use of TXAA Anti-Aliasing Secret World players must use the the latest drivers and have a Kepler-based, GeForce GTX 600 Series graphics card in their system.
For further information about TXAA in The Secret World please check out our dedicated article, and for info on future games with TXAA support stay tuned to GeForce.com.

If you were previously struggling for performance jump back in to Creative Assembly’s strategic masterpiece and give the game’s engrossing campaign and multiplayer mode another shot.

NVIDIA Control Panel Game Enhancements

The GeForce 306.23 WHQL drivers include a number of NVIDIA Control Panel enhancements that allow you to further increase in-game fidelity in games like Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Darksiders 2, Diablo III, and MechWarrior Online:

  • Added NVIDIA Control Panel ambient occlusion support to Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.
  • Added NVIDIA Control Panel ambient occlusion support and MSAA Anti-Aliasing support to Darksiders 2.
  • Added NVIDIA Control Panel antialiasing support to Diablo III.
  • Added NVIDIA Control Panel antialiasing support to L.A. Noire.
  • Added NVIDIA Control Panel ambient occlusion support to MechWarrior Online.
  • Added NVIDIA Control Panel antialiasing support to Rayman Origins.
  • Added NVIDIA Control Panel ambient occlusion support to Star Wars: The Old Republic.

Each enhancement is easily applied via the respective game's profile in the "Manage 3D Settings" section of the NVIDIA Control Panel. Simply select the desired values for "Ambient Occlusion", "Antialiasing - Mode", and "Antialiasing - Setting", and click "Apply" before launching the game and basking in the jaggie-free geometry and accurately-shadowed surroundings.

User Experience Enhancements

The reaction to NVIDIA Control Panel FXAA has been fantastic. Gamers are enjoying jaggie-free games without the massive performance impact of MSAA, and are taking advantage of the feature in games that lack anti-aliasing options. However, when users enabled FXAA globally they found that certain applications, like Windows Live Mail, were being anti-aliased also, making text unreadable. To rectify this issue we are now disabling FXAA’s use in the programs identified, but if there are more that need blocking do let us know and we’ll add them to the exclusion list.
On the GeForce GTX 670680 and 690, some users identified an occasional micro-stutter when gaming with VSync or Adaptive VSync enabled. For most this wasn’t noticeable, but we take any issue that detracts from a user’s enjoyment of our products very seriously, and have introduced a fix that will improve the smoothness of VSync gaming.
When using GeForce 3xx drivers and factory-overclocked graphics cards from our partners, some users received poor levels of performance, a result of the graphics card’s clock speed being reduced to idle levels. As with the VSync issue above, this problem is also rectified by the new GeForce 306.23 WHQL drivers.

New & Updated SLI Profiles

As always, our new GeForce driver includes new and updated profiles for today’s top titles, increasing performance and unleashing the full power of SLI systems. Included in today's bumper crop of profiles is full support for Borderlands 2, End of Nations, F1 2012, PlanetSide 2, Torchlight II, and World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria, top titles releasing in the coming days and weeks. Yeah, pretty much the same. My 3DMark11 scores vary from time to time depending on when I run the benchmark. I don't have a 301.42 WHQL result with my Core clock as high as it is now to compare it to. I wish I did.

    Well here it is.....
Lets hope it was worth the wait

HERE are the official release notes
    http://us.download.nvidia.com/Windows/306.23/306.23-win8-win7-winvista-desktop-release-notes.pdf

I urge users who have been having issues or problems with their current Nvidia drivers, to -completely- uninstall Precision/Afterburner (and answer NO when asked to save profile information) before uninstalling their current driver and moving to this newer driver.

Do NOT reinstall Precision or Afterburner, until after this new driver is installed -and- some tests and/or problem games have been run to identify what issues might be monitoring software based.

I wont have the time to really test these until late tonight
    I will report back then

So nice that the Nvidia forums are up so we can discuss this there....oh wait.  Only been 2 months since they went down.

I can't wait to give these a try tonight!

Well I don't know how they're working for the rest of you, but I got a blue screen about 5 minutes into playing BF3 (error code 117). Reinstalled 306.02 and played a couple rounds of conquest large and no crash. These are a no go for me .

WHQL!!?? OMG, can't believe it ... I though it's gonna take them another century to come up with a new WHQL ... will upgrade to this driver once I finish modding my system (Friday evening that is).

Well poop, sorry to hear man.  I am debating on whether or not to install these and try them with surround. Sometimes it stinks to be the guinea pig!

Initial thoughts are this driver is excellent, however more time is needed.

    *Preliminary testing of Nvidia 306.23

No problems or issues to report at this time
My "standard" testing sequence passed every test with flying colors

BF3 GPU SLI usage appears to have increased

At this time, this driver appears to be a improvement over 301.42 and no issues are apparent.
Looks like a keeper to me

*Further testing will be needed to document the performance envelop and weaknesses of this new signed driverset...
But all users experiencing issues with past driversets should try this driver out for a spin

Be interested to know if the BSODs seen with 306.02 have been fixed in this driver.

    Finally a WHQL certified drivers.

While it doesn't say specifically GW2 improvements anyone tested it yet with a GTX680 at 2560x1440? That’s the only game I really play.

Just says “improve game performance by up to 17% on all GeForce 400, 500, and 600 Series GPUs" and they add SLI and 3D profiles for that game.

Was still dropping FPS the longer I played with adaptive V-Sync On. 60-40-40-30. Over a Hour of play. And turning quickly dropped me down to 10-20fps.

    WISH I WAS HOME!!!!

    Re:NVIDIA GeForce 306.23 WHQL Drivers Friday, September 14, 2012 12:00 AM (permalink)
    Hi everyone,

I have been following the advice of maniacvvv in his excellent “Ultimate Nvidia Driver Guide for Uninstalling and Installing driversets” thread since August last year and have successfully upgraded my drivers from the 275.33 to 290.53, 296.10 and more recently 301.42. 301.42 worked perfectly for me.

Yesterday upon upgrading to 306.23 following the very helpful and clear steps, the driver and Nvidia PhysX installed successfully. After a reboot, my Nvidia Control Panel will not open.  Nothing happens when I try to open it and there is no error message. I only installed the driver and Nvidia PhysX (I don’t use any of the other components).

As maniacvvv mentioned in this 306.23 thread, a broken Nvidia Control Panel is a serious problem. Should I simply re-install Windows to correct this issue?

It’s strange; I have had no issues until now. My computer is 1 year old and came with the 275.33 drivers installed. I would usually ask my question on the Nvidia forums but as you know they are still down after a security breach.

I am not looking for in-depth technical advice, I am simply trying to save a bit of time by asking if I should troubleshoot this issue or not? E.g. is it something that can be resolved or is it simpler to just re-install Windows?

I tried downgrading back to the 301.42 drivers but the driver would not install (given an error at the final stage). I have restored my system using a backup image that I created before installing 306.23 yesterday. My PC is again working perfectly with driver 301.42.
My full system specifications are shown below. If you require any further information, please let me know.
Thanks very much in advance for any advice provided.

I know I'll prob get shot down here, but these days using Driver Cleaner and CCcleaner etc is totally unnecessary. I've never had a driver conflict with Nvidia drivers. Uninstall Phys X then the graphics driver via Programs and Features, reboot, clean install new drivers (via the "Custom" menu) and away you go.

Driver Cleaner can do more harm than good in the wrong hands.
