Im currently running a EVGA gtx 680 video card with a 42" vizio television as my monitor. My question is I was looking to either
1. adding 2 more 42" monitors set up as a 3 monitor system
2. upgrade to a 50" plasma television
3. upgrade to a 60" plasma television
Anyone have any input on pro's and con's to any of these setups ?
I mainly use my system for gameing any imput would be helpful thanks Mike

If you have three 42 inch monitors side by side wouldn't you need to be quite far from the monitors to see them all when gaming? Unless of course that is your intention.

Are you using a television to save money or to accommodate your gaming area with a greater viewing distance?

Personally, I would get a computer monitor for PC gaming. I suspect that the pixel pitch on a 42" TV would be close to .50mm. A typical 30" monitor has a pixel pitch of ~.25mm and twice as many pixels (2560x1600 vs. 1920x1080).

Huh! Thanks RJ! That's awesome. Ahhh 2003 what a great year. I think i was reviewing Hidden and Dangerous 2 at GameRevolution.com in Oct 2003.  YUP! That's exactly what I was doing.

Thanks again, RJ! I didn't realize 2000 was a milestone. That makes me wonder how many posts I have on www.evga.com/gaming.

Back on topic: I am curious how far you sit or plan to sit form those massive screens. Also why not a PC monitor. I know they are smaller but he resolution and pixel density is so much higher. I love gaming at 2560x1600. Now if you were to put three 30inch monitors together for 7680x1600 resolution... WOW!

Personally, i dont think a single card has enough horsepower to play games in surround (it works i know, just not at the framerates i would like).

i know you would like to stick with your televisions with the setup but, like other's have said,
    1) TV = poor response time and major input lag
    2) the bigger you go, the crappier it's going to look (pixel density)

but if you must stick with TV (im sure you have your reasons), either go with getting 2 more 42" for surround setup (i guess this would look pretty sick, but with less frame rates because single card with surround)

or for the same framerates you are getting now, go with a NON-plasma for gaming (i still beleive plasmas are GREAT for movies but not games) if you want to upsize your display.

or if it was me, i would go with PC monitors for their much higher pixel density and much faster response. like a single 2560x1440 or higher display.

Personally I think the ultimate 3 monitor setup would be 3x27" 2560x1440 IPS Yamakasi Catleaps, or even the new Overlord 120Hz, though I'm not sure whether you'd be able to power 3 120Hz displays simultaneously.

You can get 3 Catleaps for as little as $975 w/ free shipping.

A single 680 powering 5760x1080 on 3 is not going to fly at all. My 670 over locked to 680 speeds can only produce 40-50 frames at that resolution on my 3 23 inch monitors. I used to game on a 47in LG tv from my couch. I recently transferred to monitors at a desk. My kdr has jumped from 1.3 to getting 2.8 kdrs constantly. The quality of a monitor is absolutely amazing even at 1080p. A 1440p or 1600p monitor would be amazing. 3 42 inch tvs would be hard to manage. You would need like 3 stands for them and run tons of cable to your computer and do conversion. I'm guessing you are going with HDMI and a 680 only has 1 HDMI port. You would need to convert dvi to HDMI and im not sure if you can even do that. 3 tvs would be pretty cool but idk if it's worth the expense. I would either buy monitors and go that route of possible. If you must stick with the tv and must upgrade (not sure what's wrong with 42in) I'd get the 50 inch. Make sure it's 1080p though, 720p looks like complete garbage on a computer.

If you are curious, I think my modsrigs still has pics from when I used a tv.

Yes sir. ^^ Overlord is looking good for those squeamish about purchasing overseas.

Yeah I'm sure one 680 would struggle, that's why I said I'm not sure he'd be able to power it because he didn't really say if he was planning on SLI were he to go triple display.

I was also mentioning the Overlord more for the 120Hz and pixel checking options they have, not domestic vs overseas. I've seen reports from staff on TPU whom bought a Catleap from Seoul and it arrived extremely fast, even to Chicago. Even faster than some domestic shipping.

So I wouldn't worry too much about that. He had more complaints about the stand on the Catleap than the shipping. I'm not sure whether the stand on the Overloads are any better though.

Agreed. Definitely. 120hz surround is worthy of your hard-earned SLI dollars.

you can buy Catleap directly from 120hz.net. Shipping isn't the issue I think some are concerned with. It's warranty and follow up support. That's why I said Overlord may be a more comfortable option for some since they are domestic and offer warranties and support.

I'm hopping the OP is speaking about SLI or else it's sort of a mute discussion based on the monitor setups he's suggesting.

Well thanks for all the information. Ive been using the 42"tv mounted on the wall behind my desk i sit apromx 4' back from tv when i play. I was originally just going to upgrade to a 50" tv . I like the Big effect. but then i was looking on youtube and seen quite a few videos of 3 42" or 46" television setups. According to EVGA a gtx 680 will power 3 42" tv's I thought I would need 2 cards in sli which i would be willing to do. but as you can see from the videos the 3 tv setup is pretty cool but does require about a 9ft desk. LOL I was just throwing around the idea to see what other thought. i would perfer the 3 tv setup but space is going to be a factor.

Regardless of how you go, have a look at the following thread, they list both TVs and monitors with sub-1 frame of input lag. There are also links to other resources to discover more about input lag, testing methodologies, and if needed, more recent reviews.  While not perfect, it's a great resource and should help in your decision.

I still highly recommend getting a actual monitor, you will be amazed at the quality. Tvs just lack on quality up close. If you want lots of space just upgrade to 3 30 inch monitors. I have 3 23in monitors and I think it's huge. With 3 tvs you would also have to deal with huge bezels. Anything with 3 monitors will require another 680.

If you have three 42 inch monitors side by side wouldn't you need to be quite far from the monitors to see them all when gaming? Unless of course that is your intention.

LOL, he needs to be at least 4 or 5 feet away from the front monitor to have a full view on the monitors on each sides. I don't think it's gonna work.

He's also using only a single 680 (probably only 2 Gb) so it's another problem.

Yeah I think 4ft is even close for my triple 23inches.
