I'm willing to bet the plane was possibly shot down with Russian weapons. Those weapons are in the hands of rebels. If the plane has been downed as reported there could be very serious repercussions.

Let's hope it was an accident but a tragic one.

Very few things of this magnitude can be labeled an accident.  One does not accidently let loose a surface to air missile.  They may have misidentified the aircraft as a possible surveillance over flight.  Still you don't accidently shoot things with all the check lists in place.

That also assumes that the proper squawk frequency was transmitted by the aircraft.

I wonder if Patton had the right mentality about Russia 70 years ago or so before WWII ended.

If we have to fight them, now is the time. From now on, we will get weaker and they will get stronger.

Unfortunate Malaysian airlines lost another plane to tragedy and so many lives were lost as a result of this missile launch. Maybe this event can do some good for the situation in Ukraine, or unfortunately be the spark for the powder keg.

I will either find a way, or make one.

    This is eerie:   http://news.yahoo.com/passenger-posted-joke-plane-disappearing-boarded-jet-223807473.html

A young Dutchman apparently posted a picture of the downed Malaysian airliner on Facebook minutes before he boarded it, writing: "If it should disappear, this is what it looks like."

I dont want to jump to conclusions about who is exactly responsible until the facts are known, but this feels like untrained separatists using outdated soviet era weapons.  I too hope that this shines a big spotlight on Russia's arming the separatists and brings some serious pressure down on them to stop.

I'm sorry, but no way some 'terrorists' got their hands on a missile capable of shooting down a jet at 33k feet without help from a bigger player.

Flying over an active war zone is dangerous. North American airlines have been avoiding the area since April. Malaysian airlines wanted the direct route to save costs it seems. All would have been fine except the flight was diverted 300km's away from the usual commercial flight path to avoid a thunderstorm. SA-11 is being suspected as being the missile that was used......who fired is still not known. Although a Russian missile did bring down a Ukrainian military ttansport earlier this week.

    A pointless tragedy.

I read that 7 or 8 prominent AIDS researchers were on the flight going to a Summit, but also had colleagues on the flight and accounted for ~100 of the 300 on it. hmmm, wonder if thats a possible reason?
Thats why we book separate flights and travel separate for most things at work.

He didn't apologize enough for boarding the plane safely.

Yo!! They have a video on LiveLeak of the crash... It shows the bodies and all... I definitely can't link it here, But check it out if you want to...

They also have a new video of in the plane before take off... It's kind of weird seeing this and then watching the other video, Knowing I just saw their dead bodies =/

Gordon Rayner & Martin Evans, The Telegraph
MH17 made its way over Germany, Poland and Ukraine, reaching its cruising altitude of 33,000 feet and flying straight and level, but at 1.21 p.m. radar contact was suddenly lost.
On the ground, Igor Strelkov – also known as Igor Girkin – the leader of the pro-Russian separatists fighting the Ukrainian government forces for control of eastern Ukraine, used his page on the social networking site Vkontakte to boast that his men had just shot down an aircraft.

In a message posted at 2.50 p.m. BST, he wrote: “In the district of Torez an An-26 was just shot down. It crashed somewhere near the Progress mine.
“We warned them not to fly in ‘our skies.’ Here is video confirmation of the latest ‘fallen bird.’ The bird landed outside the residential zone, no peaceful civilians were injured.”

Um, that is a big Ooops,Mr. Girkin.

I think this leaves little doubt as to who did this.  They also used the BUK missile system.  The rebels had boasted that they captured some BUK Missile systems when they overran some Ukrainian positions at the end of June and even posted a Twitter picture.....that was deleted yesterday....go figure.

They would be the DPR (Donetsk People’s Republic).  Basically the Pro-Russian Rebels fighting for independence from Kiev, and are leaning towards alliance with Russia.

Edit: or I guess the DPA (Donetsk People's Army) from the DPR would be more specific.  It isn't like citizens aligning themselves with the DPR should be blamed for some DPA idiots shooting down everything within range.

    What a mess.

This would be the missile system.

They arent just the DPR (Donetsk People's Republic).  They aren't even really freedom fighters.  The 1st thing they asked for when they started their revolt was to join Russia.  Russia hasnt seen how they can get away with it yet.  Crimea was at least a part of Russia historically so they were able to get away with taking Crimea easily.  Eastern Ukraine, the Donetsk region, was only really under Russian control in the USSR days and only becase the Soviet State of Ukraine was a part of the USSR.

    Here are the big points.
For the altitude of the plane, it had to be a weapon system like the Buk pictures above to shoot it down.
Its not a simple task to fire that kind of weapon system.  You need to be trained (usually military trained) to do it.
The Buk is a Russian weapon system.
Less than a week before, the DPR's militia shot down and bragged about shotting down 2 Ukrainian military transports.
There are cellular intercepts from the DPR militia to a Russian spy saying that they shot down a plane in the exact area that MH-17 went down.

Draw your own conclusions, or just turn on the news to hear every talking head blaming the DPR and Russia for supporting and arming the DPR.

They are russian separatists who wants land that never belong to russia. They are paramilitary group on sovereign Ukraine teritory. I hope they will be wipeout as soon as possible

Some idiot 'rebel' had enough training to know how to use the weapon, but not enough in identifying aircraft is my guess. I doubt Putin will be happy about it.
