What is the difference between these two cards? Are you paying the extra $20 just for the factory OC? I doubt they'd actually bin the chips for a $20 difference in price, right? The FTW3s should perform as well as the FTW3 Ultras with a manual OC applied, correct?

    Higher clock by the looks.. 1740MHz vs 1800MHz (3090 that is).   ¯\_(ツ)_/¯   ..with the 3080 it's 1755MHz vs 1800MHz.

The lesser would probably overclock to the same level, but there's no guarantee.

While you might be able to overclock to the same point with the Ultra you are guaranteed 1800MHz while the FTW3 is just 1740MHz. What that means is an Ultra that doesn’t hit 1800MHz could be RMA as defective while with a FTW3 anything above 1740MHz is a non guaranteed overclock that may or may not be stable. So it’s $20 to make sure it at least out of the box is 60MHz faster.

Hopefully that makes sense since it’s one thing to consider.

I literally want the Ultra version just because the name is cool. It makes me think of my GeForce 5700 FX Ultra from BFG that is a bad ass little card, from back in the AGP days. The extra 60MHz is a cool little bonus, though.

    Only difference is clocks.

just clocks and clock testing, not technically 'binning'

To me the value comes in the fact that they're tested to be a notch above the rest. Just pushes the silicon lottery that much more in our favor, which imo is worth the extra few bucks.

Maybe. A Ultra might be capped at 1800 where as the non-ultra might be able to hit 1900. It's all part of the silicon lottery.

Of course you might by the non-ultra and maybe it only goes to 1750 and maybe you buy the ultra and it goes to 1900. Again, there is zero guarantee on clocks other than what is listed on the specs page. Silicon lottery

These cards are not binned as your statement would hint towards.

The ultra is overclocked for the lazy. If you don't have time to overclock, the ultra is for you.

As long as you can always overclock non ultra there doesnt seem much reason to get one. unless you want to be guaranteed those higher clocks
