At my place of employment the old Netopia R9100 router http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleID=1343 is starting to lose connection sometimes. I think this thing was first put out on the market by Netopia around the year 2000. They of course don't make those anymore. Need a newer up to date router that still functions like the old one. Has to be wired. Not wireless. Prefer a flat one so it lays side to side (like the one pictured), not up and down. Any suggestions on a new 8 port ethernet router that my boss can buy for replacement? <---- A pic of what the current one looks like (Netopia 9100r)

I am positive that I have an older bussiness router, 8-port, vpn capable, that was used VERY little and kept VERY well since then in my closet. I bought it for work because I started working from home after I got injured, and I ended up being disabled and losing my job very shortly after, but the 30 days had gone by, so I couldnt return it, so I put it back in the box and its been in the closet ever since. Let me know if you want me to get it out and give you the specs and everything. It was a bussiness router, so it was pretty expensive. I think I paid like $450 on a GREAT deal on it at the time, but it was going for $700-800 when not on that one sale I found it on.

That's a little more than he wants to pay. I'm sure there's cheaper one's out there that will do the same job. ;)

D-Link and TP-Link are 2 pretty good brands to look into. One brand I would highly suggest to stay away from is Linksys. They've been handed off through too many companies that they're a mess of a brand now. In fact I think they were split in half between 2 different companies now.

That is 3 people now recommending them The Ubiquiti stuff is prosumer / enterprise level stuff - outclasses that D-Link stuff I know people like D-Link - myself I don't care for them, at least with the Ubi stuff you will get a real management interface and tools

Linksys used to be good like a decade ago when they used to make the classic blue and grey models. The brand went down hill so far that they went back to that same look to try to draw users back which isn't a good sign.

One con about the Ubiquiti that I read is that it doesn't work well with I.E. That's what my boss uses. Otherwise it get's good reviews.

He needs to step up his game and ditch IE. He (or you) could just install Firefox and just use that for the initial setup and stats reporting

I use an LRT214 as my router (comcast box is set in bridge mode) and DHCP. Ubiquiti switches and APs along with a cloud key for management of the rest of the network Heads up to anyone on Comcast (I guess other ISP's as well) running the newer Arris TG3428g modems/routers - DNS is locked down - cannot change it to a preferred DNS. Found this out trying to setup a PiHole for a friend - had to manually set the DNS on their network clients to use the PiHole

I didnt say I would sell it for that much. And it IS a bussiness/Enterprise router, not a piddly Linksys. And, this is when they were GOOD, not like now being green, and turning things off and on whenever it wants to. But, he can PM me if he wants. Its just sitting in my closet.

Their upgrade paths are affordable too. Their APs are about 130 bucks vs 750-1800 from brands like Ruckus and Pakedge. Switches are very well priced too.

Definitely - their AP's are fantastic for the price. Ubiquiti has a very nice ecosystem all around.
