Hello, my board just died on me and I noticed bad caps.  I want to replace them since my board is no longer under warranty.  I'm not able to find the exact same caps since they are obsolete and no longer in production, but I have found substitutes for two of them.  One of them though, I can't find any info on, no data sheet, nothing.  The Rubycon MFZ 6.3V 2700uf.  Does anyone know what the ESR and Ripple are on this?  If I can get that I can easily find a sub.

Thanks

I don't think anyone here knows. Just buy the best rated 6.3v 2700uf capacitor you can find for a reasonable price. I am sure it will be fine. In a perfect world, you want a perfect capacitor. No capacitor is perfect. Use the best you can. I am sure the motherboard isn't designed to only work with poor capacitors and fail to work with better capacitors.

I'm looking for a better alternative for the Rubycon MFZ 2700uf 6.3v, all those caps blew on my Nforce 680 sli -- any ideas?

Order a reputable Japanese capacitor of same rating from Digikey. It's really quite pointless to ask here. You can help yourself much better.

Capacitor tiered ratings (high to low):

Here are some of the highest rated capacitors on Digikey of similar type which should do the job:
    http://www.digikey.com/product-search/en/capacitors/aluminum-capacitors/131081?FV=340087%2Cfc0021%2Cb54000e%2Cfff40002%2Cfff80009&ColumnSort=-1000011&page=1
^^ the first three in the list look like a winners with high ripple current handling abilities and low impedance.

Rubycon is a good manufacturer and the original capacitors are rated well.  All capacitors will fail.  That is a guarantee.  I wouldn't avoid Rubycon just because yours failed.

Your motherboard has been around for 9 years.  The capacitors on your motherboard were only designed to last a little over a year of power-on-time at max temperature (and the NVIDIA 600 series boards did run very hot!!).  And those were good capacitors compared to some other options out there.  You can find much worse capacitors with lower life expectancy.  Like I said, all capacitors WILL FAIL.  Guarantee.

They've lasted almost 10 years. How much longer do you think that motherboard is going to be useful? How long do you think they should last?

Well, it's a good thing it's been out of use for almost 6 years now -since the 2 rubycon 2700uF capacitors blew. I will get a cooler case setup going to help as well. Probably something nice I can use for my next PC system, and with a really good cooling system --which I haven't looked into yet. Another factor is that the place I moved to has power outages a lot in the summertime so a good UPS will help keep my old 680sli alive as a linux backup for my current comps. I should probably reduce the power supply too, and keep only 2 SSD drives in it --I had 3 7200rpm HD's in it before.

Since I'm repairing my Samsung monitors capacitors that blew around the same time, depending on the heat, I don't expect them to last for more than 4-5 years I suppose? I expect the entire motherboard to last a few more years at least maybe with a few more capacitor replacements if something else doesn't burn out.

Thanks for the links and info ty_ger07, and I was able to find em on eBay so also thanks Zhul3156!

I'm just grateful there are at least some components that can still be replaced. This new SMT makes it near impossible to even change a burned out BIOS chip which is a common component that fails.

Rubycon are probably the best with nichicon right behind them, look for low ESR or even solid caps, I have done many boards and other devices. Check out badcaps.net for complete kits of high quality caps and great links to the best ones. And there is nothing wrong with repairing a board that old, they were good back in there time
