Turning Turbo Performance on caused my previously stable OC to BSOD 124 as soon as windows started. Turned it off and everything is fine again. What exactally does this setting do?

Gah.. I previously had a very stable 3.8GHz o/c on a C0 stepping i7-920 at CPU VCore of 1.35V and CPU VTT of +225mV on the SZ2R BIOS. Now I've got the 44 BIOS and I am still hitting 101 BSOD's at a CPU VCore of 1.4V and CPU VTT of +250mV with everything else the same.. this is insane..  RAM is running at stock spec only...

I recently moved to Windows7 64-bit (from Vista64), and more recently moved to a SSD for the boot drive, but that should not make this much difference, if any.. I just can't get a stable clock anywhere above 3.4-3.5GHz...  wondering if I should flash back to SZ2R again.

Do you have Turbo Performance turned on? I just posted with a similar problem and turning Turbo Performance off fixed everything.

Yeah I saw that thanks, and had it turned off (also have 'normal' turbo disabled). I'm not sure what the problem is.. seems particularly since I added the SSD a few weeks ago I've been having issues.

Curse Newegg for sending me a C0 instead of D0 stepping last year. .

I guess I could continue cranking up the CPU VCore voltage into the 1.4 range, but then I'll start having additional heat issues to contend with.. also noting my VReg temps becoming a concern at these higher voltages.. *sigh*

Re:EVGA X58 SLI (E758) - BIOS 44 BETA Released Monday, February 22, 2010 2:20 AM (permalink)
Hmm. 3.6GHz (180 x 20) is stable at VCore 1.325V and VTT +250mV with 1.6V on RAM (pretty average for a C0 stepping i7-920), but beyond that it just goes vertical..

I seemed to find a relatively stable 3.8GHz with VCore at 1.4V and VTT at +300 and DIMM at 1.65V (all results are with VDroop on), but that is a whole 0.5V higher on the VCore than the SZ2R BIOS.. and not forgetting that the base VTT is now 1.2V, not 1.1V anymore...  that's a significant amount of extra juice just for a BIOS update..

The core temps and VReg temp are running at about the same level now at 3.6GHz as they were before at 3.8GHz (both idle and load.. although VReg is a bit hotter now at load, strangely).

CO's are known voltage hogs, but still.. something strange here. Just mulling over going back to the old BIOS, or sticking with SZ44 but sacrificing 0.2GHz on the CPU, while retaining a relatively safe voltage level so my CPU lasts longer... or of course I could throw caution to the wind and slam the voltage through the roof for a higher clock.. LOL.. that can become an expensive activity though.

For some reason I have to give more voltage to the CPU to get a stable clock with this BIOS. I'm on air cooling so I rather no have to increase the temp so I'm going back to SZ2Z.

I had the same issue, at first i thought it was the turbo performance mode but even turning that off resulted in Vcore related BSOD's after a while. I'm now stable on this bios with a .025v jump on the vcore. Wonder what causes this.

flashed booted ram stuck at 1066 from 1600, rebooted enabled XMP still 1066, rebooted loaded defaults set everything manually disabled "turbo performance" saved booted still 1066.....

EDIT:
Went back in took it off auto left XMP enabled manually set 2:12 ratio (1600) all works now

Download 44, burned image, reset bios default but had to goto Raid 0 AND first device CD, Reboot got 2 cd drive flashes,  removed cd then had to reboot and and load defaults reset raid and cd first saved then reboot and system crash , had to repair and restore. No 44 update happened. Says S71E 08-13-2008, cpu-z says 10-30-2009 what the h e l l !  I cant get this to work for me. Sys is using usb keyboard  win 7 64 bit pro. Not a happy camper.

Have a nice Day

You've never flashed your bios before have you? The flash routine is more than a couple of flashes from the cd player. If all you got was a couple of flashes then it bootedc on through to windows then you didn't burn the iso file properly. Or did you burn the bin file instead?

Re:EVGA X58 SLI (E758) - BIOS 44 BETA Released Tuesday, March 02, 2010 5:24 AM (permalink)
i'm having problems with my dimms. I have had them overclocked (technically) to 1600 MHz and 7-8-7-20 for the last year in my board with various bios versions (dominator rated xmp 1600 8-8-8-24) After flashing to this bios, though, the memory will run at 1600 but only one stick is recognized. So I was lagging like crazy and had no idea what was up until I saw that I was using 99% of my ram. not good. Usually I use no more than 60% with the full 6GB, but I only have 2 now. Any ideas? I've been messing around and after I cleared cmos it saw the full 6GB. I'll be tinkering more and post whats up.

on an unrelated note my usb G15 keyboard used to work fine through the bios and now I have to break out my PS2 keyboard. Strange because it works at first to call up setup or the boot drive menu but doesn't work after or to tell windows what mode to boot in after a hard shut down. It's running through a usb hub on my monitor but that has never been an issue. ?

EDIT:
Sorry guys, should have read the whole thread. Someone else had the same issue. Solution: the OC presets from old bios versions arent quite compatible with this new bios version. Clear CMOS and then reset everything manually. And read the whole post before you post :)

USB keyboard issue still eludes me though. It works to call up a menu at first but doesnt work at all after that. If this is just me if might be because it's running though a hub. No idea. PS2 keyboard is always at hand at any rate.

This BIOS isnt working too well for me.  With SZ2X bios, sleep mode works perfectly.  With this bios, when I wake up from sleep, my CAS latency changes to 19.

and not forgetting that the base VTT is now 1.2V, not 1.1V anymore

when did this change occur?

so +175 vtt in this bios = +275 vtt in SZ2X?

WOW! If this is true I cannot believe EVGA would make a change like this and not document it in the changelog!  I was adding 100 more mv to the VTT and not even knowing that it is happening?? Come on now!  This is unacceptable, especially since how criticical this voltage is to stability.

Sounds like the new BIOS flash is causing more headaches than relieving  them.  I have the dreaded USB issues with my board and since EVGA "can't" or wont reproduce them I'm stuck with this over priced waste of time.  next time I'm going ASUS.  As far as the Mobo taking 20 seconds to start POST I can confirm that the thing does take forever just to load anything, then it takes even longer to cycle through all the prompts.  If you turn on the EVGA splash screen in the BIOS it may seem like it reduces load time as you get to look at a logo while you wait for it to POST but it still takes an awfully long time.
