Imposter! But in all seriousness and getting back on topic...can you PLEASE fix this EVGA? Or give us the basic courtesy of an update or acknowledgement?

I am going to take a shot in the dark here and say there is nothing to fix. The global power limit has been raised to allow for the card to pull 500W max. But that is just one power limit. The card also has other internal power limits and I am doubting the XOC bios can even change them(or if it can, they won't). And it seems like thoes are the power limits are getting PL LIMIT before the card hits the 500W limit. As for why some cards can get closer to the 500W than others? It is likely a silicon lottery type situation where some cards will use less power (voltage) in certain loads, so the card can push itself more and it will get closer to the global 500W limit. And as for why some other 3pin cards are able to get to the 500W limit easier? That could be sooo many reason since they are different cards. Likely hardware reasons. With more data with may be able to sus out why. There are some good takes in this thread.

yeah this is what I have been thinking. I was watching a few shunting videos online and even after they shunt like 6 or so resistors the board STILL doesnt open up. Like they will get more power limit but not what they should get based on the shunts. They need to shunt nearly every last one because all kinds of power balancing going on with the board and THEN it works out.
I think the bios in and of itself is working just fine but it's being limited by board design

Why would EVGA release a bios that would be so limited by their own board design? They couldn't possibly think the issues would go unnoticed, and I can’t imagine their engineers didn’t know how this would play out. Even the argument that it was purely for marketing purposes doesn't make sense as the potential rewards don’t offset the guaranteed backlash. So both the mistake and the intentional explanations lack believability...but then what does that leave us with?

WOOOOOOOOOO! Testing now.

How did it go???

Several posts after in the thread. Long story short I don't get the full power draw - PCIE pin 3 doesn't draw what the other two do. Best Port Royal on the 500W vbios is on par with a certain other 480W vbios.

Is the 3080 xoc still in beta? How many beta revisions have been released for the 3080? Was there a change log with each subsequent revision release? Was there feedback acknowledgement and integration? These are all hallmarks of proper beta usage...I’m not convinced the word beta is being used accurately here, whether by design or incompetence.

An official comment from our friends at EVGA around this topic would really be appreciated. I still hope it is a beta and will be fixed (somehow).

It's already been provided by Jacob, "Thanks for the feedback, we are looking into it." That was Friday, today is Sunday, EVGA gets weekends off as well. We'll need to wait for them to figure out what is going on, and how they want to spin it when (if) they decide to make a statement. I'm glad we at least got an acknowledgment, more telling is (personal opinion mind you) Jacob having linked back to the original BIOS. I get the feeling it is going to be a week or two before we have any solid answers. Puts us all in a pretty precarious position for sure, if a working BIOS that provides a tangible performance increase is released I would keep my card, even though the silicon is rather mediocre. But w/ Big Navi right around the corner there's a very real possibility the resell value of our cards is going to tank if AMD can flood the market w/ competitive (not necessarily better) parts at a lower price. At this point, it's a bit of a gamble for us, keep the card hoping this is something that can be resolved by a BIOS update and lose out on future short term resell value or flip the card right now and risk not being able to find a different AIB card in the near future. Quite the conundrum.

I am suspect of the firmware 2.1.14 that PX1 forced onto my FTW III ultra when moving for PX1 1.1.09 to 1.1.0.11 after flashing to this Beta bios.

Just to add some positivity/encouragement for EVGAs efforts in helping resolve this issue, I really do want these cards to be the best they can be. With stock bios, I achieved #6, #8, and #6 in superposition leaderboards for 1080p extreme, 4K optimized, and 8k optimized respectively: https://benchmark.unigine...reme/single-gpu/page-1

I haven’t been able to match or top these scores with the 500w bios :(

It’s in the normal position. The only difference between the two is the fan curve.

For my 3090 FTW3 Ultra, the stock normal VBIOS was 440W max per GPUZ VBIOS readout, and 450W for the OC VBIOS (along with a more aggressive fan curve).

This is definitely not a temp problem. I actually think its a firmware thing. My highest score was with the original bios and I haven't been able to get close with this one but the game stable one is about the same (although still crashing).

FFS Give EVGA a chance to deal with it. I'm sure they'll drop a new firmware/bios and well be getting our 1 percent more performance :)!

On another note, anyone else getting a lot more crashing to desktop on this bios on something that passes Port Royal 10 times in a row? Was playing deep rock and it crashed 3x.

Re: EVGA GeForce RTX 3090 FTW3 XOC BIOS BETA 2020/10/25 23:07:56 (permalink)
A couple of n00b questions/opinions from me too:

- Are the GPU BIOS and firmware the same thing? As @Zeddivile indicated above and in my totally untested and unproven opinion I think my 3090 FTW3 Ultra's performance dropped after I installed the PX1 v1.1.0.11 which in turn installed the firmware v2.1.1.4. Seems like there's no going back either... Why would that be though?

- With my first 3090 card (a Z0TAK), when running Port Royal, I was consistently hitting 450W. Not so with the FTW3 Ultra set on the OC bios (the original not this beta yet)--I hit 450ish but it's not nearly as consistent during benchmarking as it was with my previous card. Having read quite a few of the past 374 posts in this thread, I haven't found a good reason to upgrade my BIOS to this beta version yet. IMHO, if you've just received your beautiful, shiny, new FTW3 Ultra and are reading this, avoid these two things: upgrading to the latest version of PX1 and updating your BIOS to this beta version for now!

- My last and most distressing problem is regarding the results of my Time Spy runs. I've run it several times and I've been getting absolutely awful results--even compared to a 3080 (an Aorus Master) I played with for a few days! My best result for now using mem & GPU clock at stock and fan set at full speed has been 14,436 (Graphics score of 15,635)! In contrast, with my previous 3090, I was getting graphics score of 19,4XX! Surprisingly, in Port Royal my scores are very close (almost better than) the 3090 Z... Also when running Port Royal, I get close to 450 a lot, but when running Time Spy, it's very rare for the power to reach 430 even... Nothing else in my system has changed since Z0TAC. My PSU is an EVGA SuperNOVA 1200 P2 80+ PLATINUM just in case and 3900X, ASUS Crosshair VIII Hero, 32GB G.Skill TridentZ 3600, etc.

I understand my questions are general and not specific to this beta BIOS but at the same time, since I saw some similar posts re the firmware, I figured maybe someone can shed some light on my current situation and offer some tips.

Your Time Spy score is weird. I can get a score around 21,7xx to 22,0xx with colorful 3090 advanced oc flashing EVGA's 500w bios. Even without a 500w bios. Any 3090 should get a score around 19,xxx.

i thought one of them should be problem
when i crash an oc scanner with .11 PX1 and XOC BIOS
my card's fan and power target stuck at last setting.
Even i set default and reboot pc,it stuck agin.
i tried remove/install PX1 and not be solved
i have to DDU clean the NVIDIA driver and install again, that just resolved it
But when i boot the pc at the sixth time, it stuck again
never faced the issue with factory bios in .09 or .11 px1
now i have the issue in .11 px1 with 2.1.14 firware and 456.98 driver and XOC 500w bios
but my scores and performance are same with previous bios

By the way, I see quite a few people on top 15-50 hall of fame for timespy etc and they have EVGA cards and what looks like to be on water. (forget the top 10-15 who use more exotic coolings)

Are they really using the standard 450W bios and reaching 2100 mhz sustained in the bench ?

Example:
Nr 27
Vendor EVGA Corporation # of cards 1
Clock frequency 2,190 MHz (1,395 MHz)
Average clock frequency 2,092 MHz
Average temperature 39 °C

Not bad if that is the case and then temps is more important than I thought for the 3090. Perhaps the optimus block is worth the investment after all and the extra 50W we might get in a while is the icy on the cake.

If you win the chip lottery yes absolutely. There is a guy i was spoke to who has an evga card that is able to score 15k in port royal with his new evga card
This is the guy https://www.3dmark.com/pr/434910 notice at 53 average temp and 2,114 average core.

I was also able to hold comparable clocks with 2,205 peak and 2,114 core as seen here: https://www.3dmark.com/pr/423566
also at 53C average. As far as peak is concerned, ive managed 2,235. The card even ran at 2,250 but it ended up crashing midway. So If i can do something like 20c ambient and 32c under load (Gamers Nexus got 8c over ambient with optimus water block so my estimate is not unrealistic ) should be able to sustain 2,200Mhz under load!
So yes these types of numbers are possible but dont expect it as its not realistic for 99% of ppl. your literally picking out from the leaderboard aka lottery winners

The reason for the difference in scores with same average clocks is i ran a much lower memory OC. I thought i just had average memory chips, but i was suspicious so i opened up the backplate last night and the thermal pads are on only 50% of the memory chips . Like it was half the size it should be in terms of width as the other half was naked die. I know this is wrong as ive seen tear downs online with it covering the whole thing so i went ahead and ordered 3mm thick fuji. Bad job evga
If your getting bad memory clocks its worth it to open the backplate and check out how bad of a job they did with thermal pads

The shipping bios should be 450w
Keep that one for now. Also, there are 2 different versions of the same 450w floating around

You see there as well MSI, Gigabyte, ASUS, etc videocards, they all vendor is EVGA, because of this same 500W Bios.
I have actually MSI 3090 Gaming X Trio, but 3Dmark says EVGA corporation -
3dmark.com/spy/14785654
Here is how MSI hold 500w with EVGA BIOS, total stable 500w and some 516w spikes in Time Spy Extreme -

btw, my PSU is Corsair RM750x 750W
One game that can hold stable 500W is Call of Duty Remastered you can try this.

Any problems controlling all 3 fans with Afterburner?

it is disappointing to see that other cards work stable at 500w and the EVGA's that are the authors of this improvement are not capable of doing so.

First fan control in PX1 controls one fan, another control controls two others fans, so no problem. I think it was with MSI bios same. Also all Displayports are working fine.
I just tried Time Spy Extreme and only used PX1 and result is same - constant 500W

Re: EVGA GeForce RTX 3090 FTW3 XOC BIOS BETA 2020/10/26 11:28:15 (permalink)
So just for fun I tried reflashing the stock OC bios back over the beta one for now since there are issues with the 500w one obviously. After doing so, I couldn't get the card to pull more than 350w at 100% power limit. It seems the bios that was posted by Jacob is either modified from what shipped on the cards, or something else is going on after flashing this beta bios. I double checked the bios version numbers and they match from the shipping and the one Jacob posted, but obviously there is something wrong. I reflashed the beta bios and its back to normal. That said, the beta bios rarely gets to 500w, but I seem to be able to get the card to pull 500w in firestrike extreme after a few minutes of heatsoaking the card. Otherise, I rarely see 450w+ power draw with this new bios. I have left the normal shipping Bios alone and have been doing everything on the OC bios switch side. Not sure if any of this is useful for testing but this has been my experience the past weekend.

Competitor cards using EVGA software to devalue EVGA hardware and posting their results to EVGA’s own forums, while EVGA posts about pumpkins on Twitter. Yikes.
