I have Precision X1 running and it's showing the memory clock spiking to 7000. With precision XOC it was setting off an alarm. X1 is also set to set off an alarm but doesn't. I haven't done any OC yet, everything is factory. It's a brand new build (my first) and it's been running fine the last three weeks. Now I'm getting these spikes. Any Ideas? Thx, -Dave

I haven't used X1 yet (I just got this card on Friday) but I've been using Afterburner to overclock and I have found a nice stable OC with zero problems. I've only applied a modest OC - 50mhz on teh base and 500mhz on the memory clock but it makes a big difference.

I haven't done any OC yet, so I'm not understanding why I'm getting these spikes.

I'm guessing your core clock is also spiking?

Here are the top causes of why a GPU would run at full clocks at idle... #1 You're running multiple monitors. Fix: Enable mutil display power saver using nvidia inspector.#2 Your machine has a virus. Fix: Scan computer using malwarebytes.#3 One or more programs running in the background are using your GPU. Fix: Perform a clean boot of windows.#4 Power management mode inside the nvidia control panel is set to prefer maximum performance. Fix: Set power management mode to adaptive then reboot your computer.#5 Running a resolution of 2560x1440 @ 144Hz. Fix: Change refresh rate to 120Hz.#6 K-Boost is enabled inside Precision X. Fix: Disable K-Boost.#7 Shadowplay is enabled inside geforce experience. Fix: Disable shadowplay inside geforce experience OR completely uninstall geforce experience from your machine (highly recommended)

Thx for your help 1. I dont have multiple monitors, but I do have SpaceDesk running in the background for my laptop that I use as a second monitor. 2. I better not have a virus, It's a brand new machine, only been running about 3 weeks and I only go to respectable sites: EVGA, ASUS, Joe Satriani, stuff like that. 3. I'll do that here in a few if some other tricks don't work. 4. Power management was set to "optimal" 5. 1920x1080 60hz 6. I don't see K-Boost in Precision x1, I know it's in Precision XOC 7. I don't have geforce experience installed. ( I seconded your motion on " completely uninstall geforce experience from your machine (highly recommended)" a long time ago with my last machine.

Looks like you had firefox open while taking readings. Certain websites can cause the gpu clocks to spike up and down due to browsers using gpu hardware acceleration. The simple fix for that would be to disable hardware acceleration inside your web browsers.

Well, I did the clean boot and turned off all background running apps in windows. That seems to stop the idle spikes but I'm still getting them really bad when I do anything at all. I'm getting this multi colored side bar in the NVIDIA control panel and its flashing. I got it in Block Ops and Heavenly Benchmark too. Are these 7000MHz spikes damaging my GPU? It's brand new.

The spikes won't harm your gpu. The multi colored bar is coming from having fcat enabled inside precision.

If I reinstall Precision XOC should I just turn off the alarm and just not worry about it? It's at default settings. Cause that thing sent me through the ceiling the first time it went off.

LOL! I was going to do that as soon as I got the second GPU and the liquid cooling set up. In the settings there is a check box in both X1 and XOC that says "play alarm sound when value is out of range" That is what started all this to begin with, that alarm went off and my speakers were turned up a bit and I went through the ceiling. Shot straight up. It's like XOC was saying DANGER! DANGER! YOUR FRYING YOUR SYSTEM YOU IDIOT! When I never did any OC, it was factory settings right out of the box. I've had the new sys running about a month now keeping an eye on the temps and don't remember it spiking like this. Nor did that damn alarm go off. Maybe I didn't have it checked.
