Funny that you put it that way, then maybe NVIDA Should Install 5 GB of Memory and State 4 GB of Usable Memory.
This way users will get their full 4 GB of memory and NIVDIA Gets their "BUFFER ZOMG"

 exactly.

And what happens when the card hits 4GB threshold on the memory?  Will you return it for a full refund?  Why is it that now everything can run 4K or you think it can?

Too bad you can't hit the 4GB threshold on the GTX 970 and if you did your card would become extremely unstable. But I would assume you can on this card at least. Maybe there trying to compensate for their 80% usability of the GTX 970. I don't understand why your poking holes at the 970 refunds; a lot of people don't seem to take it seriously. Maybe you should try an expierment of your own where you try to get your 970 to pass 3512mb of vram and see what happens. I did twice and had a hard reboot both times after only seconds of passing the threshold. This suggests to me that my card is unfit for 4k gaming which limits me in the future when I bought the card expecting it to perform.

I have and so has my brother, and we have no issues.  It is not the majority that have that problem. Pass 3.6 we are smooth as butter.

Doesn't sound like a problem with your graphics card at all. I did an experiment with Shadow of Mordor running in the background while I played League of Legends. Shadow of Mordor was unplayable due to ultra settings at 200% resolution. According to Precision X SOM alone was using 3.8 gbs. Once I got into a game of League it was using the entire 4gbs. Without SOM running I get 140 200 fps in LoL, with I get 80-90 fps no stuttering whatsoever. The only way I have been able to cause a hard reboot that I believe was directly caused by my 970 was when I hmmmmm....... oh right it never happened.....

Will this be an option to step up to for those of us who bought the 2GB version? I'm also curious if your current 960 backplate (100-BP-2963-B9) will fit this model.

Is this EVGA doing like they, and a few other companies, did with the 780 6gb, and only a few companies will follow suit with a 960 4gb? Is ASUS or MSI or Gigabyte doing a variant as well?

1st that is not true at all, nothing but total nonsense.

2nd you have a problem with something in your PC if your having to hard reboot and it has nothing to do with the memory design of the 970

Re: EVGA GeForce GTX 960 - Now Equipped with 4GB 2015/03/05 06:12:37 (permalink)
So here are my questions:

1) Will this new 4GB GTX 960 perform on par or better than the latest GTX 970 SSC?

2) Is the VRAM optimized to be the same speed throughout the card, or is this another GTX 970 with 3.5 + 0.5?

3) Is the price less than or equal to the GTX 970?

If this is truly a better card, than I may consider just using my "step up" to step down, get 2 of these cards, and when Dx 12 comes out it will be 8GB of VRAM at the same speed throughout both cards.  Don't get me wrong, I love the 970....I just am afraid the investment long term is going to suffer, especially if I am mixing a 970 with another card when Dx12 comes out.
