I have an old GTX 670 4gb card.
I am making a retro arcade out of an old pc.
It installs fine, used DDU to clean out old files, installed the latest drivers.
Using EVGA precision to monitor.
(testing in my main rig)

The card shows it hitting max temps of 42c @65% fan speed no looad, just browsing on line.(is that too high of temps?)
After about 3-5 minutes, the PC freezes.
Need to reset pc.

Any suggestions?

Obviously there is something wrong with the 670 if your rig works fine with the 1070ti FTW2 installed.

I thought so, yest im thinking its just high temps,(mem temps).  I have no artifacting, and no driver crashes.
The pads have leaked fairly well, not sure if replacing them would help. there is a bit of residue around each pad.

It boots fine, and generally takes 3-5 minutes before it freezes.

Leaking pads isn't a problem. You say your mem temps are the issue, but the 670 has no way to monitor mem temps. 42c isn't a problem.

Yeah, you are right, i cant monitor the temps to know.
If the pads had leaked enough to become dry, then the memory might be overheating.
I know the Thermal paste is good, because i replaced it.

I guess, logically, if the driver isnt causing issues, and the chip is getting good temps, and there is no artifacting, then i think its either heat on another component, or not enough power, but EVGA 850 g2 should handle that no problem.

    Updated Bios for the gpu.
installed drivers, started windows.. Freeze in 3-5 minutes.

Let it cool a few minutes, started again, and set fan speeds as high as possible with precision x oc.
Running for about 15 minutes now.  no new freezes.
Going to see how long this lasts.  i do have thermal pads on order... im hoping that is what the problem was/is.

PCXOC is showing gpu temps @ 29C right now, under minimal load(web browsing).
We will see.. cross your fingers folks!

BTW does a KR model have a lifetime warranty?

Backplate is cool to the touch.
Im afraid, this 100% fan speed is where it has lived most of its life.

The pc i removed it from, had very poor cable management, i dont know how it was working before, unless the fan was at 100%.

The temps on the backplate when it froze last were about 180F or 82c.
That would coincide with some of the memory, and i know it was just to the offset of the main hole in the backplate.

Ehh.. oh well, its had a fairly long life.
So i noticed in PCXOX, that the Temp Target link is broken by default. The temp says 0c.

Is that an error, or is that how it should be?
I mean there is a temp sensor there, shouldnt the temp target be about 75-85c by default?  I know that 95c was the max temp of the card.

Sorry, guess im diagnosing it all myself, and just posting results... but hey!  Were still alive and kicking!

Saijin, thanks for sticking with me on this bud!

Got a little anxious, and started WoW, something not terribly demanding gpu wise.
Temps spiked to 51c, and pc froze. so that is under as much load as i really care for at this time.

    Definitely a heat issue.
im thinking it has just seen better days.
If the chip hits 51c and freezes, the mem is probably hitting about 7-10c higher.  If it hits 10-15c higher than that, im sure it will freeze.

Will default back to my 1070ti.
Wait for the thermal pads and try again.

Temp target reading 0 is normal I believe for the 670. You should be using precisionx 16 instead of precision xoc.

If all else fails, I'd take the thing apart and bake the PCB like this to reflow any solder cracking that might exist, and hope for the best.

Solder cracking on the PCB (not really uncommon with cards of that era) will definately cause freezing and has for me..The 'oven trick' fixed it.

If you bake it, do it only with the GPU side up..200C for 10 minutes.

The video is edited at the 2:09 mark to show 385F (196C)..I just put it at 200C here..Prop it up in the corners with foil balls, GPU side up..Yes, preheat the oven first.

Baking might fix it for at least a while, or a long time, or not at all..I have a card (EVGA 9800 GTX) that I baked like 5 times in 2 years, but each time baking fixed it ..Still works.

Most toxins come from the solder itself.. which are normally released when applying the solder the first time.
Thats why oven reflows are hit and miss, not enough of the toxins(rosins/Lead) for it to perform like new solder, and what solder does flow, becomes more brittle and susceptible to failure.

So putting it in my oven is not a problem, but once i do, i will put it to auto clean, and burn any toxins out!

    Need Thermal pad sizes.

This image shows Green rubber blocks, so the backplate is not tightened down too far. measuring about 2.15mm
The Red Thermal Pads are reading 2.28mm, but are super squishy, so cant tell if they are 2.3 or 2.5mm. possibly they have expanded, as they are real foamy/squishy, almost like jello.
The Blue Pads are measuring 1.61mm, but still not sure of what they should be. foamy/squishy also. just not as much.

Appreciate all help in this matter.

Looks like you need 2.5 & 1.5 pads.

Im thinking the same thing, but would like an EVGA response to this to be sure.

So basically my response from EVGA Technical support was.. 1mm.
Then a deeper check says, .5mm on one, to 1.mm or 1.5 mm on the other.

If the rubber blocks are measuring 2.15mm, then 1.5 mm pad i dont think would touch any thing, if the plate is tightened down .5 mm.

Can a mod forward this post to other Technical support people, so i can try to get answers that may seem more reasonable.
Tech Support, when i called answered everything to the best of his knowledge, but the specs still dont seem right.

    Thanks!
