Comparing results from the 295's is not a good representation of what these 400 series cards can do as they are single gpu's. Two vs a dual-GPU, yes. ;)

There is nothing wrong with that.  The cards offer similar performance, who cares about the amount of GPUs?  The less GPUs the better, since SLI doesn't scale perfectly.  That's yet another reason GTX 480s should offer higher scores.  But 3DMark has always been strange.  The 4800 series got low Vantage scores.

Of course you can measure them up however you want to. To each his own. The 295 comparison I put out is just that, my opinion..nothing else. These cards are still new, give them time bud. ;)

Oh I know that, newer drivers always improve performance.  Even with the current drivers, the GTX 480 almost always pwns the GTX 295.  3DMark is just weird, which is nothing new.  I can't wait until I get my GTX 480, I wonder how it will do in Vantage compared to my GTX 260 CORE 216 55nm SLI setup.  But Vantage is one benchmark, the 480 will lay the smackdown on my GTX 260 C216 SLI setup everywhere else.

No doubt 3Dmark is long over due for an update with DX11 graphics tests. That's where these cards will really shine. ;)

Yup, in most DX11 benchmarks a GTX 470 beats a 5870.  Poor ATI.  That reminds me, we're overdue for a new 3DMark program.  They must be making a DX11 program.

Your overclocks are nice. My boards won't go past 820 (1640)  / 2000MHz or I start to crash vantage.
I'l actually pulled my 4th board for now and replaced the slot with my creative sb card. Once the neccessary patches come out I'll put it back in.

An interesting note for my system was that the DX11 drivers that came with the EVGA boards (on the CD) caused BSOD's all over the place. I ended up sticking with DX10 and the NVIDIA certified drivers for now.

I'll try and get some pics later today (forgive the mess of the wires, I've not had a chance to tie everthing up yet)

my maxed out gtx295's from back in October of 2009

you know...it might be somthing as simple as an nvdia setting..

try using a different rendering method. you have a few to choose from.
SLI mode SLI-Mode setting

Two nVidia graphic cards that are linked in an SLI configuration can work in four different modes:
[class="definition"]Single
This mode effectively disables SLI. Only one card will be used to render the graphics. If a game doesn't work with SLI at all, use this option.
This is also the usual option to be used in the global settings. Since the correct SLI mode is defined in the game profiles which overrides the global setting anyway, there is no need to set a SLI profile globally.
[class="definition"]Auto
This mode tells the driver to select the optimal SLI mode automatically. Unfortunately, this almost never works correctly. It's better to try each of the other two modes, to find out which one works better.
[class="definition"]Split Frame Rendering (SFR)
Split Frame Rendering means that each frame is split into two parts, and each card only renders one of those parts. An automated load balancing algorithm makes sure that the work is devided most effectively between the two cards.
This mode is slightly more CPU intensive.
[class="definition"]Alternate Frame Rendering (AFR)
When using the Alternate Frame Rendering, each other frame is rendered by one of the two cards alternatively. So one card renders a complete image, while the other card is already rendering the following image.
This mode is very CPU effective. In theory, it can introduce a slight lag (i.e. mouse movements are not as immediate as normal), but this effect is so small, that practically nobody ever notices it.
[class="definition"]Alternate Frame Rendering 2 (AFR2)
This is working exactly like AFR. nVidia introduced this setting because it is more compatible with some games.
Since it's just AFR with some compatibility flags set (see below), you can activate AFR2 by clicking the button "AFR2" on the bottom of the list of compatibility flags.

settings like these are in the nvidia control panel.
change a few and see if your fps doesn't get better or worse...

A note on noise levels.

During benchmarking = pretty loud. Enough for my wife to keep asking... What is that noise?

During game playing BFBC for example maxed out settings seems like they don't even kick in higher than the initial fan level. I can hardly hear them at all.

LOL that sounds like my Wife.  I really used to drive her crazy when I first bought my Logitech 5500's and tested them out for a straight week and she was running around saying all I hear out of your room is "Grenade!" "Grenade!".  Now all I use is head phones so I don't incur her wrath anymore.

They crash in vantage and at least BFBC.

I should be converting to water cooling in ~ 4 weeks (collecting all the goodies right now) so I'm hoping to eliminate heat as a factor. For those who have not tried it the case gets too hot to touch on 4 way sli

The 4th card sits as a place holder right now. I'm too lazy to pull it out.. Working drivers might just appear one day!

Re:EVGA GTX 480SC - 4 Way SLI 2010/05/04 19:53:57 (permalink)
I am a little bummed about your Tri SLI result even on Air. I know on Water I am pushing my 2 card pretty hard and am just 2,300 points shy of your score :(. Hopefully some driver improvements will allow the scaling to improve.

I can honestly also tell you the i7 980x can hardly keep up with 2 cards maxed OC'ed. I need more CPU speed to get better scores. These cards like memory bandwidth and CPU bandwidth.

Thanks
