Hey CyberstormXIII,

Have you tried any tweaking/overclocking software on the Z9PE-D8 or the SR-X?

Just seems like a way you could bypass the bclk limit if the tweaking was done within Windows/Linux.  I want to try this myself as I have a Z9PE-D8, however I have not got around to purchasing any processors yet.

Hello.

It is a good idea, and its not for the lack of trying to get it to work.

But unfortunately no, I have not tried it, because there is no tools that works (as far as I know) :

The E-Leet Utility for the SR-X is not working - only provides multiplier changes (but they does not seem to change at all) and the most important, the BCLK is not able to be changed at all - all options are greyed out.

For the Asus, I have installed the software, but I have not found any tweaking options in windows either. (I have tried to install / Use the Asus Rampage IV Extreme Utilities to no avail)

If you can direct me to a Generic OC utility, I might have better luck, ... though I wouldnt hold my horses - until there are utilities that are written specifically for each board, I dont think its going to happen (I could be wrong --- maybe someone can tell me something that I have done wrong, or If I overlooked a program, or some registry changes, or a generic tool)

Best regards : CyberstormXIII

The only overclocking programs that come to mind are Throttlestop, CPU-Tweaker, SetFSB and Ai Overclock Tuner(Asus). I'm sure more exist but a little searching would be needed, if I think of anymore I'll post them.

They probably won't do anything at all  but it could be worth a shot. Not even sure if SetFSB would work with any current architecture.

All the quoted programs you mentioned could be usefull for boards with bios that "don't" have OC'ing options but the SR-X and the Asus board do have these options.
The issue is that by raising the BCLK you raise the entire PCI Buss and once you cross app 105 things go bad fast.
What is needed is a way to isolate the BCLK from the rest of the PCI Buss but everyone I've talked to says they've tried all the tricks and got butkus( nothing)
EXCEPT one guy and I think he not I should be the one to show what he'd done..

Yeah I'd definitely say you're right. A good way to test that this is 100% the reason for the bclk wall would be to use a board like the ASRock X79 Extreme4 to test a E5 Xeon with a higher bclk clock as this board has a fixed PCI-E bus that is locked down and unaffected in bclk overclocks. It just so happens I also have access to one it's just not much good when I don't have the processors  Would seriously love to see some 4Ghz+ speeds on the SR-X and Asus.

Hahahaha yes at this point we have to hope for some K/X Xeons which is pretty unlikely anyway or hope that Ivy Bridge EP follows the same pattern that Sandy Bridge did in that the Xeons shared the same bclk limit as the 1155 (2500,2600 etc..) CPUs as the new Ivy Bridge chips are capable of higher bclk clocks such as 110mhz+

Just on a side note - A site called Liquid Nitrogen Overclocking (they don't actually use liquid nitrogen lol) sell servers running with what I'm pretty certain are the E5-2687W's. These servers are sold with a clock speed of 4Ghz so this leads me to believe that the 106-7+ bclk clocks can be stabilized somehow.

The issue with turbo is that it only applies when not all cores are being used in the first place, so it'll never reach 4 Ghz with all cores fully loaded to 100% anyhow....Might reach close to 3.4 Ghz in the worst case scenario with BCLK at 107 and all cores maxed out.

well, the retail ones (Intel Xeon E5-2687w)'s have :

38x 8c turbo. (I think 1-4 cores can run at the 38x multiplier, but I havent been able to capture a frame, where that could prove it).

34x is the multiplier for all cores.

34x 107 = 3638MHz = 3.638GHz

According to HWinfo64 (which I also previously linked to a cinebench 11.529 result, (running), one sees, that the cores are running at 3.643GHz, meaning that 3643 / 34 = 107.147059MHz

The same images that I linked in post #277 of this thread:
http://img819.imageshack....o64cinebench11529r.png
http://img802.imageshack....o64cinebench11529r.png

I would find it a bit strange if the EVGA had not locked down the PCI-E bus like on the ASRock Extreme X79, when just about everyone knows, that getting the BCLK up makes the entire system unstable. If anything EVGA should/would have gone the same way - or not... hard to know exactly - but there are probably programs that can show the differences - I havent looked into that when testing, as it would make little difference for me in attaining a higher oc - as I am not about to solder on my boards  - not that extreme, nor do I have the time for that exactly ;-)

Anyways, if there is anything you would like to know feel free to ask (or look backwards in this thread - I have written quite a few things in the thread and have not made a compilation of it all... yet).

Hmm, as far as I know you can't modify the PCIe clock unless you program the ICC configuration - and Intel has pretty much crippled the ICC options in 2P Xeon E5 CPUs...

Cyberstorm:
E5-2687W's:
All cores on turbo: 34 multi
1-2 cores on turbo: 38 multi
So to hit 4Ghz on all cores one would need a BCLK of 117.64
I just don't think thats doable unless someone figures out a way to hack the cpu's themselves.
That's WAY beyond any talents I have..WAY beyond!
I think for the time being we'll just have to be satisfied with 34x105 for 3570MHz..and write Intel and bitc..oops, politely relay our feelings on this topic..

Which Xeons do you have, since you "hope" they are recognized ? (Guessing you have the ES versions).

For the Asus Z9PE-D8, I know that the QAMS/QAMT ES does not work, but the QA91/QA92 ES does.

As I does not have ES's in my possesion, I cannot test for you though :(

Re:EVGA Classified SR-X 2012/05/11 12:35:24 (permalink)
Well, i canceled my order of the motherboard from performance PC's since it seems they were having trouble confirming my address from paypall for some odd reason....

I tried to order from EVGA directly and it seems that it is having trouble with my credit card information....I'll try later with a different card

It's mostly because with the SR-X, aside from the price of the motherboard and that of the higher end 8 core Xeon's wich aren't exactly cheap even if they are the best performing ones, don't get the advantage of "free" performance by overclocking the processors, so the SR-X is just like any other dual socket motherboard made by tyan or supermicro or asus.

Without that bonus what's the point of it, though i was surprised by the relatively low price of the 16 core AMD interlagos(dual 8 core bulldozers), wich top out at 1200$ each for the fastest version, so if the idea is to use software that can scale to 64 threads, and one can't overclock either the interlagos or the intel E2690 Xeon 8 cores, i wouldn't proclaim a victor in advance given there's 32 extra cores with the AMD option.

8 core sandy bridge E Xeon's are good but twice as fast as a bulldozer they are not in order to overcome that much of a disadvantage, and either option is close to the same price, but you get 2 processors from intel(16 cores/32 threads) and almost 4 processors from AMD(64 cores/64 threads)

If you get a quad socket board and 4 16 core AMD interlagos you will need to run a server operating system. Win 7 Pro and Ult support one or two processor sockets, the Win 7 Home versions support one socket. For 4 CPU sockets you need to run MS Windows Server 2008.

Exactly right - from Microsoft support :
http://windows.microsoft....ts/system-requirements

PCs with multi-core processors:
Windows 7 was designed to work with today's multi-core processors. All 32-bit versions of Windows 7 can support up to 32 processor cores, while 64‑bit versions can support up to 256 processor cores.

PCs with multiple processors (CPUs):
Commercial servers, workstations, and other high-end PCs may have more than one physical processor. Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise, and Ultimate allow for two physical processors, providing the best performance on these computers. Windows 7 Starter, Home Basic, and Home Premium will recognize only one physical processor.

So then you would either have to run Linux or Microsoft Windows 2008 Server or the new (to be released, a beta is downloadable): Windows 2012 Server (the server version of Windows 8) - and needless to say, those versions are prohibitively expensive - you would probably be much better of creating 2 or more computers with dual xeon e5's instead - if you needed that much processing power - at least hardware wise, you would get much more processing power that way (if you properly factor in the cost of the windows server operating systems)

Unfortunately, for 3d rendering I'm coming to the same conclusion regarding my locked down dual 2687W Sandy Bridge Xeons running on the ASUS Z9PE-D8 WS - Dual Socket 2011 vis a vis the same two chips running singularly (or even two clock tweaked 3930Ks running) on two x79 motherboards.
