I have done some searching and hours upon hours of troubleshooting. I have been away for a while and maybe someone can give me some perspective on the matter... Issue: I have been running one 3978-KR for a year with no issues. Just bought a second card (same model 3978-KR) and it took over 3 minutes to get signed in to my account. I checked CPU usage an it stayed at 99% for about 2 min (previous boot time is ~35 seconds from power to desktop) and CPU usage ~40% max. The system is just slow, to the point that even with SLI enabled games stutter and driver un/install took almost 30 min! Mouse will lag across screen and programs take forever to launch. "Played" some games with SLI enabled and the got nice and loaded down with no errors/crash. Actions taken: -Clean install of drivers from nVidia multiple times -Both cards run flawless alone and are exact PN match -Tested multiple PCI-e slot configs -Changed PCI-e 6+8 adapters -Used different SLI bridge and no bridge with identical results (used on my SLI 470s) -Tested each bridge with voltmeter, they work Specs: -MSI MS-7666 -i7 950 @ 3.8GHz (H105 74c full load 12 hours) -G.Skill Sniper 3x4GB @ 1600 (XMP) -CM Silent Pro Gold 1200W (96A 12v) -Adata SX900 (OS) -2x EVGA 970 FTW+ 3879-KR -2x Samsung 850 RAID 0 -Windows 10 Pro x64 -GeForce 361.91 If I left anything out let me know. I may use this as an excuse to get a 980Ti.

What happens when you use the newest card by itself with the older card completely removed from the system? Does the system lag when using just one video card in the pci-e slot where your currently have the newest card installed?

i7 950 with a pair of 970's...
Want to say it's a bottle neck some where's or a bio's setting incorrect.
Stuff like this I wish I had a case for my old rig to try this. I have an i5 760 @ 4.0GHz...
Only other thing I can think of is Bio's needs an update. Sense its an old board, maybe check and make sure PCI-E lanes are set at 2.0
Kinda hard to tell because you're gimping an already well out dated 950 and expecting flawless capabilities. Don't think that CPU is ment to SLI with current hardware. Pushing far to much pixel horsepower for that old chugger to keep up with I/O.
Would be my guess. Single 980 Ti maybe the way to get but SLi definitely isn't.

If his CPU is bottlenecking him with 2 970s, wouldn't the CPU also be a bottleneck for a 980 Ti since it's roughly the same if not more powerful?

If you experience BSODs, crashes, or POST failures or odd performance issues with 900 series cards in SLI on an x58-based motherboard, you may need to increase the Memory Low Gap setting in the BIOS. This setting should be under Frequency/Voltage Control > Memory. Set this to 3G and it should resolve the issue.

Technically, you don't need a case to power up a computer, just need a control switch to signal the motherboard to turn it on. a case does make it "better" though. Good times of having all the gear of your pc laying around while gaming Back on topic.... I would take the cards and put them into a friend's PC that you know has a better processor and see how his processor reacts to the 970s.

Yes I am, I used to run 2x 470 and then upgraded to a 670 and formerly a 970, now I am trying to run 2 but they hate each other. I am glad for you that your CPU will clock that high. How long have you been running that OC, what are your other voltages and RAM speed/timings, temps under burn-in? I looked up the memory low gap setting and it has solved the issue for some on x58 boards but mine does not have this option. Looks like I will be sending the second card back if I can't solve this and maybe just save the $$$.

My simple OC got me thinking and I decided to double check my voltages with my fluke. Much to my surprise my RAM was set to 1.25v(spec for these lp) but measured was only 1.167v! Doing some fine tuning and will test again with both cards in.

yes.. but the 980 Ti is a single card, so it wouldn't be having to talk etc to both cards unlike the 950 does thus removing any issues it could be with the SLI being to much for the puny 950 to handle. slayer_27 My simple OC got me thinking and I decided to double check my voltages with my fluke. Entirely depends on what you're using the see it's voltage. GPUZ/CPUZ Seem to have a bug with reading correct voltages.

Yes, but the puny 950 will still have to handle the immense power of the 980 Ti which can be more than 2 970s. If it doesn't have enough power (99% CPU usage) to push 2 970s, why would it have enough to handle a 980 Ti? Sure going to a single card might help a little, but he is still going to have the problem of the CPU bottleneck. The 950 might not be enough to handle that much pixel horsepower like you said in your first post (which would still hold true for the 980 TI since it has more pixel horsepower than 2 970s).

I think you guys are missing the issue. I used my fluke voltmeter to read the voltages (stated above). I'm confident that my cpu usage maxing at login with 2 cards at idle has nothing to do with being puny. Don't bother posting speculation based on guessing because hardware is old and please actually read the previous posts thoroughly.

Yeah, I don't think your CPU is actually bottlenecking two 970s. I have 2 of the exact same GPUs as you (970 FTW+s) and am running them on an i7 3820 @4.3GHz. My CPU doesn't come close to being topped out and mine isn't that much better than yours. Have you tried upping the voltage to get them measuring the correct voltage? And if you have and are measuring the correct voltage now, has that helped at all?

x58 has 32 lanes irc, something else is wrong. Cant be a cpu issue. Voltage problem could be a rail issue in the psu or a faulty vrm. I would measure amp/voltage pull from the wall.

My ups is telling me 396w from the wall while running p95 and 117v. No change, it looks like whatever that memory low gap setting is What I need but don't have. Just my luck. I guess I can just step up to the 980 or see if newegg will let me send it back. And apparently my original card does not support CUDA and has a 1417 boost opposed to my new (exact model match) card with CUDA and only 1367 boost clock?

i know exactly what you mean. I pushed my 750i ftw to the limit lol I would scour the internet to see if its replicated anywhere. Im trying to think how adding a card would cap the load on that board i cant see how. That 7666 is a great board. I feel like it could be like the pcie lane is running at incorrect speed maybe. Maybe reflash bios maybe its messed up. Did you boot into safe mode see if it happens there?

I have looked online and found others with this issue. Sadly none have the 7666 bit were all x58 and changing that setting as the evga tech said solved it instantly. If a 980ti can hold me over for 2 more years I can sell my other 970 to cover most of the cost at least.

Low gap memory setting adjusts the ram address extensions for the pcie slots. There has to be a way to change it in windows. it could be in the registry somewhere.

Crazy, but if you wanna avoid the headaches, just step it up like you said. Someone will buy the 970 no problem. Have you tried to call MSI , last ditch. Prolly gonna say blah blah we dont mess with x58 anymore, but its worth a shot.
