Hi, I recently swapped out my EVGA 650W for a 850W PSU. The 850 fan seems to be running loud and I am assuming at full speed on idle. Actually it's the loudest part within my new build, though I have 1 rear, 1 top and 4 push/pull fan config on the go.

It's not annoyingly loud but noticeable. My previous 650W ran quietly.

I know I have the eco mode option but I prefer regular airflow at lower RPMs. Is there anyway I can reduce the fan speed or set a curve? Or could this be a faulty PSU?

The fan should not be audible even under load. Have you done the paper clip test or perhaps used the detection tool included with the unit to isolate the PSU from the rest of the system?

Can you provide more details about the 2 tests. I haven't tried these.

The detection tool you speak of, is this the black connector with no cables attached which came with the PSU? If yes, please provide the necessary steps to run this test.

BTW, the fan noise, in last 4/5 days since installation, has become a little less audible though still louder than my case and rad fans which are set on 'silent mode'.

    Paper clip test: http://cdn.overclock.net/a/ad/500x1000px-LL-ad9e1227_atx-connector-20-24pin.jpeg
This will power the fan inside the unit.

Start by having the PSU plugged to a working wall socket, connect the paper clip or detection tool to the end of the 24-pin cable and then flip the switch to on and be sure "Eco Mode" is set to off

The detection tool is basically the same thing it just makes it easier to troubleshoot the unit.

Should I disconnect all other cables (VGA, SATA, PERIF, CPU, etc) before running this test?

Just wanted to chime in to say I'm getting similar problems with my 850W Supernova G3. It's the loudest part of my build. With eco mode off, it's generally louder than anything else in my system at idle or under load (and the 850W was pretty overkill for my i7-2600/1050ti build). With Eco mode on, it'll be dead silent for 10 minutes, then be extremely noisy for a long time.

I'm pretty disappointed with the product. I have no trouble with it performance wise, but the fan noise (or maybe it's just a fan curve problem) kinda ruins it for me. I thought I was making a good move paying a little extra for a higher tier product but it seems I was wrong. It seems we're not alone in this either, as seen here: forums.evga.com / G3-fan-noise-m2631908.aspx

If EVGA can provide a way to adjust the fan curve I'd be very happy. I don't know if that is even possible though so hopefully we can find a fix.

I still haven't got around to isolating the PSU yet. I noticed the fan sound became a little less audible after a few days so I thought i'd roll with it for a while and see if things got better over time. Unfortunately, no luck! It does sound as if its running on max speed or near about. Not that i know what i'm doing, i did try booting up in Windows safe mode to eliminate all foreign app processes which had no effect (not sure what that was supposed to do anyway lol).

Definitely gonna try the detection tool isolation test this weekend and will post up.

Hey neetdev, i don't think it's possible at all to adjust the curve. I endlessly searched online for the same fan-curve solution as I had initially assumed the fan was running at max speeds at all times. unfortunately, nothing came up! I don't think any manufacturer issues software supported PSU devices but it would be nice if they did or in the least like the eco switch, offered some sort of switch based speed controller system.

    Ran the detection tool test.

    Results: same problem

Sorry its a poor quality video when it comes to the sound, my NOTE 4 for some reason records with a romantic soft whistling sound. You can skip the first 10 secs, the PSU was powered up 12 seconds in. RMA? I'm out of the 30 day period since the purchase with Amazon, if this needs to RMA'd where do i need to go to contact EVGA (uk)?

I got a 1000w EVGA G2 sitting around doing nothing because I also felt the fan was stupid loud for what it was doing. Went to a 1000w Season Prime Titanium which is completly silent. Fan doesn't spin up till it reaches a certain temp, and even then, it is a lot quieter than what my EVGA was at. The loudest part of the Seasonic, is when it does spin up, it ramps up super quick, then instantly goes to the speed it needs. Computer sitting idle, or lite games that don't generate a lot of heat, the fan never spins.

    Sounds fine to me.

Did you have your volume turned up? PSU and Fan were powered up after 12 secs of recording. My note 4 phones audio recording is a little on the weak side and you may need to ramp up your speakers.

I have the same supernova G2 PSU in 650w which was replaced with the 850w. Today I ran the detection tool test on the 650 one too and it runs 'super' silent. The 850w, on idle, sounds louder then my 6 case fans whether set on silent or performance mode.

Maybe this will give you a better picture compared to my old phone recording. My 1080 ti fans can speed up to around 60% or more whilst playing BF1, these fans are audible as expected. The PSU fan pretty much sounds similar at those GPU RPM speeds. To be certain, I played around with the fan speed slider in Precision XOC to get a better sound comparison. When the GPU fan is set around 53% (1964 RPM) i was able to match the PSU fan noise. Anything above 57%, surpasses the PSU fan noise. I didn't have this problem at all with the 650w unit but the 850w sounds like a jet engine at a distance.

I hope someone can direct me to EVGA support for a replacement, preferably their UK branch.

Oddly enough, mine works great when set on ECO mode. Problem is, regardless whether its super safe or not, i don't like the idea of having the fan turned off at low temps. I prefer everything running cooler from the get go and the idea of heat being generated and not thrown out of my case doesn't sit well with me. It's just one of those weird self-imposed mysteries we can't shake off.

    I noticed a second problem:

When not set on ECO mode, my OS sleep settings don't work? I didn't realise this before as I've using eco mode. To make certain, I turned off wifi last night, all apps closed, switched off eco mode and left the PC for the duration of the time set in power settings to activate sleep mode. It didn't work. Did the same again with the Eco Mode turned on and it worked. So basically, without ECO mode my PSU runs 24/7 at possibly max fan speed too.

Hope someone can shed some light on this?

Econ mode OFF will just follow whatever curve is in there.

Sorry, I don't have an answer for you.
You may want to start your own thread for this issue so it will draw attention.

I recently installed the 1600W T2. I normally would not use Eco mode but when I turned it off and my system was running cool so the numerous other fans were quiet the psu made a lot of irritating noise. It seemed that it was running at too high of a speed for low load. But, unfortunately, it is typical noise of a ball bearing fan. That's why I normally avoid them. I look for fluid dynamic bearings or mag-lev (for case fans). If this was an FDB fan Eco mode would stay off.

In this case I'm using the Eco mode because when I'm gaming and the psu is under heavier load all the other fans (7 case fans, 3 aio, and 3 gpu) drown out the psu fan.
That is my solution to this noise problem. Good luck.

I'm curious to see how others respond to your question.

Frank, thanks for the fast feedback.  I just got a 220-PP-1600-X1...

Agree on noise.  I don't mind the noise at load but I do mind the noise at idle.  Having the PSU cranking all the time seems very unusual.  The system is completely silent at idle except for the PSU fan.  I'm starting a timer to see how long it takes to go from Eco silent to eco loud.

Eco mode ON will make it "silent" until the PSU gets hot then its back to 100%.
Econ mode OFF will just follow whatever curve is in there.

What did you end up doing?

I got a replacement which resolved the issue. Definitely a bad PSU. I recall someone suggesting this was a common problem with some of the earlier G2 production batches which was resolved.

The replacement is way quieter at idle but its still partially audible which i recall other G2 owners suggesting its normal. I just prefer a super quiet idling profile hence I did try running high power consuming stress tests for long periods of time with the idea of pushing the fan to find its silky smooth sweet spot... didn't make much of a difference. I guess its fair to say G2's are fantastic PSUs... but could be a little better in the audible department. I ended up turning on Eco-Mode... it forces "silence" in idle conditions.
