Just watched the tear down of the 1080ti FTW3 on Gamer Nexus, and I was wondering is the shroud on all of the EVGA 1080ti models plastic or metal with a paint coating on top? If this question was asked before forgive me, but I wasn't able to find a definitive answer while searching the web.

If I remember correctly, it is plastic. In fact, one of the questions being asked about Elite cards was if those would have the shroud made of metal instead.

I believe I read that it is a aluminum shroud on one of the ftw3 reviews.

I couldn't seem to find a definitive answer either. I've been curious myself about the elite.

The hybrid shrouds are plastic and the FE cards are metal. Not sure about the rest of the lineup.

I’m thinking it’s probably made of plastic rather than aluminum. Here’s why: -- Plastic is easier and cheaper to mold into various shapes than aluminum. -- Plastic is up to approximately ½ the weight of aluminum. -- Plastic is not a good conductor of electricity whereas aluminum is. The shroud of a GPU most likely does not need to conduct electricity. -- Aluminum is stronger than plastic, but the fan shroud doesn’t need to be overly strong. -- Aluminum dissipates heat much quicker than plastic. This is certainly a plus for aluminum. -- Aluminum is much easier to recycle than plastic, but this may have little bearing on selection of one or more materials used in the manufacture of a GPU. However, plastic can be manufactured in a color of choice. Since EVGATech_JeffP says above that the shroud is painted, this may change things a bit. It would seem to me that it would be cheaper to mold an item 'in color' rather than to 'shape' an item and then paint it. I'm going to assume the painting step gives the shroud a more 'professional' look as compared to a bare molded color item (I really have no idea though). That said, I think I'm going to stick with plastic as the material in question. I think cost of production and lighter weight win the argument. They've gone overboard on heat dissipation with other components of the GPU and may have found that using aluminum for this purpose produces no benefits. What do you think?

Well I have just installed a 1080ti SC2 and I am thinking it is plastic with a coated finish to make it look metal. The reason I think this is the fins on the heat sinks are cold to touch first think in the morning before I turn my system on (like my Phanteks Evolv TGE case), whereas the shroud feels more like room temperature (like my keyboard) and the texture feels more plastic like. These are just my observations and I could be wrong. Would be good if EVGA rep can confirm as I too would like to know. Perhaps for the FTW3 version it is different.

It looked like Aluminium for me. Especially considering this is quite premium card.
But can't be sure. Can someone with FTW3 elaborate?

TinyTomLogan has done a review of the EVGA GTX 1080 Ti SC2. At about the 38:50 minute mark he’s holding the card in his left hand, points to the top of the shroud and in part says, “This plastic…” while discussing the possibility of painting the shroud yourself as opposed to buying an elite version. (He actually says, “this plastic” twice in the few sentences devoted to painting the shroud.) He obviously feels the shroud is made of plastic.
Here’s the video:

Yes on the standard card it is plastic, however, it does not feel "plasticy" as it is secured quite well with very little flex.

Is this a breadcrumb? Are the shrouds on the elite, metal?

I think if we keep asking they might end up using gold and diamonds.

I'm in the it's plastic crowd, and am fine with that in this case. It looks good, and has a nice finish that gives the feeling it could be painted. It will also weigh less which could help with things like card sag.

So you're saying the elite models are metal?
