Has anyone heard anything on this? It was supposed to be released 4th quarter this year but with the times it’s looking unlikely. The hours I played this game on DSL would bring happiness to be that no new game can recreate.

Anyone else have fond memories of playing online and doing runs?

I've tried both diablo 1 and 2 recently..and while I loved them when they were new...they're a bore fest now..to me anyway ;)

It’s more for the nostalgia than the gameplay. If you don’t have fond memories of it prior I don’t see you enjoying it now.

It was the best of the series so far.  Loved the game play.  3 did not capture what 2 did.  I like remasters as sometimes simpler is better.  Things keep getting so complex.  They can add the features, but should they.  Found memories of this game and the game play.  I find myself thinking so much about what you need to than just playing the game.  Soon we will need two people to play something that a mouse did years ago.  There is a tipping point.

Ya D3 really didn’t do it for me. D2 was the shining jewel. Hopefully D4 would bring some magic with it to bring back some great gameplay.

I forgot about the D2 remaster. Strange we've heard nothing about it. I liked D3, but i'm glad D4 looks like it's going back to their roots a bit.

After the WC3 Reforged fiasco, I don't think I'd trust Blizzard to do a Diablo 2 remaster justice. For all their faults, EA did Command and Conquer right by going back to the original developers and source for that remaster. So far, Blizzard hasn't shown any effort to do that.

I still spend 30-60 minutes 5 days a week putzing around on my PlugY account.

My main concern regarding a D2 remaster is that David Brevik has stated numerous times that there are a number of lost assets that can not and will not ever be recovered.  I don't have a ton of faith in a quality rebuild from scratch.

How does that work?  Like if you have the original Diablo 2 and your company owns it, don't you still have all of it?

Heck yes.   We were a Ultima Online guild waiting for its release and were playing Diablo day and night together to keep us patient.   1997ish?

Here are the Schaefer's discussing it from a 2019 Gamespot article.  I have seen a nyumber of different interviews/discussions with David Brevik (who sorted Diablo 1 out from a turn based to action rpg in the course of a weekend) who also discusses this, the most recent involved him basically saying "good luck".

There was one story in particular that sounds like a developer's nightmare. Erich and Max Schaefer recalled that in the 11th hour of Diablo II's development, the entire backup of the game's source code and assets was lost. "Not just our code, but all of our assets. Irrevocably, fatally corrupted," Max Schaefer said.
His brother Erich added, "It's all gone. We were supposed to have a backup but neglected it. We spent a day or two in sheer panic."
The team at Blizzard North was thankfully able to reconstruct a lot of the code and assets from the version of Diablo II that developers took home to play. However, the root code and assets were apparently lost, which means Blizzard would have a tough time making a Diablo II Remaster today.
"[We] finally rebuilt a lot of it through what people had at their homes," Erich Schaefer said. "I had a big chunk of it. Went home, pulled out the hard drive or whatever we did back then. Spent a few days reconstructing it, which ended up working fine, except that we lost all the history. We lost a lot of the assets, art assets. It would make it very difficult for Blizzard to do a Diablo 2 remaster because all the assets we used are pretty much gone. They'd have to make them from scratch."

I saw a video of someone, may have been Brevik, remarking that assets had been lost. It's shocking that they could have lost the source code, but if they were able to make a releasable build from what they reconstructed, then I'm not sure what they actually lost that would prevent a rewrite. Maybe high resolution artwork assets?

Actually, that is the video I mentioned. I guess I should've watched more of it.
