I do understand that it gets a little air in the lower fan from the upper dust ring on the filter. I guess I will just trim on the front cover and install a a custom dust filter. Thanks

That is what some owners have done.

Re: DG8 design flaw, lower third fan totally blocked by front/right cover. 2017/09/15 11:46:04 (permalink)
So, I got to thinking about trying a few things last night with the front cover. I first ran 3 XIU stress tests for about an hour on all 3 situations. I will try and get some screenshots later of them,

1. Cover on, loop stayed constant about 58ish degrees
2. Cover on with filter removed, loop stayed about 58ish degrees again
3. Cover off, loop stayed right at 55 degrees

So, I thought I would try a very simple visual test with removal of the pull fans and attachment of small pieces of paper in place of the fans right outside of the "dead zone". With the cover on, with filter or not the paper would just barely lift even when the fans were turned up to about 1300 rpms.

Now, I removed the cover and at about 900 rpms the paper on each is literally almost standing straight out. That is with 3 Noctua 2000pwm on push from the front.

So, yes the front cover is a design flaw in that it is limiting the amount of air entering the front of the case. The bottom 140mm fan is practically useless with the cover on. I know several cases run like this and so on and so forth, but I do like to try to back up my assumptions with some sort of tests. So, take that how it is :)

Do any of the other DG owners with this problem have any possible screenshots of what they have done to remedy this before I go measuring and cutting on my front cover?

Either way, I love the case and EVGA products so I am not trying to bash anything just trying to understand why certain things were done the way they were. I am no engineer by the way :)

Thanks again

I drilled some holes in it, got some screen from home depot (for a dust filter) and glued it on the inside, if you position the holes nicely it looks ok.

Has anyone got the software that controls the fans and such for the case to work?

If the fan can't pull any air it will overspeed and actually contribute heat to the system BTW.....
I unplugged mine until I drilled the holes in the side for it.

If I remember correctly, the included fans were not PWM controlled and the only "control" was the K button to make them full speed. I used Corsair Commander Mini and HD RGB fans in mine so I never used them.

It wouldn't let me post the youtube link but there is a guy has it controlling his fans

Search this on youtube:    EVGA DG-87 DG TUNER

If the controller on the case can do it, then the software can do it, the problem is how does the DG tuner talk to it?  Must be a link through the case leads that go to the USB inputs on a motherboard, I've looked all over for a cable I missed but can't find it.
When I try to launch DG tuner all I get is "can't find USB HID device"
I don't see any driver that was installed when DG Tuner was setup like you get with the flow control program.
Gonna have to call tech support on Monday.
