Fin looking to build that Custom Ergonomic Desk Build:
Would anyone be willing to share their desk and office pictures?  Im in the myst of designing a dual desk that the wife and I can share and work and play together but still have our own space ish, heavy on the ish...  ATM, Im thinking a longer L-shape corner desk.

The desk,
Ergonomic sitting, proper keyboard & mouse placements, proper monitor placement & feet placements.
Better Lighting, Indirect Lighting.
Simple build, nothing crazy.......

Feedback is welcome,
Knight'

EDIT: You'd be surprised on how unergonomic your desk setup really is....

I used an old kitchen work top and fixed it to the wall for monitors and rig and use a desk underneath for keyboard and mouse

    Hippie got skills. 😼

Those who abuse power, are nothing but scumbags! The challenge of power is how to use it and not abuse it. The abuse of power that seems to create the most unhappiness is when a person uses personal power to get ahead without regards to the welfare of others, people are obsessed with it. You can take a nice person and turn them into a slob, into an insane being, craving power, destroying anything that stands in their way.

Re: Custom Ergonomic Desk Build 2020/01/25 15:00:49 (permalink)
I built my own desk... Mostly out of necessity; The majority of desks that are sold in the Unites States are set to a height of 29 inches which is far too high for most people and I wanted a larger desk than the ones that you can buy. Before building your desk it is critical that you first get your PC chair and than build the desk around that chair. When it comes to desk ergonomics there are plenty of resources online, but at a basic level you are going to want to stick to the following. One, your elbows should form a 90 degree angle when resting your arms on the arm rests. Two, when standing with your knees facing the front lip of the chair the chair should be just below your knee caps. Three, The arms of the chair should be even with the surface of the desk or if you are using a keyboard/mouse tray they should be even with it. Stick to these three rules and you are going to be able to sit at your desk for hours in complete comfort.

I hand built my desk out of combination of pine and red oak. The top of the desk is 72L x 32W x 3/4H inches and was built from two pieces of pine that were joined together with wood glue. I than outlined the surface with 1.5W x 3/4H pine to give the appearance that the surface of the desk was 1.5 inches thick. The frame of the desk was built out of red oak of various sizes depending on structural need with the legs being 2.5L x 2.5W x 2.5H red oak as well. Once again where needed for structural rigidity and strength I used some metal brackets that I painted black. I sanded all surfaces of the desk, stained the pine top black, stained the oak a gray color, applied multiple coats of polyurethane to the pine top, and than applied a wipe on poly to the oak frame.

In total it took me a little over a month to build my desk... while you dont have to follow the same process that I did dont be afraid to get creative, for example old solid core doors can make for a great desk surface! The one thing that I would try and stick to though is the advice regarding the ergonomics listed above having a desk that fits you correctly makes a huge difference in comfort.

Here is a photo of my desk shortly after I had completed it... not the greatest photo, but you get the idea, https://imgur.com/a/qtQpUbJ

Re: Custom Ergonomic Desk Build 2020/01/25 23:12:34 (permalink)
thing is with building a desk, a few things other than room size and the size of desk you want..
Things you need to look at are:
    Permanent, modular, cabinet style, flat
with that there also this :
Rent apartment or own home ..
with a rental it kinda limits you to the build you want, you cant build to were the desk is screwed in to the wall - style of wood you can use is sometimes a factor, due to landlord, its dumb but some landlords can be that way..

then comes room size and style of desk..
if you own the home you can mount the desk top to the wall making it a permanent fixture and just add legs to the front with bracing mounted to the wall .

A rental apartment, you can build a modular desk, meaning you can move it around from spot to spot.. with a room size of 5x7 you kinda limited to a desk top of 4.5 feet, but depending on how you want the desk to run with the room, along the short wall or along the long wall is the factor.,., long wall size 6 feet to 6 1/2 feet .. width from wall to you again limited normal desk width is around 32" some might be right at 36" ..  Height normal size around 30/32" from floor to top of desk..  you can make a modular desk meaning the break point is half  that can be split in to two desks.. with adding another set of legs for the half desk that is left and removing the leg set to make a long desk..
corner desk type, putt thing break point at the corner, easily done.  just dont cut the wood to fit the corner, leaving it in a long run to a short run. { L }with 8 legs sliding one top to the corner and the other butted up to it ..

I know my way around the shop Ghost, and just like real life, nothing is ever permanent. Of course not all of us are taught or learn how to think 3rd&4th dimensionally...

Knightviper, Im not allowed to bolt or screw anything into our walls here. But I am keeping the build simple and clean.

JTXJack, Ever thought about just doing a standup desk, and just getting a drafting style stool desk chair?

Nereus, Total layout, two separate work areas with own mouse/keyboard & monitor, the ISP Modem, Brother compact laser wifi printer, phones and one ipdad.

Jasoncodispoti, super nice and clean work. Waterbased or oil based poly for your clearcoat? Been thinking about just using Cottonseed oil with the allergies and all?

Ghost, If I do, do a L-shape, it would be two separate pieces making moving easier, and give the wife and I the different desk heights we both need.

You can build a custom desk from the wall to the edge of the doorway.

You can bolt it into 3 studs on the back wall and into 2 studs on the side wall, Then on the doorway side, just throw a 45* support.

You'll have a sturdy "free floating" desk. It's how I made mine, but if I did it again, I'd use different material instead of plywood and 2x4's.

Edit: Scratch this, I just read further down. Ignore this.

Thanks. Oil based poly, the wipe on poly was a homemade brew 50% poly and 50% mineral spirits. If I remember correctly I did around 5 coats of poly on the table top sanding between each layer with a very fine sand paper, than I did a 6th and final coat. This took the majority of the time required to build the desk as I had to wait for each coat of poly to dry for 24 hours before sanding and applying the next. The wipe on poly was substantially easier to apply, but at the cost of less protection. I believe that I did 3 coats of the wipe on poly with very little sanding between each coat. The end result was great! However it was a ton of work (the table top portion)... if I did it again I think that I would experiment with something like 80% poly 20% mineral spirits for the entire desk, not sure that would work or not.

Knight, if you want the standing height option, the link that GTXJack gave sell the frame separate. You could make your own top. Several good ideas posted already. I like the 30 depth on the listing he posted. a lot of desks are 24 deep. ENjoy the build!

It's real easy to add any size keyboard tray underneath. Just need the roller brackets.

I'm going to build myself a desk too...... but I am going to admit my limitations & keep it fairly simple.

Get the rectangle dimensions & height  proper for me - put a shelf for a footrest ..call it a day.

Then maybe add on/ mod it  little by little , if time and desire allows it.

Anyone recommend a opensource/or cheap 3D Cad?  Sketchup is online only and performs like cow crap.

Anyone used cottonseed(Linseed) oil or beewax? Looking for a sealant thats not harsh.

Hey buddy! Thanks for linking me to your build...see...great minds think alike! You wanted to build a desk and so did I!

The easiest and most low cost was for me was to design the desk at 24 inches deep by a maximum of what ever depth or length you want to make it. If using MDF I just purchase a 4 x 8 foot board at home depot and have them cut it in half to make two 2 x 8 sections or cut it again to make 2 x 4 sections. If using acrylic the largest it ships in is 2 x 4 foot (without costing an arm and a leg) and i just use that without using the laser to cut anything...it already comes in the size you need! So say you purchase two 2x4 pieces for the right and left ends, then a 2 x 2 piece for the middle of an L-Shaped desk your all set! No cutting needed! Just build the frame and attach the panels with t-slot screws!

Here are some sketchup designs you may like. Let me know if you want me to e-mail the skp. files to you to fiddle around with. Also, for the frame, use 8020 extrusions in the 2525 size. You can find them here on Ebay or Amazon

Granted you don't need the case designed into the desk, but if your just looking to build a desk just remove the case from the drawing. The designs are 3/8" clear acrylic with either a 1/8" or 1/4" top. This way you can mount RGB lighting on the back side of the desk and edges will glow!
