I was thinking of making a flyer to place locally for computer repair stuff, you know virus cleaning etc. I was just wondering what prices i should set and what should be on the flyer? There are no computer places near me except bestbuy and a relatively unknown place thats about half an hour away. So i thought a flyer in town might get me some extra money while i look for a job or even while im working. I saw a thread like this a while back but i couldnt find it again.

Prices i need to set for things:
Virus Cleaning/PC speed up (Basically just running Ccleaner)/Defrags
^ All under a single price. As in ill do all of that for one price. I was thinking $20?

Custom built Computers- I was thinking $50 + Cost of components.

Is there anything else im missing here? I guess component installations for parts they buy elsewhere. Those are the only 3 things i can really think of an average person needing. Is there anything else i should add or revise?

Any help would be appreciated. And a template for the flyer would also be nice. Publisher im sure has some but any creative ideas might be cool.

$20 to clean a pc? That's way too low. Charge em by the hour, not per job. You could get on a slow old clunker and be there for hours.

$50 min to show, that covers one hour, then $40 per hour after that.

$40 per hour after a $50 show fee? Sounds a lot to me. And i dont think many people would pay that. Im trying to find a nice price thats cheaper than bestbuy and gives that local touch. haha. Hourly is fine but i wouldnt do 40 an hour. i dont want to gouge these people. Maybe $20 show fee, and $15 an hour?

I didnt look at their prices. I was about to do that when i saw your post. Those prices is what i usually do for family since im kind of obliged to help them for literally nothing.

Half of bestbuys geek squad prices are like $150 for an in home diagnostic. lol. Would you be able to say on your flyer that its half of geek squads prices or is there a copyright issue there.

So, half of their prices would be what Kram said. $50 diagnostic, and then nearly 150 to repair it. So 40 an hour would be cheaper than half. Im sorry i doubted you kram. I cant believe bestbuy charges that much...The hook then would be to say i charge half of what bestbuy does, but can i say that on a flyer?

Annoying isnt it. (not parents or siblings but cousins, aunts and uncles etc).
But do you think people pay $50 for a show up fee? lol. And can i say its half of bestbuys prices? I didnt mean to copy your prices or whatever, i just wanted an idea of what someone else who does this would charge.
I read that wrong. i thought you meant not what i charge.

That would still be cheaper then Best Buy Geek Squad prices if you got it done in two hours.

Don't wory about coping my prices... It takes a nimum of 3 hours to redo a pc and that depends on the pc!!! So 150.00 is a bargin.

Yeah, i guess it is. Thanks for all the help. I think i have all the pricing stuff down. Any tips for doing certain tasks?

Virus Cleaning- Spybot Search and Destroy, Malware Bytes (AVG or Microsoft security essentials as well, AVG usually pops up with false positives so that might make it look better since something pops up.)

PC Speed ups/Registry (lol, is there a technical name for that?)-Ccleaner, Aug. defrag

Data Recovery (I hate doing this, but oh well)-Recuva

Data Transfers (Ive never really needed to do this before. Is it difficult? And should i bring an external HDD, what would be helpful? Programs or hardware)

Network setup/repair- Easy stuff, basically just find drivers, and update them, reset routers and make new passwords.

    Component Installations-self explanatory and easy.

And for macs, is there a different protocol to any of this? Most of these programs have Mac versions so they should work fine.

Other than those, all i need to do is design a flyer. Templates on Publisher are not very good. This will probably take the most time.

An infected OS cannot be trusted, so boot to a LiveCD to do your cleanup work - I use UBCD4Win - www.ubcd4win.org.
AVG has, IMHO, gone downhill since v8.  Avira, which scores pretty well, is on the UBCD4Win disk by default.

    Data recovery - TestDisk

Data transfers - absolutely bring a LARGE external hard drive.
Also bring a spare computer/laptop, IDE & SATA external drive enclosures and a few screwdrivers.

Network setup - make up a sheet so customers have documentation on what all their usernames, passwords, IP addresses, etc are.

If you dont have Mac experience, do not offer services for them.  Get a Mac yourself and practice.

I used to do a lot of computer repair jobs - let me know if you want me to post my full list of fix-it hardware I'd bring.

Same. My family messes up their computers so much I tell 'em you pay me or take it to a shop. Except last month where my dad fried his 3rd computer in like 5 years.

I charge 20.00 to diagnose which can be waived if problem is known, 40.00 an hour monitored.  If I can step away while an OS install I usually just charge the hour.  Plus components. So I make 40.00 no matter what I do.

Sounds good. But the $50 diagnostic fee covers the first hour. So thats similar to what you do its just you charge 40 right off the bat with a 20 diagnostic fee while mine is included.

Its a good strategy though, mine only gets you $10 more. haha. Any input is much appreciated nonetheless.

Right now im trying to design a flyer that doesnt look bland as can be. And...its very difficult to make it as good as i want it to be.

Does anyone have ideas towards what the basic template should be for the flyer? Right now mine is very basic. Ill upload a pic of it later. But it basically just says computer repair on the top, has prices and services sections.

Most pc repairs take me like 15 minutes.  I removed one of those fake av off my sisters bf's computer in like 3 minutes and was like whatever you want to pay me. 20.00 for 3 minutes, nice.   You should make it like a band flyer catches attention.

Edited repost of a PM sent to kidcrumb:

    kidcrumb,

Not a problem.  My base toolkit comprised of the following:
Laptop, USB Optical Drive, external drive enclosure(s)/dock for 2.5" & 3.5" drives (for example only, I dont use this one), precision screwdriver set, a few "regular"-size screwdrivers (Phillips and Flathead #2 & #3), a digital multimeter, a pack of canned air, disinfectant wipes, external hard drive (size depends on how many computer jobs you do, but TB drives are pretty cheap now), USB memory stick, an Ultimate Boot CD (hardware test disk from http://www.ultimatebootcd.com), and a UBCD4Win disk that is built <3 months ago.
If you feel it neccessary, either a anti-static mat or wristband.

On top of my base kit, I'd ask the user a few questions before-hand:
Laptop or Desktop?, If made by a company; manufacturer and model number?, If they cant give manufacturer or model number; Age (Rough estimate is ok) and price paid at purchase?, Description of problem(s)?, and Anything the user thinks is important?
Those questions determine if and what type of spare parts I bring such as a monitor, RAM (SD, RD, DDR, DDR2), HDDs, CPU, GPU, a test PSU, keyboard & mouse, networking equipment, etc.
The point of my kit was to bring everything I might need, so I dont have to take the computer or make a second trip.  It all pretty much fit in 2 laptop bags.

The Mac is honestly a whole different beast.  You'd better hold off on Mac services until you get a better handle on it.  They can be a PITA and I started my computer experience on Mac (OS7).  The boot disk wont work on Macs, I think.  Maybe the new Macs (Intel, post 2006), but definitely not the old ones.

Transfers are data only, you cant typically transfer programs.  A full backup would be a whole disk image; UBCD4Win has a disk imager.  There are others too - Acronis, Ghost, Paragon, etc.  It stores the complete state of the OS - great for recovery but bad because any problems will stay.  It also takes a few hours.

Working in Safe Mode on an infected computer still runs the risk of the infection hiding from whatever tools you use, plus a few of the programs I use wont install in Safe Mode and the infection prevents them from installing in regular mode, so you kinda end up with a dillema.  Booting to a LiveCD like UBCD4Win bypasses any protections the infection may have put up to prevent removal and I've found makes cleanup easier.  I can  do pretty much anything I want to the disk and since I didnt boot from it, none of the files are locked.
To reformat the OS, I'd basically have to declare the OS unsalvageable and inform the user.  They'd be given the option of me backing up anything important for them.  I had an OEM copy of WinXP and used it for the install media if the user didnt have a Restore Disk.  (I have not dealt with any Vista or 7 reformats yet.)  I would use the XP key on the sticker attached to the machine to sidestep any piracy issues.

I searched for a few flyers, but some of those seem really well done, maybe done in photoshop or with original artwork. All im using is publisher.

At least its better than this one:

lol. But it does have a kind of....simple and straight forward approach to it.

Haha, you could get up with one one of the photoshoppers on here they can throw you something together, just make a thread with your info they should jump on it.   May have to email them your personal details though I wouldn't port that.

You can download a 30 day trial of Photoshop from the Adobe website, or at least you could back with CS2.

I'd be interested in seeing your flyer and at least giving some feedback.  I'm no designer by any means but I'd like to think I have a fairly good eye.

I've done IT for a living for the past 3 years, Windows, Macs, and Linux.  While I have an entire office stocked of random parts if I had to make a list of the most common I'd say:
    1. RAM (DDR2, DDR3 because that's what our machine standards are).  DDR2 800 and DDR3 1333 should work in anything.
    2. Thermal paste
    3. Spare fan
    4. Spare DVD/RW drive
    5. Spare PSU
    6. PSU tester (I have a cheap POS but it's quick to use and also a Fluke multimeter); sometimes easier than replacing the PSU to test it.
    7. Network tester.  I've used dumb ones and smart ones, the smart ones are amazing and quickly worth their price.  Our Fluke will tell you which side the continuity break is closer to and will also approximate cable length.  You can also find cable terminations in a wiring closet and patch panel.
    8. Crossover cable (1ft) and a cable barrel so you can hook up 2 computers directly.
    9. RS232 to USB because I'm a sysadmin
    10. USB cable (B to A and an A extension), ethernet cable (7', 15' work for most cases)
    11. A hard drive dock similar to the one posted.  I have the thermaltake branded one with ESata and USB for like $30.
    12. 2.5" IDE to 3.5" converter and also a IDE to USB dongle (My dock doesn't have the IDE connector in the newegg link referenced above)
    13. Spare hard drive for use in said dock.
    14. Ghost or some other imaging software. You could theoretically create an image of a Windows XP OEM machine and then image drives from your external.  Start with a "factory" sealed image from sysprep and then enter in their CD key since it will prompt you to activate.  Add in any drivers afterwards.  If it fails to take you can always just install manually.  With ESata it takes just over 3 minutes to restore a drive image.
    15. Something with internet connectivity to get drivers because Windows XP never has them and you can never count on people to have the disks.
    16. A linux LiveCD like Fedora or Knoppix or Backtrack.
    17. UBCD4WIN unless you custom roll Knoppix or something to have an antivirus that you can update easily.  I generally hook infected hard drives up to a private network and run virus scanning stuff on them.  I also run virus checks on the hard drives through the USB dock with a laptop.  The laptop I can reimage in 5 minutes if it gets hinky.

    System Profile:
