I'm glad you made this thread; I'm actually looking at doing the same thing for some extra money. If you live in small town, consider putting an ad in your local newspaper. For you guys that are already repairing computers, can you PM me a full pricing list?

An hourly wage is pretty much the only price. Ive decided to do that anyway. If im only there for half an hour then i still make $50. Thanks for that list. It covers a lot of info. Ill try to get my Fyler uploaded for you all to critique. I hope i wont need a PSU tester or network tester. I dont really plan on anything too extreme since its a small town i doubt anyone has a huge network setup but i might be wrong. Virus cleaning is what i expect to do the most of. lol.

Here is my flyer with name removed. As if that was a big deal anyway. But that is what i have so far. Im still working on the edges of it and such because it looks very plain. the colors are also not final. It still needs some text editing. As in text size, fonts etc. Organization can make it look 20 times better as well. I hate rough drafts. haha. I just discovered Shapes! Pow box (like in comic books) added behind the main title. Maybe i should give it an overall theme....

1) I like the layout. It's eye catching and has all the information I need to know before I call you. 2) It has some trust issues. Coming from the side of a client, it seems fly-by-night, I think mostly because of the clip-art. If you're young, I think it will pass, and I'm not familiar with your area so it could be fine otherwise (You said it was a small town, but if you were living in a big city I'm not sure I would call on one of these flyers unless it was posted up on my college bulletin board).

Thanks a bunch for the feedback. Ill try to change it. Im still working on the flyer to make it more...polished, fluid and not cut pasted like it is. Any ideas for what i could do to make it not look untrustworthy?

Not sure I fully understand why it's "untrustworthy". Maybe because I'm sick, and just not processing things very well today.

I can see that being not serious...its supposed to grab attention. lol. the childish look however looks a tad unprofessional. But it does look fun. Im trying to make it look like a person doing the repairs around the neighborhood. Not a company or business. Just a flyer similar to those youd see of a kid who is mowing lawns for extra money.

I do family for nothing as well....
I stop doing this awhile back... Everyone in my family was always bringing me something to work on or clean... I didn't have any me time so, I sent out a mass family e-mail state i wouldn't be doing it for free anymore... Funny haven't heard anything from any of them sense but, I have time to play now.. So in my book win win.. Don't have to deal with family and I have free time lol

go to best buy, office max, office depot, frys, electronics and any other local established computer repair shop and see what their prices, turn around time and warranty on services are. - Don't overwhelm yourself with work
- track and log all of your customers and their items (customer ID, invoice #, work order #, access database/label maker works wonders)
- You must be certain on prices and timing
- If you make in-home calls be sure to check what the federal compensation is per mile and use that as a basis
- have several external hard drives handy to backup customer data
- create a new subnet for your customers devices, do not connect them on the same network as your home devices
I guess number six is a bit much but that's what i did just to make sure i didnt get a worm

A few people i asked said they would be more willing to pay for a service like this if prices were flat rated. not hourly. What do you all think of this? and comment on the flyer itself. what can make it better?

I do a flat rate for a lot of my stuff. I have a hard time justifying to them hourly when they see me sitting twiddling my thumbs and eating their food . $50 - $75 - general/long but easy tasks $75 - $150 - rebuilds/degunks/etc $150+ - You screwed it up really bad/I told you not to do that and now I have to fix it again. Disclaimer: I do it for pocket change mostly, so prices are low and sometimes I barter/trade with the people. ~Fus

Thanks Fiius, I was deliberating that. Because if i say $40 an hour, a lot of people might not know how long it will take, so instead of calling to ask they just wont do it. But if isaid $60 for virus/malware/spyware and a $20 fee to go out there. I might get more customers and more money.
