So here's my best attempt at an apple-to-apples comparison using my own system. Hardware wise, nothing but the GPU has changed. Keep in mind the time difference and driver changes, but I didn't overclock anything beyond what evga sells. System specs are in my signature. Here it is based on the 3DMark Fire Strike test:

Titan X (Maxwell):

EVGA GTX 1080 SC:

Evga GTX 1080ti SC2:

*Validation warning for an unrecognized GPU, too new I guess.

So there it is, with Powerlink:

Processor: Intel i7-6700K
GPU: EVGA GTX 1080ti SC2 (11G-P4-6593-KR)
RAM: 16GB G.Skill DDR4-3000
Motherboard: Asus Z170 Ranger
SSD: 400GB Intel 750 Series
Power: EVGA 850w P2
Monitor: Acer X34 @100Hz G-Sync
OS: Windows 10 Home 64-bit

Was hoping to see much higher numbers to be honest, could you run it overclocked? While it's a nice progressive improvement, that's lower than i get with my current 980's, which is a tad off-putting given the cost.

I was getting that validation warning as well with my Strix 1080 ti, but then it just randomly went away so I'm not really sure what ended up fixing it.  My scores were in the high 20K range without overclock, but shot up to a little above 32K with overclock so you can probably boost that up by 10% or so.

what cpu and ram are you running man? all on the same os with only new vga drivers

I saw a little better scores with a 980ti than that titan x, my 1080 scores 19500 on average in firestrike standard, using a 7700k though at 4.7ghz and 3000mhz ddr4 on W10/C

i7-6700k and 3000mhz DDR4, all on Win10. I just got the card yesterday so I haven't played with overclocking yet, but seeing the different sensor temps, this thing stays cool with the default fan curve and there is definitely room for improvement. I wanted to do a default-to-default comparison test and that's what those graphs show.
