I called EVGA, they said as long as they are good quality extensions you should be fine.  They also added the number of failed cards is low and not to worry.  So that is what I am going to do.

If someone is concerned about aftermarket cables, you can always sleeve your OEM cables.   It's actually quite easy and cheap as long as your careful.  The Youtube channel Optimum Tech did a great video on the process.  I don't have enough posts to hyperlink yet, but just search youtube for Optimum Tech and Sleeving, and it will come up.   He probably makes the best small form factor content on Youtube as well.

Here's a discussion. Custom cables that aren't extensions, do they meet the same requirements as the OEM cables do? I know that my corsair RM1000i cables have capacitors soldered inside of the harnesses to filter out bad signaling. If you got a cablemod C-series black label to replace them, do they have the same capacitors?

Apparently this is important to avoid electrical issues.

Mod-one is another option. You have the option of a thicker gauge as well. Can't imagine your going to see any benefit of it, but it's an option.

Are we talking cable extensions? Or just straight up replacement cables?

For those interested, this person solved their random reboot problem by swapping to stock cables from cablemod ones for his 1000W seasonic prime titanium PSU (and his old 2080 Ti and 2080 Super worked fine with the cablemod cables):

The kinda crazy part is that it was a 3090 FE, which has a 370W max power draw with the power slider maxed out. So many folks out there with 3080 FTW3s with 420W stock or 450W XOC, and 3090 FTW3 owners with 450W stock and 500W XOC.

It might look bad, but if the wire size is smaller than the stock cables to make cable management easier - it's doing you no favors for stability with these higher wattage cards.

I'm running a Cable Mod kit on my Corsair RM850 currently. Zero issues on my 1080 Ti. Id even argue the Cable Mod kit is even nicer quality than the previous sleeved cable kit on bought directly from Corsair.
This is the first I've ever heard this about Cable Mod. Their products are typically top notch, and amazing customer service. I'll have my RTX 3080 is a couple days, I will report back if my card catches fire and melts my entire PC.

Could be a variety of things really, cable size, pin quality, connector quality.

Who knows, I have always stayed clear of them personally so I can't speak about them from 1st hand experience.

Could also be missing caps in the cables for PSU models that actually have caps in the OEM cables.

Like Corsair Type 4 as an example.

Well, I just ordered complete cable replacements, not extensions, that are long enough to fit my case, from Cablemod.  They are rated as compatible with my PSU and tech support at Phantek said they should work fine.  I am really just going to replace:  PCI and MB and get rid of the extensions from Asiahorse.  I will do the rest of the cables later when I do a rebuild with a new CPU and fans.

I did check mod-one out and that's my next option if this somehow is not compatible.

These extensions were a bad call on my part 7 months ago.. no idea what the hell I was thinking.  I should have just looked harder for longer custom cables.

And a few 100 bucks later its wasted time, should have done it right back then.

The only time Cablemod or other cables could be a issue with a quality PSU is if the Manufacture of the PSU has installed caps in the ends of the cables they include with the PSU. Some Manufactures do this to smooth out voltage ripple. So if you use different cables that do NOT have the caps in the cable ends, you could possibly be allowing excess voltage ripple to make it to your components. I currently have a EVGA G3 1000watt power supply, which I purchased EVGA mod cables when I bought it. It does NOT have caps on the original cables nor the mod cables. Some some thoughts on the issue some may be having with powering high end cards. As when the Amperage and wattage draw goes up so does the AC ripple on the power lines to the graphics card.

The best way is to tell CableMod to make 16AWG cable’s.

I have an RM850x with Cablemod cables. They work flawlessly, but they are designed for each specific PSU. You cannot swap them around with other PSU's. Also they have the capacitors Corsair puts in the stock cables to filter noise as well, so they are very nice replacements.

This is very important, my Cable Mod cable set was specifically for the Seasonic Prime Titanium 750 watt SSR-750TD. My theory is just go with the cables that came with your PSU or as in EVGA's case, optional cable sets that are specifically designed for your particular PSU. In no way am I saying Cable Mod cables are bad, it's just in my case two of the cables were. When your PC constantly shuts down and you change one thing, and one thing only and the problem stops then you've found out what the problem is.

This is in no way 100%, but based on my experience there is a chance aftermarket cables can damage your PSU or components.

It's a long story that spans many years, but to summarize:

  • Used the Cablemod custom sleeved cables with my Corsair AX1200i
  • As soon as receiving them, system won't post properly. Checked the cable, and one of the PCI-E cable seemed to be faulty.
  • Got a replacement, and all was good.
  • After a couple of years, the system randomly shut off and wouldn't boot back up.
  • Contacted Corsair and they shipped out a replacement unit right away.
  • All was good again until some time later it did the same exact thing.
  • Contacted Corsair and they shipped out a replacement unit right away again. (Gotta love Corsair support)
  • All was good until recently it freaking happened again. I've had the AX1200i replaced with a brand new unit twice, and I realized it was something else. The only thing consistent between all of the failures is the custom cables. I've went through a total system upgrade, so it was not likely any of the other components.
  • Contacted Cablemod and they basically said too bad, I'm out of warranty period. And that it is likely the power supply's fault. I'm totally fine not getting warranty service as it is beyond the period. But at the same token, it's disappointing seeing that they won't even put in the effort to investigate the issue. Even if not providing warranty service, I at the least expected them to send me a return label so I can send it in for them to inspect it for any faults.

They really should've offerend an inspection. Should be easy for them to do.

I'm running CableMod Pro replacement cables, no extensions, and so far they're fine. I'm powering my 450W PT card with a 650W PSU and they're getting along fine.
Still something to keep an eye on. From what I've seen so far, I'd guess problems would first show instability or shutdowns, not certain defects.

I’m going Titan Rig for my custom cables. Don’t trust Cable Mod anymore

Ive seen this happen to miners rigs on evga power supplys with the original cables. FYI mining is hard on computer parts. Ive never had issues with cable mod on my evga 1300w psus. Theyre rated for the wattage and aperage. Dont compare a miners problems to the average pc users problems. Theyre not the same.

The failures come from cheap cables/extensions that have 20-22awg wires. Plus dont daisy chain pcie power cables.

Hoggle
The use of aftermarket cables should be avoided would be the official response as I believe that it voids the warranty regardless of brand. Of course EVGA does offer individually sleeved cables on the website that would be allowed under the warranty.

I actually did not know this so this is helpful cause I'm building a white case build and want that clean look that says "I have money and haven't told my wife that I spent it"
