Hello!  So I have an old EVGA X58 Classified E760 with that good 'ole 920 D0 and I am seeing very well condition 980X Extreme Edition CPUs for $190 (originally $1000).

Is this worth the upgrade?  Will I see any major gains on my 1080p setup with 144Hz monitor?  Should I just wait until it's time to build all over again?  I am STILL satisfied with 100+ frame gaming on this rig (EVGA 970 SC).

If you're still satisfied with what you're running now, then you may as well save your money until you do a whole system upgrade... my 2 cents

I would try to go cheaper. Here is a 980x for under 150$
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Intel-Core-i7-980X-3-33GHz-Six-Core-SLBUZ-Processor-/152708818631?epid=109634758&hash=item238e27a6c7:g:gs8AAOSwqz9ZwG4b

There are several for sale right now under 150$

Also I would look into dropping an Intel Xeon hexcore, they can be had real cheap and overclock very well.
You may have to do a hard mod to be able to use a xeon.
Find the rev. number and do some research on Westmere mod

Xeons that I have used in my x58 systems.
X5660  BCLK unlocked  can be bought now for under 30$ or so
X5675 BCLK unlocked
w3680 fully unlocked Multiplier and BCLK going for 75-80$ or so
E5645 BCLK unlocked

Thank you all for the advice.  This system still shocks me to play RainbowSix Siege and Doom 2016 at full settings with ~100fps type gameplay.

I know soon I will have to move on from X58 but if I breathe life into it I am just wondering if it would be worth it.  I know I would have to revert back to stock BIOS and overclock all over again.  I would probably have to water cool a 980X.  I would probably have to consider a new PSU since this one is already 8 years old.  I would be looking at a $400-ish upgrade and possibly a GTX1070 to break that 4GB VRAM barrier with the 970.  I hate having a budget. :(

I can't speak for everyone but you should upgrade when you're ready. Use the time in-between to save the cash you need when that time comes.

You can do fairly well OC the xeons on air, they are 32nm CPUs and run cooler than the 920 45nm CPUs
AIO coolers work well and can be reused when you upgrade in the future. I hit 4ghz on an air cooler, stock 980x cooler.
Overclocking the xeons are fairly easy. 4ghz is almost a givin. I have seen as high as 4.5, depending on the chip.
You do not need a new PSU if the one you have works with the 920. Even if you do upgrade the PSU, it can be reused in a new build.
SSD makes a big difference if you have now already done so, that and get the 920 up to 4ghz or better and see how it goes.
Again the SSD can be moved to a new build when the time comes.

if your 920 is still keeping up with all you need it to then stay with it until you upgrade, the x58 is a great board and i did the hard mod and run a w3680 in it, its pretty quick but it still is showing its age, dropping 150~200 just on a CPU would not be worth it, there is much newer tech in todays boards, one big one is storage speed and options, the x58 760 (the same one i have) is sata 2, usb 2. hard to get working with pcie storage and that right is what will make your system "feel" fast, i would just wait and build anew, if you need the extra cores and unlocked cpu the grab the w3680, it basically the 980x with a xeon name. you will most likely have to mod the board, search in here and there is a thread about doing, its pretty easy to do.

I agree it's better to save up as long as you are happy I would save up for something bigger. My guess is the next CPU will be something with a lot more cores.

Use an Associates Code & SAVE 5% - 10% on your purchase. Just click on the associates banner to save, or enter the associates code at checkout on your next purchase. If you choose to use my code I want to personally say "Thank You" for using it.

I have a 141-BL-E760-A1.  I am seeing that I have to short some pads near the CPU.  Always makes me nervous..

two spots on the 760 board, one is above the cpu area, second is to the right of the x58 chip, you will need to remove the NB heatsink to access it.
a stedy hand and a decent soldering iron will do the trick,

1366 socket processors if by far behind the new systems
memory,hd,usb and pcie are so much slower.
The cpu is still fast for mathematics and it still rocks for 3D rendering.
if u have a system u are satisfied with upgrade it with a x980 it will do it.
OC 4500mhz and your system will be so much faster.
if u going for new graphiccard buy a new system.

After a bios update, I upgraded my 1366\ I7 965EE  to a Intel Xeon X5690 CPU. It was absolutely worth it. And you can get them for cheaper than the 980 just a tad over a $100 right now on flea bay.
Easy to overclock it sits @ 4.165 with two more cores and hyper-threading on np at all. the 965 hated hyper-threading on anything over 4.0. That 1366 was the best investment I ever made,
as far as upgrades I dropped a 1080 ti in that puppy even with the pci-e 2.0@16 its still kicks arse.
Theres me 2c
good luck

My configuration is similar - E760, started on a 920 D0 and bought a 990x when they dropped in January of whatever year it was (2011?).  Anyway, the thing was a BEAST to have around when folding really benefited from -SMP, Overclocking, and gave the huge bonus points for -BIGADV.  Once they edged out of 12 Threads and required 18, it became less useful.  I still use it today as my main system (the bones of which are circa 2009!) and I don't have many complaints - except the lack of USB 3.0 Support, the lack of SATA 3 (6G) support, the lack of an M.2 slot, the lack of PCIe 3.0 (this board is 2.0 spec)....

So I personally wouldn't drop the extra $ on the chip unless you're doing something CPU intensive (running VMs, Encoding video with CPU cycles instead of GPU, or running something like Cinema 4D / NetRender).  I don't think you'll notice the bump in performance... although the picture of 12 threads when you hit CTRL-ALT-DELETE is pretty cool.

Just ordered an x5690 for my x58 board. Was also on a 920 at 3.8 for 9 yrs lol. Scored a gtx 1060 ssc 6gb locally for $300 D;. Considering gpu prices right now, thought that was pretty good. Replaced a 8yr old GTX 460 lmfao.

Still fine for what I use it for, don't do any intensive gaming. Good platform.

Just my opinion, but the  unlocked multiplier in the w3680 makes it a better buy than the x5680, x5690. However, you will see a noticeable difference in your system with the x5690 upgrade.

+24gb 1600 ram

Do you think that it's worth bumping my 12GB triple channel RAM to 24GB?  What do you need 24GB for in your usage?

I had an incident years ago where I was getting crashes (if my memory serves me correct) and I found that one of my DIMM slots when populated was causing the issue.  So I moved the sticks to the alternate 3 slots and been fine ever since.  I wonder how to thoroughly diagnose that again, if I move the RAM over to the other 3 again and see what happens?  I use to have all 6 slots filled but with 2GB each.  I had the issue and sold both 6GB kits for a 12GB kit (3x4GB).

I even emailed EVGA once to ask if I could pay them to run diags on my board and tell me the results.  I am not sure the best way to test this old board to see if there are any issues.  I really do like this old board.  Can anyone advise me the best methods to check a motherboard's health?

Wasn't this board able to handle 1866Mhz RAM?

I guess it depends on your usage. Check your resource monitor and see how much memory you're using during high use sessions.

I do graphic design and when I'm working, it's not rare for me to have 5+ chrome windows, and 60+ tabs open, Photoshop and Illustrator with 10+ tabs each and a few other apps. Also have 3 monitors. But yea, if I have all that going I'll see my ram close to maxed out. If I'm working with really large file sizes, it'll start using the page file and that's when I'll notice it slowing down a bit. At this point I'll probably save everything and close everything down and open it all back up again, usually frees up a lot of resources and runs smoothly again.

For me, more ram the better. If I was going to build a new system right now, I'd probably go all out and build with server components and get as much ram as I could, 128 at least D;

Photoshop pros and illustrators really need lots of ram and very fast system drives.

I would agree with bdary. You could snag a 6 core xeon for cheap nowdays. All the other updates would be transferred to a new platform no sweat. PSU, AIO watercooler, 1070, SSD, etc. X58 though old still very powerful chipset. I still rock my 4way 762, love that thing. Unless you do a lot graphic intensive stuff i would skip ram. If you would upgrade to x99 x299 you would have to sell it at loss. Eather way, good luck with whatever you decide bud.
Cheers, Ghost
