What is the best cpu for the x58?

I don't know if should go with a x5675 or a w3690. Are these chips compatible or would i have to mod my motherboard to support either of these chips?
I also haven't found any oc guides for x58 + w3690.

Are these chips easy to overclock?

Motherboard: EVGA X58 3WAY SLI Classified (E760)

The Xeon W3690 has the highest multiplier which would in theory allow you to overclock it higher with less effort due to not needing to get as high of a BCLK frequency. However, you can also get an unlocked chip like the 980X or 990X which would also make it super easy.

Overclocking said CPU(s) would be just like overclocking your 920. There really isn't much more to it other than to tweak and play with it to find where your board/CPU combo is comfortable. :)

Thanks a lot! The 980x or the 990x are so rare to find, even on aliexpress the price is crazy.

    980x ~150usd
    990x ~240usd
    x5675 ~37usd
    w3690 ~70usd

Might help to post that in your first post

sorry i didn't add pictures, I had only included the cpu-z link validation which includes motherboard specs and bios info. Fixed the first post, thanks.

Well, in that case, the W3690 at $70 is a steal. I'd definitely go with that. :)

The W3690 has a 26x multiplier, which will make a high overclock very easy. I'd suggest sitting at 200 BCLK and changing the multiplier, though. That's the easiest way to get your RAM running at the optimal speeds.

Adding more memory to your system is probably a good idea as well. ;)

The w3680 and w3690 are multiplier and BCLK unlocked.
The w3670 hexcore and all the other xeons X, L and E series are multiplier locked, but are unlocked BCLK like the 920.
The i7-970 is a hexcore, I am not sure if it is multiplier unlocked or not, I believe it is.

Unless your board is a Classified3, FTW3 or SLI3, you will have to do a hard mod.
I have heard and had a list that I can not find right now sorry, the later/higher revisions of some other boards may not need the hard mod done. Like a REV1.2 or REV1.3 You can tell what revision the board is by looking at the board by the corner, what exact corner not sure you will have to look, its almost always near the corner.
There are many posts on how to mod the EVGA boards on this forum.
Most all Asus, Asrock, MSI, Gigabyte boards will support the xeons natively.

Just food for thought, sell the x58 parts and get x79 board, there are cheap unlocked xeons and even the i7-3930k CPUs are cheap, I paid 75$ for one and the same for the E5-1650 xeon, unlocked hexcores.
Little faster CPUs and they have AVX instruction that the older CPU do not have.
Even X99 boards are plentiful and reasonable now, those CPUs are getting cheaper with all the new CPUs from Intel and AMD being released, people are selling their older hardware to upgrade.
Good luck what ever you do. Hit me up if you need some help OC a xeon want settings info.

I know this is an old post but I am running into the same issue where I am looking to upgrade my CPU and my main choices for my old x58 sli mb are the i7 980x/990x or a w3690 based on price and performance and after reading and researching all of the comments and post I could find for the last day to help me with my decision, from my understanding is that the w3690 is a server based CPU and people are not taking into account that all of these cpu's will be bought used in 2024 and that they are ran constantly 24/7 when in a server and the amount of hours on them compared to a 980x would be significantly higher. The only reason i consider the w3690 is for the higher mhz of memory and overclock but feel i would have alot better luck buying a 980x/990x. Even though I know it is a crapshoot buying a used CPU.. Based on the information above I feel that the X would be a better buy and lower on hours used.
