Hi guys, I need some help, the civic I bought leaks oil from one, single place but it leaks A LOT (1qt just sitting in 3 weeks). It's right under the distributor, but it's not the distributor gasket I already replaced that. It's right under where the distributor slips into the engine... Any ideas? I'll try to get pictures when I get home but Yea, I'm at a total loss... It's a 1997 Honda Civic HX, D16Y5 motor, no mods whatsoever. Leak in question. http://imageshack.com/a/img853/5752/9g9s.jpghttp://imageshack.com/a/img842/7703/gkly8.jpg

Hmm. I'm a little rusty on this, but isn't the oil sensor below the distributor? It's hard to say without pictures. Lol.

It looks like the headgasket area. That looks like the coolant temp sensor not the oil sensor. I knew I was rusty! Lol

I originally thought it was the head gasket as well, but it's not. I was told a couple times it might be the rear main seal but idk.

The distributor is on the same side of the engine as the rear main seal. Typically if you're losing that much oil, that's probably the cause. It would also explain why someone would want to sell the car off for cheap.

Any idea how much that costs to get replaced? Also, I have a 1,500$ budget for repairs so, yea. I already got the timing belt, water pump, coolant system flushed and all the belts replaced for 267 (parts included) so I have just about 1,200 left to spend fixing it.

You can get an entire gasket set including rear main seal for less than $80. If you are able to do it yourself you can save a lot of cash.

its not the rear main seal(the rear main is in the bell housing of the trans and would not get oil up there, no way no how)... the oil pressure sensor, maybe I've seen them leak right through the sensor itself and come out the plug. (5 o'clock from distributor port, 1 wire if I remember correctly) more then likely its the head gasket or the v-tec solenoid. this pic has the v-tec oil pressure sensor plugged. but look there.

I would heavily doubt a rear main, its would be pretty crazy to get that much oil on top of the bell housing from a rear main. I have a couple with leaks including one that would leak so much after a long drive you have to fill it again and we never had anywhere near that much up there. Looks like the guy above me hit it on the head. If its not that sensor, then its likely that the o-ring on the distributor is cracked or bad, you should be able to get one the same size and pop it on without issue if that's the case.

Guys, I already replaced the dizzy o'ring, it was bad, it vaporized in my hand. However it wasn't leaking oddly enough. I'll look up a video on how to remove the v-tech solenoid, and if it isn't to labor intensive I'll do that first, then as a last resort I'll do the head gasket. It's just weird the head gasket would be the problem, as I'm not losing coolant, burning oil or overheating...

The head bolts are on the sleeve side of the block and the blocks warp over time. There is an oil pressure jacket right there on that corner. Its a very common problem. To test fix tighten down just that closest head bolt 1/4 turn. It will slow it down.
