TechPowerUp - ASUS Enters the Kitchen Gadget Space With the PureGo PD100

“Normally we wouldn't really cover kitchen gadgets, but Asus has just launched its PureGo PD100 in the US market and it's the company's first entry in this market space. However, it's also an "IoT" gadget, as it features Bluetooth connectivity and an app, as well as wireless charging.

At this point, you're probably wondering what the heck it is though, well, ASUS calls it a ‘Fruit and Vegetable Cleanliness Detector’. In reality, it appears to be a sensor that detects pesticides and other ‘harmful’ pollutants in water. In other words, you have to fill up your sink, wash your fruit or vegetables, then plop the PD100 in the water to tell you how dirty the water is. The idea is that you replace the dirty water with clean water until the device tells you that there's no more pollutants in the water. At $199.99 it's hard to see how this is going to be a big seller for ASUS, but maybe it'll be this year's gift from tech people to ion.”

My thoughts:  At $199.99 I doubt seriously many people will purchase this.  If they stick it in the Sharper Image catalog, they might sell a few.

Note:  It would be a stretch to put this in the "Computer Hardware News" forum.

Interesting. I guess ASUS is trying to expand into different areas to increase revenue.

AMD Ryzen 9 7950X,  Corsair Mp700 Pro M.2, 64GB Corsair Dominator Titanium DDR5  X670E Steel Legend, MSI RTX 4090 Associate Code: H5U80QBH6BH0AXF. I am NOT an employee of EVGA

......... but who fills up their sink to wash vegetables?  I suppose for those of us without running water, I could see the value..... I guess.  But who has $200 for this but not running water?  What a weird market segment to go after.

The gadget would have to assume you have clean tap water to start with, which is not going to be the case in many places. I guess you have to measure the tap water in the sink first to 'zero it out' as a baseline, then wash the fruit/veges and measure again. This doesn't make much sense though, as you'd be washing fruit/vege under running water normally, not in a sink full of water where the more items you wash, the dirtier it gets. Do they really expect you to refill the sink over and over? What a waste of water resources. What about false positives in the water? So many things that don't make this gadget viable, but hey, I guess some overzealous green fanatic must have pushed this and some equally idiotic management level in ASUS ignored common sense and just decided to market it because they figured they can then jump on the green bandwagon somehow. How much money was wasted developing this? So fed up with really poor decisions based purely on green agenda appearances.

I assume it's a product more geared towards the Asian market 🤔

I don't think so.  This is ASUS's first foray into kitchen gadgets and may be their last, who knows.  You have to admit that they picked a niche area without much competition instead of blenders, toaster, coffee makers, etc.
