AMD Breaks 30% CPU Market Share in Steam Hardware Survey | TechPowerUp

Today, Valve has updated its Steam Hardware Survey with the latest information about the market share of different processors. Steam Hardware Survey is a very good indicator of market movements, as it surveys users that are spread across millions of gaming systems that use Valve's Steam gaming platform. As Valve processes information, it reports it back to the public in a form of market share of different processors. Today, in the Steam Hardware Survey for May 2021, we got some interesting data to look at. Most notably, AMD has gained 0.65% CPU market share, increasing it from the previous 29.48% to 30.13%. This represents a major move for the company, which didn't own more than 30% market share with its CPUs on Steam Survey in years.

As the Steam Survey tracks even the market share of graphics cards, we got to see a slight change there as well. As far as GPUs go, AMD now holds 16.2% of the market share, which is a decrease from the previous 16.3%. For more details about Steam Hardware Survey for May 2021, please check out Steam's website here.

The pity of this is that AMD's percentage would have been higher if there were enough high end CPUs for sale in my opinion.

Competition is a good thing. Glad to see AMD is pushing forward. They could have really put on a good show, if they did their GPU release more obtainable.

I built a dozen rigs since the new Ryzens came out... all Intel.  AMD raised their new 6 core price to $300.  Luckily Microcenter had 10400 for $150, and various other Intel CPU's on sale for around $200.  The savings went towards GPU's. If the 5600x was $250 or less, I'd have used AMD for half of them, but $300 was too much for 6 cores.  I figure each of those new pc's will average 5+ years, and maybe AMD will still have an edge when they decide to update their rigs. Either way price will factor in.

AMD was right to raise pricing since people paid it, but for us gamers, the CPU doesn't matter that much especially at 1440p+.

I expect that number to increase even more the coming years. Getting to a 50/50 share would be absolutely devastating for intel, so lets hope intel decides to finally step it up a notch, especially with their upcoming gpus.

Best thing to happen to the CPU market. Intel prices were just AWFUL before Ryzen.

Eh, Ryzen prices aren't exactly a bargain now. They used to be, but AMD has turned into Intel on pricing now.

I built a 2600X system and then a 3600XT just to throw AMD a bone for their improvements, with the 3600XT being nice with the PCIe 4.0 features. However my Intel system is still my main rig and it blast my 3600XT system out of the water in speed. Although I have probably 4X the money at the least in my Intel system, but the 3600XT was built before the current chip shortages and prices where good.

Heck even memory and NVMe drives have went up in price now.

AMD has been doing rather well lately. in the past i have always used intel for my gaming pc but with my upcoming build i am switching to AMD with my upcoming build. At least where i am it looks like AMD cpus are getting back in stock so that number might start to trend even more in AMD's favor.

    That's right, like a boss😎👍.  Good news

Those who abuse power, are nothing but scumbags! The challenge of power is how to use it and not abuse it. The abuse of power that seems to create the most unhappiness is when a person uses personal power to get ahead without regards to the welfare of others, people are obsessed with it. You can take a nice person and turn them into a slob, into an insane being, craving power, destroying anything that stands in their way.

Whichever company is in the lead is going to set prices like Intel is famous for doing. We need both companies to be competitive in performance to get fair pricing

So, 30% of gamers on Valve use AMD CPU

This, poll/survey tend to be bias. Im betting the total market share of AMD is less then 10%

30% seems pretty reasonable given that Intel are stuck on a 14nm process.

Leaning to making my first ever build be an AMD.  I have two friends that recently built their own systems (far more knowledgeable than I am) and they both went AMD after being Intel and they said they've never regretted their decision.  For me, it seemed that AMD supported their boards/CPUs/socket longer than Intel, but now with the soon-to-arrive AM5, I feel like maybe I should hold off on building.  Or maybe wait to see if AM4 goes on sale.  Decisions, decisions.

AMD needs to lower their latency a bit, then they'll be truly fine.

AMD fought a perfect battle. Unfortunately, the epidemic disrupted the original life, and all foundries were fully loaded, otherwise AMD should be even greater.

Went AMD this round with a 5950X.
Would have gone AMD anyhow.  Basically it saved me from dropping $10K on a Threadripper/Pro rig.
Unfortunately, Intel's offerings simply don't fit my work profile and I need the rig to last me for more than a couple years.

Impressive, but this only captures the gaming/enthusiast market which has been heavily AMD biased over the last couple years.  Normal PC/Laptop market is more Intel biased and the corporate market is vastly Intel.
