All, going on vacation, not sure of my internet status over the next 10 days or so. But I'll get back to the guide updates as soon as I can.

bowlinra zophar Also @ Barbarossa, what water blocks are you using on your board? I haven't looked into water setups at all, maybe Barbarossa or someone else can work up a "How To" and some cost numbers. As linked in my post with the pics I´m using the Aquacomputer cuplex kyrros delrin G34 the Koolance 370 also works, bur requires additional screws So setting up an quad G34 with watercooling is not that much different than your average custom water loop. Just make sure you have ample rad size and enough ooomph on the pumps. I suggest two Laing DDC 1 T (swiftech mcp 350/355s), or if you want to go overboard the Laing D5 (swiftech 655). Giving you an estimate on cost is somewhat difficult from Europe, and I only needed the cpu blocks and some tubing as I already had all the rest. edit: have fun on your vacation bowlinra!

bowlinra Hardware Decisions and Discussions - Case / Mounting Case or run Naked (w/o a case). That is the question. I still have mixed feelings on this one. I guess my visions of granduir lead me to think, I might have more than one of these setups, needing some form of a wooden homemade rack. I also had concerns with the weight of the CPU Coolers on a vertical mounted motherboard. I'm not so concern with this anymore (see note in the Heat sink / CPU Coolers section <add link>). I also thought the heat displacement would be better horizontally placed. If you wanted a case the #1 issue is the size of the motherboard is just huge (16.48" x 13" (41.9cm x 33.0cm)) it NOT going to physically fit in most cases, virtually all case will have to be modified somehow. The Supermicro H8QGi motherboards have 13 screws to properly attach to the case, I would guess 6 of those screw in standoffs will have to be drilled and tapped. Even large case like the popular full case Cooler Master HAF 932 will need move fans to the outside of the case for the side, top and back. Details reference ChelseaOilman's New 4P Build Still Under Construction - Check Back for Updates For addition Pics look in the Pictures section <link> Musky's Mounting PC's on wood instead of cases <<<< Pics in thread give a 404 Error.

I wanted to say thank you again. My July bonus will be here in a few weeks and then I will be able to begin my first 4P project. It will take a few months for me to save enough for all four chips, but that's the beauty of this. I can start with one and build on up.

Hey man, I'm ordering the parts to do this. MB- same as yours. CPU- 4x 6128's (loaned from tanner2) and the same ones Nathan_p is running. I'm researching the rest, and the reason for this post. Memory- You say "This translates for optimal performance each CPU needs 4 separate memory sticks." Can I use 1 8GB stick for each processor and be okay? And how important is cas latency 7 vs 9? I'll have many more ? as I go on and I know I can count on you and our great teammates for help. Even our bros. @ [H].

Afaik, you can run with 1 memory stick per cpu, but you´ll get best results with 4 (4x1GB or more) sticks per cpu

It will certainly run with 1 stick per CPU, but then you will only be using 1/4 of the memory bandwidth available. You really need 4 per CPU to use all 4 channels.

It would be more important to have 4 stick of memory per CPU than the CAS 7 vs 9. Certainly faster is better, but it do play into Overclocking.

anyone have any suggestions for mounting the 4p motherboard in a rackmount setup with these large coolers on them? My dad scored me a 6 foot tall server rack and I plan on mounting my folding rigs in this cabinet. I was thinking of mounting them on some sort of tray that I could extend out when needed. I am thinking of not using cases since the rack is enclosed and is pretty much a case already. ... Another thought, do these really get that hot if I don't overclock them? I plan on using 4x 6166HE's running stock. Can't I just use a 1U case and mount it all in that and attach to the rack? ( http://www.supermicro.com/products/chassis/1U/818/SC818TQ-1400LP.cfm) <- says its made for the H8QGi+-F

Slide out rails ain't as cheap as one would think, and they have to be match with your case. Certainly you could find a steal at there, but it not unheard of to cost $100 for just the rails. As for 1U servers my below background still applies. Background: Server boards are design more or less for Data Centers, where cool air is rapidly circular thought the case, with the smallest height and foot print as possible. Rack mounted Data Center devices are generally avoided in the home environment for several reasons. Most folks don't have a server rack at home, they can take up alot of space, but the main reason I believe is the noise levels of the fans. These Data Center devices fans are design to pull high volumes of cool air thru the device and are very loud and typically not user adjustable. How Loud? Take your vacuum cleaner in the closet and turn it on and close the door. If you and significant others are OK with the sound volume, ignore this warning. mcyhanick Another thought, do these really get that hot if I don't overclock them? I've always ran my AMD 4P with CM Hyper+ 212 at stock speed were pretty cool, I'm think 32Cish? Even overclocked usually under 40C. My recommendation is go cheap, and use the money for more hardware. I'd get the following: 1/2 in. x 2 ft. x 4 ft. Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF) Handy Panel ($8.87 per) 1 - Crown Bolt 1-1/2 in. x 72 in. Steel Plain Slotted Angle ($16.48 per) Cut the Steel Slotted Angle for rails and directly bolt to your rack, then cut down the MDF board to use as a platform for the motherboard. It's basically the same thing I have, except my rack is several inches wide than an standard 19in rack. Bowlinra's Home Rack Garage Build - Beating the Folding Heat of Summer

If height and space is an issue, you can always go with water cooling and keep your 1U profile.

Sure can, but compared to air it a lot more $ and that's my issue, also the 4p are quite cool running when not overclocked, and that makes the H2O more of a pain than it needs to be (my main rig is H2O cooled)

Water cooling is complete overkill in IMHO, even with overclocking. I'm running my overclocked in the garage without air conditioning during the summer.

References Then you want to read these: Musky's multiple processor g34 checklist Tear's Overclock BIOS Musky's Ubuntu guide Musky's 212 mounting guide Jmtyra's ** Team 32: 4P Folding Mega Thread **
I've read pretty much all those and am at the point of looking at flashing the bios soon. I could use a little help "anyone welcome to answer" first off I'm no noob to flashing bios. The H guide tho is a little confusing about which bios is for what board since I 'm not very familiar with every type or there names. The H8QGi/6 the /6 of this is a little confusing but I think is the correct bios for the board I have. Next if that's the correct bios?? is using the flash.bat the best way for this flash and are all the correct flags already within that? Edit: think I found the answer to one of my questions, but like a answer just the same. May help other new comers to the 4P clan. Plus I'm trying to not ask to many questions at once since some question seem to get over looked and never answered.

SuperMicro basically make two boards the SM H8QGL with different CPU socket layout and the SM H8QGi that you have. There a version of the H8QGi board with SAS controllers added called H8QG6. So both (H8QGi & H8QG6) boards use the same version of the BIOS (G60NG4.A11). BUT the H8QGL has a different BIOS (GL1NG4.511). I've only flashed 2 boards (both H8QGi) and I recall downloading the stock BIOS update utility from SuperMicro's website and used the [H] BIOS. Personally I'd run the board stock for a week or so, before adding the [H] BIOS to the mix as well as minimizing anything that might popup requiring a RMA. Musky's post on the basic information -> Additional information on the different board series.

I don't think it matters. I did disable BMC but can't recall if it was before or after the flash. I found my thread setting up up my first AMD 4P rig.. I was nervous too.. You may find it helpful. AMD 4P Burning and Prep for OC?
