So my current options are too either get a 970 and after cool in the future, or just get a 980 and sli later. Then when those get outdated, sell then and but another single faster GPU.

I know 970's sli are faster for a little bit more, but I feel like they will get outdated faster.

I play at 1080p, but I might go triple monitor.

Also, I have never owned a top tier GPU before.

get the gtx 980 acx2.0 from EVGA. I too was deciding between the 970 or 980 and settled with 980. Also if you look around these forums, a lot of people are having issues (whine, black screen, stuttering) w/ gtx 970s. I am not saying 980s dont have these issues but seems more few and far apart. Get a 980 for now. Play games till ur eyes fall out. Sli later.

I went with the 970 because spending $200 more for a small bump in performance just wasn't worth it to me. Now if Nvidia would have priced it differently I would have jumped all over the 980, but for this generation it just wasn't the case. I should also mention that I was going to do SLI with either choice right off the bat, so that $200 difference was actually $400 which made my decision easy since $400 is not worth the 15-20% bump.

If 4k or multi monitors is your soon future, then either choice will become "outdated" to you at about the same time. They will especially feel "outdated" to you once a few generations pass and you start to see GPUs that can handle 4k more easily and HBM becomes standard. If you plan on staying with 1080p, then the 970s are your best choice no questions asked.

980 if you want the newest and best regardless of the price, 970 for the best bang for your buck. I overclocked my 970 and it's as powerful as a 980.

As for the 970, I was reading where someone is Ocing the 970 FTW to 1597 as of yesterday. He reported stable clock and is tweaking even
    higher.

I'd wait on SLI.  If a single 970 isn't enough performance, go with a 980.  A year down the road or whenever the next generation comes out, that's when you add another for SLI.

Also, if you go 970, I'd get the FTW version.  Quieter and faster.

PCWorld tested the EVGA 970 FTW if you wanna see how it did against the 980 and R9.

I'm surprised on how well the 290x is holding up, especially at 1440p. I guess it goes to prove that, the extra memory bandwidth does make a difference at higher res.

    My Laptop (GE63VR-7RF):
    -7700HQ.
    -16GB RAM.
    -GTX 1070.
    -128GB SSD.
    -1X 1TB 7200 spinny drive.

It might be keeping up, but being an owner of a 290X before switching to a 970, the ATI cards drivers are still complete junk. Alien Isolation crashes on both cards, but far more often on AMDs drivers. I am so glad I switched I am picking up another card tomorrow for SLI. Need to sell the 290X before it isn't worth crap.

    Intel Core I7 4790K @ 4.8GHZ
2X EVGA GTX 970 SC ACX 2.0 SLI @ Default Clocks until drivers improve
    2X Samsung Evo 840 SSD
    ACER XB270H G-Sync 27 Inch monitor
    Corsair Vengance Pro 2400Mhz DDR3 2X8GB
    Some fans and other stuff.
