So, basically it's an HDMI in front of your PC for convenience purposes?

Yes, and a card with an internal HDMI connector so no cables going outside of the PC.

This USB 3.0 Front panel is just as I need. I removed my I/O Panel thanks to stupid old fashioned wires and external USB 3.0 connectors. Now I turn on PC on motherboard. It's god because I have little doors and holes in front panel are not visible. I didn't know they build and reference VR model... In some different box, smaller... xexe GeForce boxes are always nicer than Radeon...

95% of cases already have a usb 2.0 and 3.0 already built into the front of the case, correct?
So, if you had 2x usb 2.0 and 2x 3.0 already built into the front... this makes 4xusb 3.0
The issue I see is motherboards with only 1 usb 3.0 internal header... like the x99 classified.. I guess that means the x99 Dark will have to be fitted with 2 usb 3.0 internal headers and a 2.0? Well the Rampage V Extreme already has 2 usb 3.0 and a 2.0..
EVGA... needs to fix that quick.

The 4x USB ports requirement has been known for about 6 months now. One of the ports is the positional camera, one for the XBONE controller. That means the 2x USB ports on the panel are for the internal 6DOF sensor and the USB sound. So, this panel is just for the headset needs, not the controller or the positional camera.

Having an HDMI cable and accompanying USB cables sticking out of a front mounted plate on a tower? Ummm, for me at least, no thanks!! A tower faceplate is a sub-optimal/awkward solution. It may look nice without anything plugged in, however having cables that plug in there would just be begging to have them get torqued or ripped out due to the high placement, rigidity and lack of cable relief. A much better solution is to simply go to monoprice and pick up a 3 foot premium HDMI extension cable and a couple of USB3 extension cables and problem solved! You get the same "extra" cable length/reach for about $10 and can bundle those cables together or even create a nice little breakout box that sits at the side of your PC where everything for your Oculus/Vive VR gear would nicely plug in. It would lower the cables out of the way, keeping them from getting yanked out and give more "play" and strain relief, plus solve the issue of not having to reach behind your box to plug things in. While the front panel idea looks really nice, it simply isn't practical. The connectors will get trashed in a hurry after getting ripped out and/or yanked on a few times... Plus it will look like crap with all the cables hanging off of it. Just my 2 cents. I would MUCH rather see EVGA sell a really nice metal enclosure about the size of a small brick that is slightly weighted with rubber feet so as to not move around too much, that would provide all of the needed ports out of the one end and a single fat bundled cable coming out of the other (about 3-4 feet long) that would then split out into the needed HDMI and USB connectors for plugging in at the rear of a case. Now THAT idea would sell to EVERYONE that wanted to hook an Oculus to their PCs! Price it reasonably, ~$40 or less, and it would sell like crazy!

^^^ Agree. But to that I would like that that 1 cable would be pluged directly to vga new port like new samsung 4k tv has were you plug your new devises to box and that box conects to tv via 1 cable.

It's basically the same premise as having headset jacks on the front of a case. That being said, the USB2 port on my HAF-X is broken because of something getting ripped out that was plugged in a few years ago.

Some very good points. lol never have i ever used front ports for anything. Thats me though. Nice little dongle with uni cable running from the back would offer more versatility i would think ^^^. I wonder what sort of marketing and customer base research was done prior to developing such product. Also wonder if NVidia has its own generic "bay thingy" for vanilla NVidia VR cards or its EVGA own design. VR customer base is not that huge, its still a emerging sector of the market. I would definitely ask enthusiasts (which they must of done) around before making it. Just curious.

I'd be much more interested if there was a GTX980 version non-ti. I'd be able to afford it a bit better that way.

This is something I was questioning myself, and felt if this was the best move for EVGA to do right now with the customer base still in the growing stage. Maybe they know it will grow, and now that they are ahead, people interested in VR will see this particular 980ti is out there for their needs.

I have this GPU. I am getting flakyness out of the front HMDI port. I unpluged everything, made sure the internal HMDI cable wasn't grounding against anything but still flaky with the DK2. Specifically not long after I start viewing anything in the Rift DK2 in VR I get a white screen of snow. I plug it into the back and this does not happen at all, even once. I am hoping this is just an issue with the DK2 and that the CV1 won't have this issue or there was no reason for me to shell out the extra money for the drive bay. When I get the Rift CV1 next month I will report back.

I'm experiencing this exact same issue. DK2 has issues with front port, works for a few minutes with occasional static/interference then all snow. Fresh Windows 10 install.

Really the point is the the drive bay is so that you don't have to connect the VR gear in the rear. You can connect it in the front and have that much more cord length. That is provided the connections work. I have used the heck out of the USB 3.0 connectors so I can verify they work as advertised. The video port? Not so much. I am hoping it is a DK2 thing and EVGA has actually tested this with a CV1. If so then great, it will be a helpful to using VR. IF not. Then that is clearly a big miss. Will see which. I will reserve judgement until my CV1 rift comes and I try to use it.

VIVE or Rift. Those are what I'd consider the only true contenders at the moment. Rift is shipping, VIVE isn't yet.

To be fair it is a long wait for either at the moment. July for the Rift. May for the Vive last I heard. You can get the rift earlier if you buy a new computer that is sold for the rift but that is some serious money.

Not totally true. My Rift gets delivered in about 12 hours. The back order on Rifts have new orders shipping in July though. Early bird gets the worm.

Well I get my supposedly in April. I was an early worm, the website had issues is all. Just letting other folks know that they can't order it and get it quickly right now.

Just to settle the confusion on the USB port count and type. It requires 2 USB3 ports and a HDMI port. The XBOX One wireless controller can be in either a USB2 or USB3 port for that third USB port requirement. With it being a wireless controller, no need for it to be plugged into the 980ti VR panel. Just plug it into a back mobo USB 2 or 3 port. I'm assuming that theoretical 4th port people talk about will end up for the unreleased Oculus Touch controller. So, the 2 USB3 + 1 HDMI breakout box on the 980ti VR is properly configured for the new Oculus Rift CV1. I would suggest if EVGA does a revision on the 5.25 VR panel that they put 2 USB3 and 2 USB2 ports into it. Although not needed, that would cover all potential configurations.
