Hi,

I'm a new user of EVGA as my name suggests. and this is my first post. so any mistakes please ignore. I have a few quick questions related to 790i and I'm hoping that I'll find the right answers here. thanks in advance for your help.

RAM

The ram I reckon should be on EVGA compatibility list. or else it wont work and all that. the RAM I've found from an online seller is this one.

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/148817

Now I reckon its one of the most important bit specially in 790i motherboard. because what I've heard that it wont accept just any ram and gives a lot of blue screens in windows, so the ram has to be the right one. if you guys, from experience of this motherboard and ram can tell me if it will work properly or not. I wanted a G.skill PI series ram but they are not making it any of them for this motherboard. and when they where, I wasnt looking for them. so if you guys can please tell me if this ram will work with the motherboard and wont cause a lot of problems. and I'm not looking to OC anything so 1333mhz is alright I reckon.

PSU

I'm thinking about Corsair 750 modular PSU. I have one GTX295 superclocked. I hope that the PSU is enough for GTX295. I'm not sure about it either because it takes lots of power and two power inputs. but I've heard that the Corsair 750 have the right power connections. do you guys reckon it will be enough?

I hope that you guys from your hands on experience of this motherboard + RAM + PSU can advice me best and help me choose the right products. and kindly include the link of RAM or PSU which you suggest because I've found it difficult to locate things for this motherboard. thanks in advance for your help. and please ignore the errors in post I'm at work and need to be quick before my manager comes. cheers!

    Welcome to the Forum.

I would not recommend trying to run that RAM you linked....it is only 1.6v and the 790i "wants" 1.7v-2.0v modules to run properly. I looked at all the RAM available at that site and only found one model that I would even consider purchasing, if it were me: http://www.ebuyer.com/product/234965 you would have to buy 2 sticks since, they do not have a 4GB kit of them. IMHO, to get the most out of your GTX 295, you will want to OC your CPU to at least 1600MHz.

What is the model number of the PSU that you are interested in? So, I can look up it's spex.

Do you have any other sites that you can shop from??? I would like to try and find you some Patriot RAM, if possible.

    Hello Jeffrey,

Thanks for the quick reply. and a warm welcome. cheer for that.

The PSU I'm talking about is http://www.ebuyer.com/product/164950

If I have to OC the CPU to 1600mhz then why not get the RAM which correspondents to the same speed as well. there was a corsair 1600mhz RAM which is on the compatibility list of 790i but I cant remember. I'm sure that I've heard of it as well. maybe you know what I'm talking about.

Do you reckon that the PSU will do the job?

Thanks for the reply and for your help. cheers!

Welcome to the forums..Just because RAM isn't on the Mobo QVL don't mean it won't work, if it's on the QVL it just means it's actually been tested and works..Also you might find that your Mobo is on the RAM's QVL but not on the Mobo's QVL..That corsair stuff should work fine but I'd get at least 1600MHz stuff and there's better/faster stuff I could recommend: PVS34G1600LLK
It's EOL but you can still find it around here and there, depending where your from (I see the corsair stuff is priced in Pounds).
That PSU would be an outstanding choice (If i'm looking at the one you have in mind): Single 12V 60A rail..That will be my next PSU when I need one is one with a single rail and alot of amps on it, probably a Corsair too.

Yes, that PSU should be just fine for running 1- GTX 295 and the rest of your components.

That RAM I linked for you is 1600MHz RAM and is the proper voltage required by the board. That compatability list is waaay out of date now. EDIT: The RAM that bob linked for you is the exact model that I am running and if you can find it, that would be your best bet. BTW, what CPU are you going to be running??

I don't know how to reply to two people in one post lol so I'll post a reply a like this.

Bob the RAM which you have suggested is great I reckon. and it's available here
    http://www.overclockers.c...d=MY-041-PA&tool=3

and do check the review on the product page on that site because it says something about voltage increase. thats where jeffrey you come in! that RAM info says its for intel chipset x38 or something like that. can you both confirm that I'm looking at the same ram. because I googled the product id and its one of the results. if you are using the same ram jeffery then I reckon I should go for it too. its a safe bet. I'll then OC the CPU to 1600mhz and use the patriot ram. but can you check the link that I provided to make sure its the right one. PSU is sorted then. one less thing to worry about. and the CPU is X3370. is it a good choice? sorry guys my manager is here. so I'll reply in the evening now. cheers for your help!

You better jump on that Patriot RAM ASAP....I LOVE mine!!! I'll go lookup that CPU now and post on it.

EDIT: That CPU appears to be almost identical to a Q9650 so, I would think that it would have no trouble at all running at 1600MHz.

It all depends on how far you intend to push the Overclock on the CPU.  While it is not required, I prefer to run my memory clocks linked and synced.  In my case, that means that the memory has to be capable of running 1800 stable on a 450 bus.  Figure out how fast you would like to push your CPU and decide how fast the memory needs to be to achieve that.  If you have the cooling, and the patience, you should be able to get close to 4ghz with most chips.

I have had great success with Patriot and Mushkin ram but would not rule out antything except OCZ.  I have no problem with OCZ memory but this board does not seem to like OCZ very much.

Morning guys and sorry for the delay in my reply. I'm going to order today because I reckon I should do it before their stock goes out. the price is good too. but, before I do that can either of you jeffrey or bob or anybody else can confirm that it will work on the motherboard. because on the overclockers website it says it supports x38 and intel chipset. I'll order as soon as I get either one of your confirmation. the manufacturer code is the same and all that but it says its for Intel and thanks bob for the spec sheet mate. cheers for that. I hope one of you will reply before my manager come lol. and chememan I reckon I wont OC it to 4gig based on a few facts. and top one being not so experienced and this being my first build. but will do till things are stable. thanks for your help and I appericiate it mate. cheers!

Yeah they're definately compatible..JeffreyHam uses them (as in post #5) and I use the older (but the same) puke-green N (for NVIDIA chipset) version of them.

Cheers for that bob and I'll order it right now. I appreciate your help, and thanks to jeffrey as well for his help. I'm gobsmacked at my lack of knowledge that I've been thinking that those RAM modules wont work because it says in its description that its for Intel and X38 and my board is Nvidia chipset (I reckon 790i Sli FTW is nvidia). anyway, thanks to all you guys and for your advice in helping me toward the right product. nice one guys. cheers!

P.S. more questions to follow soon enough lol.

Hey, Terry.....you are most welcome and I apologize for my slow response. I have been out of town helping my best friend upgrade some parts in his system.

Long story, short....this model of RAM was not yet being manufactered at the time the 790i RAM Compatability List was made. Here is a link to the original Patriots that were made for the 790i MoBo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820220331&cm_re=PVS34G1600LLKN-_-20-220-331-_-Product  If you compare their spex with the model I have and you soon will, you will see why they work just fine. If the green ones were available at the time, I would have purchased them...but, they were all gone so, I matched them as close as I could. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820220285

Got the RAM. and it looks very sexy! or seductive perhaps. I hope the moderators wont mind me saying that. next is the 184 quid mobile phone bill and then PSU next week or after that. V.A.T increase is draining the blood at the moment. anyway, what do you guys reckon I should get, Corsair HX750W or Corsair HX850W?
I also got my Corsair 600T case today! its also very, well you know what I mean. have a great weekend and I hope that you guys will give some input about the PSU. thanks in advance. cheers.

I would go with the 850W. It is much better to have more power available than you think you'll need right now and it will help for future upgrades....Just MHO.

Cheers for that jeffrey. I was also thinking about HX850w PSU that I might need some upgrade of some kind and then don't want to spend more money. a sensible thing to do. and thanks for backing it up. I'll get the HX850w after I've paid my mobile bill. thanks for your help. cheers.

Its about time to revive this post of mine. and I'm in need of some input on the Bios update. I hope you guys will input again as before.

I'll quickly list the parts that I currently have.

Evga 790i SLi FTW Digital PWM
    Intel QX9650 (stock)
    Patriot 2x2 PVS34G1600LLK
    GTX 460 2GB in SLi
    Corsair H70
    LG Blu ray
    Western Digital 640GB

I haven't changed any settings on anything. motherboard is on default to the best of my knowledge because I took it out of the box and put everything together and that's it. working great almost a month. no complaints at all.

I've just gotten off the phone, speaking to an Evga tech support about the bios update, it seems that DZ19 is the latest and greatest at the moment. now I've never update bios and before I do that I want your input to make the procedure fail safe. and that I do it right. if you guys are using the same bios kindly input and let me know so I can update in a few hours time. I plan to update after 3 or 4 hours and wait till I get some input on this bios and get some tips. I've been told just to follow the instructions on the bios download page and it will work like a charm. hopefully.

Your input is appreciated and I hope you guys will help me sort this out quickly. have a nice weekend everybody. cheers

If you have DZ18 bios I would stay with it. I didn't care DZ19.

    Cheers for the reply jhatc1.

I just checked and its I790DZ13. so you reckon I should update it to DZ19? because I burned the DZ19 onto a disk and wanted to make sure that I have some input on this matter before I update it. so thanks for the reply and now I'd like to have a suggestion that go ahead and do it or not? I reckon DZ18 is not available for download since the release of DZ19. and I don't want to download anything from third party website.

Let me know if I should update the bios and if not and stick with DZ13, why? I've heard that new bios updates and fixes issues like temps and all that. I hope you guys will input soon because I want to get this over and done with this evening so I can play some games lol. your input is much appreciated. cheers

P.S. found the DZ18. and now have the choice between DZ18 and 19. which one?

IMHO, DZ13 is a pretty old BIOS version, so I would definitely flash to a more current version.  I would flash to the latest version which is DZ19, and if I encountered problems, then I would flash to DZ18.

I've successfully updated the bios to DZ19. followed the procedure mentioned on the bios page and it all went smoothly. loaded the default Bios and it worked fine. now, tomorrow hopefully I'll post the template of the Bios and with your help try to tweak the Bios and overclock the CPU to 4ghz which is currently at stock 3ghz. thanks again for your input again and its much needed tomorrow when I post the template. I appreciate your input. have a nice weekend. cheers
