I'm trying to update the bios on my motherboard using the cd method. I burned the iso provided on the EVGA site with image burning software, twice (using nero and imgburn, discs were regular CD-R). I go into the bios and make cdrom the boot device, and restart my computer. It starts booting from cdrom, and the text that appears is "Loading Caldera DR-DOS" and then it stops and won't take any input. The underscore "_" is blinking but i can't type anything, the only thing i can do is restart the computer.

So i'm wondering what i'm doing wrong here, or if there is any other way of doing this using a cd, as i don't have a floppy and have read bad things about using the software from within windows.

I haven't updated the bios before (it says it's 6.00 version) and i'm trying to update to P33

So, I'm not alone, lol, received my new board from EVGA , upgrade my  cpu with an E8400 and I read then I have to upgrade my Bios .

I did just like you with the same result , I did burn a couple of cd .. lol ..I'm gone a try the floppy method found in the troubleshooting.

    Will let you know .

Are these self built systems or something prebuilt like a Alienware system?

One thing you can try is the ALT+F2 method. On boot hit those 2 keys and it should go right into the BIOS flash for you.

Also Erik to find your BIOS version look on the boot screen there will be a line on boot (6A61ITT2) Release number 691N0P**. The ** is you BIOS version.
If it goes to fast to see hit Pause on keyboard to halt boot, enter or pause again to then continue to boot.
Which version you have and what CPU?

For example in this pic they are using P26 BIOS.

a little update for you, i managed to flash my bios using the USB key method. It would hang after i selected to keep a backup of my current bios, but when i chose to just flash the new bios without a backup it worked like a charm. P33 version now.

the alt+f2 method was useless and didnt let me give any input at all, only thing i could do was reset the system

i dont know what my old bios was, but it shipped with the mobo which i bought about 3 years ago.it's a self built system btw.

    spec
    cpu:  c2d E6850
ram: 4GB corsair XMS value 800mhz
    gfx: 8800 ultra
    psu: corsair HX620

any idea why the flash utility on the board didnt work? it's the first time i've flashed a bios but i never thought it would be this hard lol

anyway thanks to roche for the usb thing and diff for having a look

Pretty sure the 680i has no way to keep a backup of the BIOS so that is probably why it was hanging, it had no place like a second BIOS chip to back it up to. LOL

Flashing really is not that hard, can can be a major bummer if it fails for any reason. Then you'd need to at least get a new BIOS chip.

Why it would not work from CD in your case I have no clue as I always use IMGburn and never have had any problems like you stated.
Just wondering if maybe you have some disks that just will not work well with either making them bootable or maybe you were burning them too fast. Did you use the verifying option to make sure they burned correctly?
I've had some LG disks a few years ago that just would not work for burning bootable disks for some reason.

Glad you got it all worked out though and it should be a while before you need to flash a BIOS at least as P33 is the last BIOS the 680i will have and that is like almost 2 years old itself. LOL.
