Linus did a video about SLI with 3090s. There is like one game that has real benefit from it (Strange Brigade or something). Everything else had marginal results. SLI for gaming is dead.
Maybe for workstation applications (ARE there workstation uses that benefit from SLI?), sure, but that's what the 3090 is for.

I actually did this for my last build while it was enjoying a renaissance. It did not turn out well. Regardless, who could even get two cards in this day and age?

Exactly. The people responsible for SLI, have moved on to greener pastures so support is steadily dwindling given that for gaming, you no longer have to worry about buying two lower tiered cards to be able to match a more expensive higher tiered card.

Unless you're doing things like modelling, editing, even fluid simulation - you're better off with a pair of 3090's or just get the more specialized Quadro cards meant for such tasks

Because SLI is made for people that dont get enough power from the most powerful existing card, which is the 3090.

Also a 3090 SLI is 700W by itself, a full powerful custom watercooling would be mandatory to make the SLI run properly. You're looking at a 10k$ rig. That's the price of 8K :D

So you really plan to get $2400 in graphics cards and think you will get lucky enough to find two? I think the price for SLI and the GPU shortage it’s kind of a moot point as why SLI isn’t supported. Maybe a dozen people will be upset.

It wasn't supported anymore for the most part anyway. Those use cases where it's genuinely warranted for work, people are buying 3090's or Quadros. Otherwise it would be simply for benchmarking purposes, which is stupid.

Even SLI is only supported on a small number of games, I think development is tending towards a multi-GPU approach rather than traditional SLI

According to my friends that do 3d modeling... no SLI has little benefit for that workflow. The way OPENCL works with the software they use, the work is tasked out the cards and there is no need for each card to communicate back and forth about what bit of work they are doing. That being said, NVLINK on Quadro cards can be of benefit for some 3d modeling as it pools the memory space together, giving you double the memory for a model rather than each card having to store the complete model in their own individual memory footprint but that's a "feature" that Nvidia put in place for the RTX Quadro cards. It doesn't function on the geforce cards.

I know in my RAW photo editor (Capture One), its actually recommended that you disable SLI for OPENCL workflows. In my own testing running with SLI enabled on the 20 series cards slowed down image processing by about 10% and offered no gain to offset the performance loss.  It was just straight loss.  Since each card gets tasked with a single image at a time and when it finishes is assigned the next image in the queue. Again, there is no need for one card to communicate with another card about its work.

Its a waste of development time to support something that has next to no support.

Checkout modern Motherboards. Most of them have only one PCIe 4.0 x16 Port for GPUs.

I did extensive SLI testing back when I had 2 1080 Ti cards in SLI and in almost all instances, there was ZERO performance gains. 95% of the time, the game didn't support it so card 2 just sat at idle looking good in the case. Games that did support it, both GPUs usually ran at 55 to 65% usage which didn't provide much more FPS than a single card. SLI is dead atm
