Is there anything officially confirmed about a hybrid kit to retrofit on a 3080? I know they've been done in the past, but I thought I had seen it was still being discussed for the 3080.

TBD on a standalone kit. The Card Kit combo, ie 30xx Hybrid is late Oct/Nov.

Are hybrid cards usually manufactured in sufficient quantities or are they especially difficult to find and buy?  It seems like this year is especially bad, so if usual years are bad...this year might be scary.

They definitely aren't made at the same rates as the other cards, but after a few months I'm sure it will be pretty easy to get one.

Historically, the volume has been good enough for the demand, but 2020 is the year of permanent black friday that makes the crypto mining boom look like a slow day. It might be a crapshoot.

Sounds like 8nm yields could be causing some supply chain issues, not to mention covid is sure to cause temporary shortages here and there..

Typically they make aftermarket kits for reference design cards. I'm assuming they are still working on their designs.

I'll be trying out a Kraken G12 bracket with a Kraken X61 AIO hopefully sometime tomorrow when my 3090 FTW3 Ultra comes in (after making sure everything runs alright on air). I've been using a G10 with an X41 and X61 on quite a few different cards, and I'm fairly confident that I'll be able to get it to work.

The bonus to DiY AiO watercooling is that you don't have to wait around for a manufacturer to come out with a kit. And as long as you don't physically damage anything or lose bits of the cooler, the EVGA warranty isn't voided.

Might want to pay special attention to the vram cooling method on the stock card, the vram consumes a ton of power.

Of course, the G12 cools vram with a stiff breeze.........

I fretted over VRM cooling, tried the stick on heatsinks (which fell off), and gave up back when I saw how cool the VRMs on my old 1080 Ti were - with just that little fan blowing on them and my two (200mm?) case side fans pulling in cool air. It was something like 72C looping a stress test (IIRC Timespy Extreme) using a laser thermometer to check. I may end up keeping the front and back plates on though, if I can manage it with some modding to the retention bracket and screws.

Right, but from the GPU-Z readouts we've been seeing so far, these vram are consuming much more power than Turing. I'd be sure to keep an eye on it.  Asus went so far as to give them their own heatsink.

Re: 3080 Hybrid Conversion Kit 2020/09/27 20:56:50 (permalink)
I did the kraken bracket on my 2080ti and temps were great on the memory when I used a temp probe.

On my 2080ti I switched out the fan with a arctic 80mm fan(much quieter) and added an additional one to the left side via ziptie to cool all the ram and components.

You could probably loop some zip ties around the card and have another 80mm fan on the back where the extra memory lies. Definitely should keep an eye on temps like kevin said.  I'm temped to do the same to a ftw card if I can get one before the next apocalypse but idk. My inner self is telling me I should just wait for the hybrid and not bother modding since I no longer have the bracket, nor aio.  That's like 100 bucks worth of stuff. How much more you think the hybrid will be over the ftw? 150?

How accurate are the "in card" icx3 temp probe readings. I noticed the reference cards say "icx3 cooling" but the ftw say "icx3 technology" so I'm guessing the base cards do not have the temp probes, only the ftw and up have them. I got fooled by this unclear marketing when I bought my 2080ti. I thought all the cards had the temp probes. Derp!
