I recently got my hands on an evga ftw 3 ultra gaming 3080 and with it I purchased an evga 850 GQ power supply. I understand the 3080 needs three separate 8 pin power connectors, but my power supply only came with split 2x8pin cables. Do I need 3 single 8pin cables or will 3 split cables be fine?

You can use those cables just fine, just plug in the one connecter and tuck the “pig tail” underneath to hide it.

Ideally, you want three single cables (from what I've read) but I'm running mine with two cables (one with two split connectors, one with only one connector attached) and haven't seen an issue.

You can plug in one connection from one of them and use both of the other connections from the 2nd cable.

It will work, but it's not the ideal situation.

Awesome, this is the info I was looking for. I love buying a 160$ PSU from the same company as the card and not getting the recommended cables for my GPU.

What's wrong with the cables which came with your PSU?  They are fine.  Use them.

Your PSU has four GPU connection points.  Your PSU came with four cables.  Use three cables and leave each's daisy-chained + 8 disconnected and dangling.

    Good to go.

I'm reading everywhere that single cables are recommended and that daisy chained cables are bad for the 30 series as they deliver too much or too little power. I'd rather return this PSU for one with single cables from a reputable brand and not have to worry about anything.

You are misunderstanding what you are reading.  There is nothing wrong with cables with daisy-chained connectors.  Just don't use those daisy-chained connectors if you can avoid it.  Having extra unused connectors dangling won't hurt anything.  A connector which isn't plugged into anything can't "deliver too much or too little power".

So what I'm understanding is that the problem isn't power it's that a split cable gets too hot delivering power to the gpu and can be a fire hazard. So if I run 3 separate split cables this problem goes away. Out of pure ignorance on the subject I'm still concerned whether the power that would be going to the unplugged connector would be reverted to the 1 connector plugged in.

That means using one connection per cable.

You have 4X cables, use 3 of them and use one connection per cable.

    THAT is what is ideal.

Thats not what people say. Even if you get modular sleeved cables by corsair they come with pigtail cable. You can ignore the pigtail (tie wrap it carefully with the main cable and make sure no connector touches anything) OR (which I would NOT recommend) you can use 1 6+2 and its pigtail to plug 1 and 3 pcie slots of your GPU and on slot 2 you add a separate 6+2 and leave its pig tail hanging or tie wrap it.

    HOWEVER:

The best thing to do is put 3 SEPARATE pcie cables leaving their pigtails carefully hidden or hanging (as long as their connections don't touch something) and you will be perfectly fine. The electricity delivered will be EXACTLY the same as a pcie cable without the pigtail. ON CONTRARY, the pigtail cable MAY deliver a bit less electricity and thats why we don't prefer it for main connection.

Hope this helps and clarifies the issue.

Yeah, I installed the PSU and connected 3 separate pigtail cables to the gpu and everything seems to be working fine. Doubled my previous heaven benchmark score with a 2070. Thank you everyone for your time and help.
