Hi guys,

I'm new to GPU issues so bear with me:

I've got a 3060 TI and mostly play older/non GPU intensive games, but in the past month or so I've had a few odd crashes of various games (battletech, No Man's Sky, etc) - I didn't think much of it at first other than finding odd that sound and such would continue but graphics would freeze. Originally chalked it up to the games.

This past weekend I bought Farcry 5 and have crashed out of the game every time I played it. I might get 30 or an hour, but it crashes every time. I downloaded GPU-Z to monitor after discovering the LiverKernelEvent 141 in the crash logs and "Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered." in the Event viewer which led me to believe I might have a GPU problem.

Watching GPU-Z, I'm not sure I know enough to know what is going on - so I'm here for help =)

This is what I'm seeing -  you can see the crash in the chart. (Edit - apparently the link function doesn't work? Screenshot is here ibb.co/n0PfmV3 )

Are 77.3C temp and 88.9 hotspot ok? They don't seem overly concerning. Is it a problem with power consumption being over 100%? Is there anything obvious in the image that I don't see because I'm new to this? Appreciate any help or guidance on next steps.

Could still be memory related. Or Power draw related. What PSU and what memory? We need your whole setup info. Overclocked? Bios settings? etc etc.

    Hi Montana,

Not overclocked. What bio settings are you looking for? I did mess with them once when I tried to install a new SSD (which i never figured out how to enable), but otherwise I think they should be stock. I could reset them to default if you think that is worth a shot.

    Motherboard: Z170 Pro Gaming
PSU: EVGA 750W Supernova 750 G1 Gold Power Supply
Processor: OEM INTEL CORE I7-6700K 4.0GHZ 8MB INTEL SMART CACHE
    RAM: 32 gig, 1400Mhz DRAM
    • 2x ADATA 8 Gig DDR4-2800
    • 2x Corsair 8 Gig DDR4-3200 (added myself - separate from base PC)
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Ti
    Storage:
    • 1 TB HDD 3.5 SATAIII 7200RPM
    • 128GB SANDISK Z400S SSD 2.5" SATAIII 6.0 GB/s
    • (and 1 Intel SSD that I purchased separate from the PC and I've never figured out how to get working)
Let me know if I'm missing anything and thanks for the help.

one problem sticks out: You have mixed memory speeds, I believe your memory conflict is the cause

Interesting. I've had it that way for a while (at least a year) but this issue is relatively new - maybe 2-3 months. I can buy a few more 3200s to try to resolve, but I'd be mystified as to why the issue wouldn't have presented itself until fairly recently and why I'd just recent started getting the errors I mentioned above. If I ran CPU-Z while playing to monitor would there be any indication if this was the cause (trying to learn what to look for)?

That said, good to know that mixed speeds is bad. I wasn't aware of that.

from what I've read, having mixed speeds results in the system utilizing one of the speeds, not both. Im sure you would be better off having all memory sticks the same speed and enabling XMP in the memory.
GPU Z is only for the graphics card. Run task manager and check the memory in the performance tab.
Also, use the same brand for your memory sticks

Bought 2 more of the same sticks I already have (Corsair) - they arrive today. Will test and update results tonight.

Yeah. You also have to keep in mind that as windows updates, things that were non-issues before can suddenly become issues. So memory could be it, least that’s the first thing to explore.

My 3080 also goes a little over 100% for power consumption at stock in HWInfo. I’m guessing that’s normal behavior.

No luck - I installed the new RAM (identical to my other 2 corsair sticks) and still crashed. I also reseated everything in the PC and went bonkers dusting it all (it was pretty clean already).

One thing I noticed today - when the crash occurred my second monitor disconnected and reconnected (the little sound when you plug in a new device). Does that further support a GPU issue?

    Any other good next steps?

try running some OCCT test to make sure stable, unplug second monitor see if still crash

have you tried to use ddu in safe mode to uninstall the old drivers fully and install the latest driver or say an older driver like 461.92. if you go the old driver route install it driver only without g force stuff so it doesn't try and auto update

ubisoft forum post suggested selecting custom during the nvidia driver install and it should give you an option to do a clean install, give that a try.

Have you tried underclocking the card to max negative values on the both the core and memory using msi afterburner? If not, give that a shot to see if it helps stop the crashing.

Just tried this. Fresh drivers others removed using DDU. No luck just crashed again

I guess i could try this next - would that indicate a defective card? I mean I shouldnt have to run a card at worse specs than it's default, right?

Played for a few hours today - no crashes after underclocking using MSI afterburner.

Will play some more tomorrow night and confirm.

after playing with underclocked card, did you reset back to factory clock and re-test?

    Nope. Can do that tonight.

I *just* had a crash, but that was after 3 play sessions and ~10 hours of play (at least 2 hours this session). Before I was crashing every ~30m, so underclocking made a huge effect. Can put it back to default and retest in a bit.

I suspect you have a bad video card that needs to be returned to whoever you bought it from

Did you buy it new or used?

If it was used, it might have been mined on (heavily and not properly cooled) and now there is high voltage leak. How do people **** up their cards in like 3 months?

Bought new. Ya - just put it back to factory clock setting and crashed again. Looks like the card. Bought from Best Buy - back when the 3060s came out. Will have to check warranty.

Until then crank up the voltage and see if it becomes more stable. You probably want to increase the voltage by like 50 mV. Underclocking does the same thing for stability but that loses you performance. Overvolting just create more heat and uses more power.

Have you checked for VBIOS updates? I remember with the 3080 released, they also crashed often at high power usage, often due to the boost speeds being 1-2 bins too high for the stock voltage.

You will definitely need to RMA with evga. Best Buy probably won't do returns or will just tell you to do an RMA anyway.
