Hi all,

I recently received my 2080 XC black edition, and have been testing it out. The temperatures and fan noise I've been getting with it are worse than what I was expecting (mostly compared to the several GPUs from older generations I've owned).

I did some temperature testing on the card by opening the case and measuring the temperatures using Precision X1. The room temperature was about 72F. For idle temps, the card would land at 55C with fans at 425RPM (12%). It's worth noting my main monitor runs at 144Hz which seems to always keep a small load on the GPU. These "idle" temperatures are a little higher than what I've seen with my previous cards.

Next, I ran Kingdom Come: Deliverance to test a game load. I found the temperature would climb up to 78C within 20 minutes with fans at 2200RPM (~65%) which was very audible. The card was running around 1860MHz on the core clock and hitting power limit with the default 100% power target. So, I would have to raise the power target (and temperatures) to have the card run the Default speeds without hitting power limit. These temperatures and fan speeds (even without raising the power target) are significantly worse than I've experienced with other GPUs at Default settings that I've owned.

While none of these results are alarming, I decided to pop off the GPU cooler to check if anything obvious was causing these rather high temps. I found that the thermal paste on the GPU in the card seemed to have a rather large area (0.5 - 1 inch diameter) where there was little-to-no thermal paste. So, I cleaned off the paste and re-applied with some Arctic Silver 5. After testing again, the temperatures were only about 1-2C lower than before. I popped off the cooler again to check the paste and found that there was still the same area where little-to-no thermal paste remained. Here is a pic of this:

In my experience, this means that either the GPU or cooler surface is not even which could mean poor contact between the two and worse temperatures. But I am not sure if this really is the issue. Are the temperatures I'm experiencing expected for this card?

In general the RTX Cards run 10°C-15°C higher than the GTX Cards air or water.
So do not go by what you have seen on your older GTX Card.
If I was to replace the Thermal Past it would be TF8
I was a big user of MX-4 but TF8 has changed my mind.
I stopped using Arctic Silver 5 year ago.

I have the same card and it runs a little hot, but I think that is the theme with all of them.

If I don't OC, I get about 68-70 on load. With OC I hit 80 easy, my issue is the fan curve I adjust never seems to actually work. If I set fans to run at 70% once it hits 60 and 80% at 70, it just stays at 65% fan speed from 70 to 80.

Fan noise isn't a big issue for me as I got Fractal R6 with sound dampening.

78c isn't a problem.

Just wondering what is the OC frequency you guys get on xc black? Mine could only be stable at 2010 mhz at 74 degrees C.

@HHHHHardy I was able to push my 2080 xc black core to about 2080MHz (what a coincidence) and get consistent driver crash past that. However, the card ends up running 81-82C with 70% fan speed at that point (also had to raise the power limit to about 115%). Realistically, my card can only stay around 2000-2025MHz under load due to temperatures and GPU boost.

With abundant fresh air I run 69C at +190 core which settles at 2024 in Time Spy. 85% GPU fan speed.
