Re:1st ever (as far as I know) liquid cooled ps3 in a computer case 2011/07/17 07:45:02 (permalink)
So I was playing L.A. Noire last night and I failed to notice that the temp had risen 3c more than usual. Right as I was about to charge Ryan on The Gas Man case, I got the, "Your Playstation 3 has become hot. yada yada yada"...and shut itself down. I noticed the case fans were spiking and lowering their speeds. The pump had stopped working. Then everything shut off...I actually think that the PS3 shut off because one of the memory chips may have gotten too hot. I turned on the ps3, after cooling down, just long enough to eject my game....I seem to remember losing one of the memory chip's heatsink pads during the modding.

After looking things over for a minute, I disconnected the power from the blown pump, and that allowed the atx psu to power back on and run the fans.

I'm never buying a pump/res combo again because you can't work on fixing the pump.

So I'm switching things up and bought the following:
1) Alphacool Cape Bullseye Reservoir:
http://www.aquatuning.us/product_info.php/info/p1142_Alphacool-Cape-Corp-Bullseye-Black-Pro--POM-.html2
2) Alphacool 120mm case fan adapter for the reservoir so it can use a slot
3) Alphacool G1/4 Temp Sensor
4) Alphacool's new VPP655 Pump (1. It's got power, and 2. it's easily mountable)
http://www.aquatuning.us/product_info.php/info/p11277_Alphacool-VPP655----G1-4-IG-complete-with-D5-HF-Top.html

I'll have pictures at the end of the week (most likely).

Here's the final rendition...I'm waiting on some extra coolant to come in, so pay no attention to the air pocket in my loop. I was about 50-80mL short.
1) Modified motherboard heatshield for heatsinks:

2) Enzotech copper heatsinks on the northbridge, EEGS processor, and the memory modules:

3) Cut 80mm hole on left side of case to mount the Alphacool Bullseye Reservoir:

4) Installed Alphacool VPP655 Pump and slapped it all back together:

UPDATE: LED came today....

Got the extra coolant I needed in the mail today. After bleeding the bubbles from the loop for about an hour, I got everything squared away.

I played L.A. Noire for an hour and the temp stayed steady at 31.6c (89f) with a spike at 31.9c. The ambient temp in the room was 76f. I have effectively held the operating temp at just 13f above room temp.

This is a full 2c reduction from the previous setup I had.

Is your PlayStation still operating? What are the highest temps and lowest temps? How much did it cost you all in total? Where did you order the waterblocks and heatsinks from? What connecter does the temp. display use for power? How long has it been running for? Thank you. I am thinking on water cooling by first gen. PlayStation 3 60GB. Have had the YLOD twice and sent it to sony twice. I only want to know how much the waterblocks, pump/water holder, and radiator cost? And the temp. monitor. Don't want to know how much the fans cost. Please replay ASAP. If you can give tips on the problems you faced that would be much helpful.

This is very inventful and cool but just curious, why? Was this just for [censored] and giggles or do you use your PS3 quite often?

This is my response from my DIY thread when asked the question "why?" (which is a perfectly valid question for something like this:
My ps3 YLOD'd 2 times in the past 5 months. If the liquid cooling was not done, I guarantee my ps3 would have YLOD again. Liquid cooling wouldn't be necessary for a system that has not YLOD (it would be a preventative measure). You could do the swap to the cpu case and call it a day, and hope that your system never falls victim to the YLOD......BUT, if your system has YLOD multiple times. It IS, in my opinion, necessary. Think about it, if all you did was swap it into the cpu case, all you've done is open up a little breathing room, because the only fan able to fit underneath the mobo is the ps3 fan (no change there). All other fans would be blowing top down on the mobo...not the cpu and gpu.

I don't know which ps3 model you have (or if you even have one), but the original launch model ps3's get insanely hot....as a test, try to touch the motherboard plates after gaming for an hour. You'll burn your fingers. Mine on the other hand, are cool to the touch.

P.S. Keep in mind that this is not a cheap endeavor. It would be more simple and cost-effective to purchase another ps3. I only did this because my ps3 YLOD'd 2 times in 5 months. I did not want to lose my backwards compatability. I don't like the Slims. And this project cost about $100 more than a new ps3.......AND, I like a challenge.

Yes, my PS3 is still running (coming up on 1 year in February). The temps change with the ambient temps associated with the changing of seasons. I will say that during the winter, it never rises above 25.8c. During the summer, I never saw the temp go above 36c. It's usually about a 7c difference between the ambient temp and the system temp.

Here's a link to the DIY that lists the parts and the price/website where I got the parts:

I don't think that size will work. If I remember correctly, the motherboard is larger than the Apevia's 12x7 dimensions.
